A local doctor has been named as one of Britain’s most influential black people along with of Formula 1 racing driver Lewis Hamilton and Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand.

Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust's Medical Director, Dr Ify Okocha - never reportedly seen without sporting his signature bow-tie - is included as a new entrant in the Sciences, Medicine and Engineering section of the 2012 Powerlist sponsored by investment bank J.P. Morgan.

Other names in the list include: supermodel Naomi Campbell; TV presenter Zeinab Badawi and actor/producer Idris Elba, star of Luther and The Wire.

Ify’s African background has helped him in his work, due to his understanding of West African culture. A large part of south London that Oxleas serves - Greenwich, Bexley and Bromley - has an ethnic population of nearly 30 per cent in some areas.

Ify has a direct responsibility for hundreds of medical staff employed by the trust including: doctors; psychologists, psychiatrists and consultants.

Ify was described in the glossy brochure produced for the London award ceremony earlier this month as: “a consultant psychiatrist with more than 20 years experience in the assessment, diagnosis and management of all mental disorders including personality disorders, dual diagnosis and victims of trauma.

“His particular areas of expertise include psychopathology (recognition of symptoms and signs of mental illness), management of people who have experienced severe trauma, recognising the impact of stress and significant life events on people’s ability to live from day to day and recommending appropriate treatment which can include medication and or psychosocial interventions.”
