EQUATORIAL GUINEA

History: Equatorial Guinea is making it’s debut in this competition.

How They Qualified For AFCON 2012: Equatorial Guinea gained automatic qualification on July 29, 2007 when they won the bid to co-host the 28th edition of the continental competition along with Gabon. It is the maiden appearance for the Nzalang Nacional, and the team have been playing friendly matches in order to prepare for the challenge ahead.

Coach: The Nzalang Nacional are coached by Brazilian, Gilson Paulo. Paulo came in at short notice after former coach Henri Michel quit a month before the finals.

Squad
Goalkeepers: Danilo Emanuel (America, Brazil), Felipe Ovono (Sony de Ela Nguema), Achil Pensi Muokembe (The Panthers)
Defenders: Lawrence Sokota Doe (Al Shabab, Oman), Jose Bokung (Deportivo de Mongomo), Rui Fernando da Gracia Gomes (Logrones, Spain), David Álvarez (Langreo, Spain), Armando Sipoto Buale (Badajoz, Spain), Raúl Ivan Fabiani Bosio (C. D. Alcoyano, Spain)
Midfielders: Ben Esono Konate (The Panthers), Daniel Vazquez Evuy (Villaviciosa, Spain), Rolan de la Cruz Biyogo (Fortaleza, Colombia), Juvenal Edjogo Owono (Sabadell, Spain), Narcisse Ekanga Amia (TP Mazembe, DR Congo), Raúl Juan Máximo Eyama (Deportivo de Mongomo), Jose Javier Balboa Osa (SC Beira-Mar, Portugal), Fousseiny Kamissoko (Al Shabab, Oman)
Forwards: Ellong Douwala Viera (Sony de Ela Nguema), Rodolfo Bodipo (Deportivo de A Coruna, Spain), Ivan Bolado Palacios (Cartagena, Spain), Iban ‘Randy’ Iyanga (Union Deportiva Las Palmas, Spain), Thierry Fidjeu Tazemeta (Konyaspor, Turkey), Daniel-Bladimir Ekedo (San Roque de Lepe, Spain)

Captain: The team will be led out by Javier Angel Balboa Osa. The Spanish-born Equatoguinean right winger is one of the high hopes for the AFCON co-hosts. He has played for Real Madrid, Benfica and is now with Beira-Mar. The 26-year-old has won both the Spanish and Portuguese leagues with Madrid and Benfica respectively, providing the national side with great experience.

Star Player: 29-year-old Thierry Fidjeu Tazemeta is undoubtedly the star of this team. He has netted a total of five goals throughout their friendlies this year. He has been instrumental in almost all their major games, but still remains a free agent. The striker will have to go the extra mile in order to push his lowly-rated side onward in their debut appearance.

Young Talent: Juanito Ndong is one of the rising stars of the Nzalang Nacional. The 19 year old will be one of the young faces with the potential to dazzle the continent in 2012 in front of his home crowd, and could catch the eye of a few scouts with his performances.
Probable Starting XI:  Henri Michel has experimented with a variety of formations in previous games, but seems likely to stick to the usual 4-4-2 when the tournament comes around in January.

LIBYA

History: Libya appeared previously in this competition in 1982 and 2006 with it’s best performance being a Runners-up position in 1982

How They Qualified For AFCON 2012: Libya qualified as Group C’s best runner up. Libya’s qualification for their third AFCON tournament ever is arguably the top African football story in 2011. The Mediterranean Knights had to overcome a civil war that threatened to rip apart both the country and the team, finishing as one of the best second-placed sides from Group C, against all expectations

Coach: The team is being handled by Marcos Paqueta. The Brazilian coach has managed teams everywhere from his home country to the United Arab Emirates, but is perhaps best remembered for his time at the helm of Saudi Arabia during the 2006 World Cup. He took over the Libyans in July of last year and has completely rebuilt the side since his arrival.

