Ibom
International Airport
which was inaugurated
September 23, 2009 has
been rated as one of the
most patronized airports
in the country having
recorded 403,663
passengers in two years.
Governor Godswill
Akpabio of Akwa Ibom
State who made the claim
on Tuesday in Uyo while
signing the contract for
the construction of an
international terminal
building for the airport
said, the airport is fast
becoming a destination of
choice for air travelers as
evidenced by the number
of people traveling in and
out of the airport, adding
that the reason for the
impressive performance
of the airport lies in the
fact that it is ‘industry
compliant’.
Giving a breakdown, the
Governor said the number
made their journeys with
7,749 aircrafts being the
total number of both
national and international
flights which conveyed
pilgrims to Jerusalem
from the airport.
His words: “Ibom airport,
the most industry
complaint airport in the
country has become
internationally compliant.
It is the fastest growing
airport in Nigeria today
having had 403,663
passengers using 7,749
flights in and out of the
airport in the last 2 years
of its operation.”
He noted that the success
recorded was possible
with the two interim
terminals; and to
consolidate on the
successes as well as
meeting the requirements
of regulatory agencies, a
state-of-the-art
international
terminal building that will
cost N18.055 billion had
been approved for the
airport.
While charging ALCON
Nigeria, an Italian
company that would
handle the construction of
the new terminal, on
timely delivery of the
project; Akpabio urged
the people of the state to
remain steadfast and
support the government
so that the dreams of the
state would be met.
In his remarks, the
Managing Director of
ALCON, Mr.Gianfranco
Folcioni, commended the
Government of Akwa
Ibom State for its hard
work in serving the
people and pledged to
ensure that work on the
internal terminal is
completed on schedule.
He enthused that the
concept of the new
terminal was in line with
current trends in global
airport architecture
stating that the finishing
of Ibom airport will mark
it out for an international
award in airport
architecture.
Also speaking Engr. Etido
Inyang, the Special
Adviser on Technical
Matters, one of the
departments overseeing
the development of the
project, said the new
project would further
consolidate on the
economic gains of the
state which has changed
from being a pedestrian
state to a destination. www.worldstagegroup.com/worldstage/index.php?&id=3690&active=news&start=9
