Edo State Governor Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has presented a 2012 appropriation bill of N148.87 billion, aimed at enhancing quality governance.

Governor Oshiomhole who took time to account for the 2011 budget said his administration has recorded tremendous gains having successfully implemented over 80% of the capital expenditure for the 2011 budget.

He reported that his administration has so far constructed 550 Kilometers of road across 400 communities, reconstructed 76 primary and secondary schools, 61 others are under construction while contracts has been awarded for the reconstruction of another 52 schools.

The Governor highlighted his administrations achievement in the areas of flood and erosion control, health, water, sports, rural electrification among others.

He said the 2012 budget seeks to accelerate completion of ongoing infrastructural projects, as well as extend projects to other communities and critical areas of deficits, maintenance, employment and wealth creation.

The 2012 budget as proposed is N14.98 billion excess of the 2011 budget. Out of the total, N84.9 billion is proposed as capital expenditure, while N63.97 billion is earmarked as recurrent expenditure.

Some residents commended the performance of the 2011 budget and described the 2012 budget proposal as holding great prospects for Edo state.

The Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for Edo State was N1 billion in excess of the projected 10.68 Billion for 2011 and the state government said it is resolved for even more aggressive IGR drive boost its capacity to fund its operations through the IGR.

The budget is really not that large, only about $1 billion usd. I really cant think of what a STATE can do with such a little budget with about 50% [$500,000] going to recurrent expenditures. And the sad part is that this is considered a high budget in Nigeria, while Local governments in other countries have a higher Budgets than states in Nigeria [link]. The Administrative system in Nigeria is truly messed up and needs to change. Like I said and will continue to say we don't need 36 states doing the job 10 states can do and we don't need 774 LGA doing the job 200 can do. Choking up budgets with pointless recurrent expenditures.

I know that Governorship Elections for Edo State will take place next year, so I was sort of wary about the Governor proposing a budget larger than any before, but for God sake, just $1 billion?!!

I don't even thin there'll be any provision made for the proposal I'm preparing for the state government at all. Ah!

Re: Edo State Proposes N148.87bn Budget For 2012 by OmoTier1(m): 4:28pm On Dec 03, 2011
I think what is so important about budget is not so much about the final sums but rather how the government planned to generate the income to meet up with what is budgeted.

Looking at the budget itself, I think it reflects where Edo State is heading! The state needs massive infrastructral upgrading. Glad to see the flood issue being given a priority it truly deserves. This is how you know a government: Sees the looming troubles, stands firms, articulate and respond with vibrancy, profering solutions to the looming danger. However this is unlike what we know of the FG!

Kudos to Edo State government and the team working with Oshimohole. Thank God that state got rid of PDP for good! 2012 is ACN blues Edo will be singing!

Ugbowo Lagos Rd is a federal road. Blame the FG for frustrating that project. If you have been to Edo State recently, you will see clearly that Oshiomhole is the best thing to have happened to that state since Ogbemudia.