Squad
Goalkeepers: Samir Abboud ((Al Ittihad)); Jum’aa Q’tait; Muhammad Neshnoush ((Al Ittihad)
Defenders: Muhammad al Maghrabi (Olympique Khourigba, Morocco); Muhammad Mounir (FK Jagodina, Serbia); Ali Salaama (Olympique Beja, Tunisia); Younes al-Shibaani (Olympique Khourigba, Morocco); Osama Chtiba (Nejmeh SC, Lebanon); Ahmed al-Alwaani (Al Madina); Rabee’a al-Laafi (Club Africain, Tunisia); Abdulaziz Belreesh (Club Africain, Tunisia).
Midfielders: Djamal Abdallah (SC Braga, Portugal); (US Monastir, Tunisia); Marwan Al Mabrouk (Al Ittihad); (Al Nasser); Moataz Ben Amer (Al Ahli Benghazi); Waleed al-Khatroushi; (Al Ittihad); Abdallah Al Cherif (Al Madina); Oussama Abdelsalam (Al Akhdhar), Faicel Al Badri (Al Hilal)
Forwards: Ahmed Sa’ad (Club Africain, Tunisia); Ahmed Zuway (CA Bizertin, Tunisia); Ihaab al Bouseffi (Al Ittihad)

Captain: The squad is captained by Samir Aboud. The 39-year-old goalkeeper is an inspirational leader who played through injury and made two crucial saves in Libya’s final qualifier in Chingola against Zambia. The Chipolopolo couldn’t get past him on the day as the north Africans held them to a 0-0 draw which proved just enough for them to qualify

Star Player: Not only is he one of Libya’s top strikers, but Tariq Abdul Fattah also fought with the Libyan revolutionaries to liberate his country of Muammar Gaddafi's mercenaries. The talented forward should have no problem coping with the nerves of partaking in his first AFCON after surviving such an experience.

Young Talent: Club Africain right-back, Rabie El Lafi has the distinction of scoring the first goal for Libya after the fall of Gaddafi’s regime. His 28th-minute winner from an acute angle against Mozambique in Cairo allowed his team to begin a new era of Libyan football with the full three points.

Probable Starting XI:  Paqueta has constructed an inexperienced but hard-working team from scratch. Libyan footballers are known for their on-the-ball skills but have often lacked the tactical discipline and physical readiness needed to win tight games. This has changed under the Brazilian who has needed to do little in terms of inspiring his players given that all of them are bursting with national pride at the moment.

History: The Teranga Lions have appeared previously in 1965, 1968, 1986, 1990, 1992, 1994, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 with their best performance being a runners-up position in 2002.

How They Qualified For AFCON 2012:  Senegal qualified as Group E winners. The Teranga Lions started their qualifying campaign with a 4-2 away win over DR Congo before handing Mauritius a 7-0 drubbing and edging rivals Cameroon 1-0 in Dakar. A goalless draw against Cameroon in Yaounde and two straight wins over DR Congo and Mauritius finished their unbeaten campaign with 16 points.

Coach: Gaffer of the side is Amara Traore. The 46-year-old came on board in 2009 when the brilliant 2002 World Cup generation was dwindling away. Initially deemed awkward and inexperienced, Traore set up a new team composed mainly of young professionals, whose cohesion has yielded results and praise for the local manager.

Squad
Goalkeepers: Khadim Ndiaye (ASC Linguere), Bouna Coundoul (New York Red Bulls, USA), Pape Latyr Ndiaye (Ouakam)
Defenders: Kader Mangane (Rennes, France), Souleymane Diawara (Marseille, France), Lamine Sané (Bordeaux, France), Jacques Faty (Sivasspor, Turkey), Moustapha Bayal Sall (St Etienne, France), Pape Malickou Diakhaté (Granada, Spain), Cheikh Mbengue (Toulouse, France), Armand Traoré (QPR, England), Omar Daf (Brest, France)
Midfielders: Rémi Gomis (Valenciennes, France) , Mouhamed Diamé ( Wigan, England), Guirane N'Daw (Birmingham City, England), Ndiaye Dème Ndiaye (Arles-Avignon, France)
Forward: Issiar Dia ( Fenerbahce, Turkey), Moussa Sow (Lille, France), Papiss Demba Cissé (Freiburg, Germany), Souleymane Camara (Montpelier, France), Mamadou Niang (Al Sadd, Qatar), Demba Ba (Newcastle United, England), Dame N'Doye (FC Copenhagen, Denmark).

