How many hosts can a network server with an IP address of 154.37.185.9 support?

65534 with that ip address inclusive using default subnet mask for class B ip addresses. Unless the network is subnetted then i'll need the slash notation or the subnet mask used for the subnetting.

I have posted the solution to cisco thread but let me paste it here for you,

The first question to ask your self when solving this question is what class of ip address it fall in, (154.37.185.9)

You can use the first octet to identify it, for example:

class A = 1-126

class B = 128-191

class C = 192-223

127 is omitted cos its your loop back address use for testing,

now with these, where do you think the ip address fall in ? check the first octet of the ip address, (154.37.185.9) once you are able to figure it out then you will get your answer with the calculations below,


To get the number of valid host on a class C network do 2 power 8 = 256-2 = 254

To get the number of valid host on a class B network do 2 power 16 = 65536 - 2 = 65534

To get the number of valid host on class A network do 2 power 24 = 16777216 - 2 =16777214
