FG approves new posting policy for NYSC

ABUJA – FEDERAL Government has approved a new National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members posting policy to make the progra-mme more responsive to the developmental needs of the country.

Director-General of NYSC, Brig.-General Nnamidi Okore-Affia, in a statement in Abuja, said the policy will focus on four key sectors: rural health, education, infrastructure and agriculture.

The NYSC boss said the new posting policy framework will enhance equitable distribution of corps manpower in a way that would curtail under-utilisation and re-energise the objective of the scheme as envisioned by its founding fathers.

He said: “The policy, which takes effect from the 2012 Batch ‘A’ service year, is to ensure more effective and efficient utilisation of the corps manpower.

“It is a deliberate attempt to apply the skill of corps members to areas of critical need and to fast-track the nation’s socio-economic transformation.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of Youth Deve-lopment Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi, yesterday, revealed that the ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of Health in the posting of corps members to make corps members participate actively in the provision of primary healthcare, especially in the rural areas.

Speaking during a visit paid on him by the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu in Abuja, Abdullahi noted that the large youth population in Nigeria has a serious implication on how public health should be managed in the country.

According to him, after 38 years of existence NYSC was deviating from rural development, a part of the original objectives of setting up the scheme.