Captain: The team will be led onto the pitch by Mamadou Niang. The 32-year-old is a striker with immense focus, who easily adapts to the structure of any game. His pace and close control make him a tough challenge for his markers. His accurate finishing has often earned him the top scorer accolade with his clubs and with the national team.

Star Player: Moussa Sow finished top scorer of Ligue 1 with 25 goals last season and is an asset to the Teranga Lions. His intelligence, creativity and composure often open personal goal-scoring chances or timely and defence-splitting assists, which collectively contribute to the progress of his teams.

Young Talent: Olympique Lyonnais Lamine Gassama has shown stunning tackling ability and bravery in his right-back role and those attributes earned him a call-up to the French Under-21 side, before he chose to play for Senegal's senior team earlier this year. The 22-year-old has great potential.

Probable Starting XI: Traore has been faithful to his 4-4-2 formation, which relies heavily on defenders Diawara, Diakhate and Sall to help Diame and Dia drive the midfield forward.

ZAMBIA

History: Previous Appearances were in 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2006, 2008, 2010 with the Best Performance being Runners-up positions in 1974 & 1994.

How They Qualified For AFCON 2012:  Zambia qualified as Group C winners although they left qualification until the final round of matches and played out a goalless draw with Libya which saw them finish on top of the group  with 13 points. Chipolopolo had started their campaign well, thrashing Comoros 4-0 in Lusaka and they also gave Mozambique a 3-0 hiding which they followed up with a 2-0 win in the return fixture.

Coach: Herve Renard has been reappointed as the new Chipolopolo coach, replacing the Italian trainer Dario Bonetti who was recently sacked despite guiding Zambia to a berth in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. The Frenchman was Zambia coach between May 2008 and February 2010 then quit his position for a lucrative deal with the Palancas Negras of Angola.

Squad
Goalkeepers: Joshua Titima (Power Dynamos), Kalililo Kakonje (unattached), Kennedy Mweene (Free State Stars, South Africa).
Defenders: Chintu Kampamba (BIDVest Wits, South Africa), Davies Nkausu (Supersport United, South Africa), Francis Kasonde, Hichani Himoonde, Stopilla Sunzu (all TP Mazembe, Congo DR), Joseph Musonda (Golden Arrows, South Africa), Nyambe Mulenga (Zesco United).
Midfielders: Chisamba Lungu (Ural, Russia), Clifford Mulenga (Bloemfontein Celtic, South Africa), Chris Katongo (Henan Jienye, China), Felix Katongo, Nathan Sinkala (both Green Buffaloes), Isaac Chansa (Orlando Pirates, South Africa), Jonas Sakuwaha (El Merreikh, Sudan), Noah Chivuta (Free State Stars, South Africa), Rainford Kalaba (TP Mazembe, Congo DR).

Forwards: Collins Mbesuma (South Africa), Emmanuel Mayuka (BSC Young Boys, Switzerland), Evans Kangwa (Nkana), James Chamanga (Dalian Shide, China).

Captain: Skipper of the side is Christopher Katongo. The 29-year-old striker is currently playing for Chinese club Henan Construction. He has played in Germany for Arminia Bielefeld as well as the South African PSL side Jomo Cosmos. He is famous for scoring a quick fire hat-trick against South Africa in 2007, which earned him a promotion from a corporal to a sergeant in the Zambian Army.

Star Player: Kennedy Mweene is one of the best goalkeepers in the South African PSL, where he plays for Free State Stars. The 2009-10 Premier Soccer League Goalkeeper of the Year is currently the captain of Stars and has also on several occasions skippered the national team. He is not just a safe pair of hands, but is also able to take penalties for his side

Young Talent:  21-year-old striker, Emmanuel Mayuka was the youngest player at both the 2007 Under-20 World Cup and the Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. After the Afcon tournament he was snapped up by Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv and he now plays for Swiss side Young Boys, who signed him as replacement for Seydou Doumbia. He has an eye for goal and impressive athletic ability.

Probable Starting XI: The Chipolopolo have always been a quick attacking team making use of a big forward, in this case Jacob Mulenga, who holds the ball to bring his supporting partner, Chris Katongo, and midfielders into play. Their signature attacking move is playing the ball wide to Fwayo Tembo and Jonas Sakuwaha to cross for Mulenga who is very strong in the air.
