Governor Akpabio presents N397.141b budget

Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio yesterday presented a N397.141billion budget to lawmakers for the 2012 financial year.

According to Akpabio, the  budget is a decrease of N22.644billion against the total revised appropriation of N419.785billion for the 2011 fiscal year.

In the budget outlay, N66.244 billion is for recurrent expenditure.  About N330.897 billion is for capital expenditure, representing a recurrent capital ratio of 1:5.

The governor puts the total projected revenue at N263.777 billion, representing a decrease of N12.817billion as against the 2011 corresponding revised estimate of N276.595 billion.

The “Budget for Industrialisation”, Akpabio said, will derive its revenue from derivation N200. 132billion, Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) N21.646billion, Statutory Allocation N36billion and Value Added Tax (VAT) N6billion.

Akpabio praised the House for the cooperation given to him, saying such has led to the uncommon transformation the state is experiencing.

According to him, the policy thrust of the budget is based on consolidating the gains of 2011 and completing all projects.

Speaker Samuel Ikon assured the governor of the House’s support.

shocked

There will be a time when Akwa Ibom State is the most developed in all of Nigeria, if those who govern after Akpabio follow in his footsteps.

Oh boy, see money shocked!!! Making it 'rain' big time. And it would have been much more if not for the oil wells ceded to Rivers State.

What Akwa Ibom has going for it is its relatively small size and population in relation to its receipts, and its relative peace necessary for economic activities to thrive. On the flip side, it still has much to do completing on-going projects and starting new ones waiting in the wings.

I'm really hoping the state does well in the next few years. It will spur on the neighbouring state governments to do better, as shame wouldn't let them slack seeing what their peer is doing across the border.

Akwa Ibom should have the wealthiest citizen in Nigeria. Honestly, i think there should be some world class development going on in the state(All corners). The state lies on the coast of Nigeria and the population is relatively manageable with so much oil money!

Bayelsa also has plenty of oil money and a tiny population.

Having oil money is not enough. You also have to have good leadership.

Some will use oil money as an excuse to do 80% recurrent. Instead Akpabio is doing 20%. . .

He isn't embarking on cheap useless populist ventures like free this, free that, free amala, etc, etc. Instead he is investing in the future of his people.

(for any pedants, I realize that he is actually doing less than 20%.)

You wan talk about Bayelsa? Abeg that state na basket case (in more ways than one). Bayelsa together with Delta governments, are dark stains in the on-going story of the south-south. All things considered, i even rate little Ebonyi above Bayelsa, and that's saying something shocked.

There's something to be said about a leaders feelings of optimism, pride and can-do spirit rubbing off on the people he's leading, as can be seen in the case of Akwa-Ibom. You don't see the same effect in the case of Bayelsa: the indigenes (taking a cue from their leader) look defeated, angry, clueless and just seem to be waiting for where the next hand-out will come from. There are hardly any worthwhile stories to be told in that state with regards to education, healthcare, road construction, tourism, etc. One positive though is that militancy seems to have been curtailed, but who takes the credit for that?

More than a decade after it was created, Yenagoa still looks like a glorified local government headquater. And the indigenes sit there, maybe waiting for God to come down from heaven and effect the necessary change in government. Expect some mugus that have been settled with some bags of rice and bottles of ogogoro to troop out en masse on election day, chanting "Sylva na our man!!!".

Akpabio has done well in what area , why do we fall so easily to all this. The only way Akpabio can still big money is to divert all the money to capital project and then inflate the price of project by 500%. The people of Akwa Ibom still live in pure poverty and I have discussed this before in one of the topic. Salary still not paid since October becos of not agreeing to minimum wage

Akwa Ibom has taken giant strides. The problem with Nigerians we have this pull them down syndrome. If the project is not in my village or managed by my brother then it is not good. when you see good changes acknowledge it and move on. I live in Lagos and work in Akwa Ibom, I can tell you the difference is clear.
