Audition Tips You Should Know by Raymagnate(m): 2:00am On Jan 29, 2012
Have you ever appeared in and audition venue, startled by the crowed? A queasy feelings
settles in your stomach, you keep wondering how you are going to make it through, then you
are latter exposed to an environment of gossiping men and women who sips water and drinks
of any kind, while complementing each other’s headshots. Suddenly, the casting director calls
your number or name. “What do you have for us today?” they ask you. There you are confused;
you don’t know what to do or what to say, you begin to stammer and sweat keep’s pouring on
your body. The casting director‘s expression tells you everything. You won’t be getting a
callback.
Actually you can easily get rid of this scenario by following these simple tips:

Read the audition piece carefully

In the case of acting, audition piece sometimes are being sent out on mails and other format
before the audition date, ensure you get it immediately it is being sent and carefully study over
and over again. Arrive at the audition venue one hour before audition begins and be fully
prepared, not just to performed, but also to present any requested material. Ensure that what
you have prepared for all day long is burning at the back of your mind, and you just want to go
and get it done perfectly. Please don’t occupy your mind with failure; otherwise you are going
to fail.
Finally, based upon the audition notice, make certain you trying out for an appropriate part. If
the casting director is looking for a tall, bald man in his 60s, don’t show up hoping that they will
change the script for your short, frizzy-haired, thirty-year-old self. Follow whatever guidelines
are offered to ensure that you arrive at the audition organized as possible.

Be professional

Be courteous, but don’t be too talkative. Don’t pester crew members or fellow actors with idle
conversation, because you are distracting yourself. Spend your quality time privately reading
yourself.
Most casting directors expect you to bring a headshot and resume. This might not hold true for
community theatre productions. However, if you are committed to a career to a career in
theater, you may want to bring these along just to make a favorable impression. In general I
would suggest you act as if you are going for a job interview. Avoid inappropriate behavior,
whether its chewing gum, using profane language or behavior, behaving too shyly or brashly, or
making long-winded speeches as to why you are perfect for the role.

Dress Appropriately

This is the best time to wear “business casual” wears. You want to exhibit charm and
professionalism, but you don’t want to appear like a stock broker or a banker. Remember,
many actors make the mistake of wearing costumes to audition. The casting director might just
be amused, but they will definitely not take you seriously.
But you can wear your dance attire if you are auditioning for a dancing part in a musical. It
should not be anything flashy or expensive. Any choreographer will focus on your dance ability
and not your sequins.

Perfect Your Monologue

If you are asked to bring a monologue or to prepare one, make certain that you have rehearsed
it completely. Don’t just know the lines; know the character that you are becoming. Let the
casting director see a striking difference in the character that is now coming to life on the stage.
Some of the casting directors would love you to give to them exactly the way they prepared
their piece, ensure you deliver the same way, but if the other way round be sure that you study
well is such a way that you can deliver on a different perspective. Just be flexible with the
audition materials. If given the chance, show them that you can interpret the role in many
different ways.

Don’t Apologize

It’s of a fact that after auditions, an actor becomes his worst critics. Often times, hopeful
thespians are tempted to explain themselves to the directors. They provide all sort of excuses
and even apologies in hopes of gaining sympathy. Avoid this as much as possible. If a director
has not ask you to wait after your audition, please leave, don’t just hang around. Thank the
casting director and leave the stage knowing that if you are right for the part, they will contact
you.
Some times after they might have gone through all of the stuffs in their cameras, they still go on
and contact more people that did fairly well. If they didn’t call you back, know that you did your
best, you have learnt something and you have overcome the fear of not being able to perform.
Moreover, they are many other wonderful roles out there waiting to be filled.
