The minister of state for education, Chief Ezenwo Wike has said that the federal government had spent over 26 billion Naira to facilitate the activities of the Universal Basic Education Commission UBEC, across the country.

The minister who stated this yesterday during the handing over and commissioning of the China assisted projects for the construction of rural schools in Kaduna, Katsina and Ogun states including the Federal Capital Territory FCT, said the amount “have been spent to supply textbooks in English, Mathematics, science and other core subjects” as well as teachers-in-service training which has taken a new dimension with vigor and innovation.

The minister directed that all Universal Basic Education Boards in states where the new schools are cited to “supply teachers’ desks and chairs which are not provided under this project in order to complement the effort of the Chinese government and facilitate a conducive classroom atmosphere in the schools.”

The executive secretary of UBEC, Dr Ahmed Mohammed Modibbo, in his speech, stated that the project was China’s development intervention in the basic education sub-sector and consists of a block of six classrooms, one administrative block, seven toilets, a borehole, a set of pupils’ furniture, a car park and an all-round fence in each of the four schools with a total estimate of 308 million naira.

He urged the benefiting schools to make adequate use of the projects provided in accordance with the national educational and developmental needs, noting that “these should include posting of adequate and qualified staff, supply of sufficient instructional materials, proper care and maintenance of the schools and their environments.”

Modibbo said the collaboration of the two countries has not only led to the completion of the projects in the four states, but in the training of some teachers and UBEC officials in far away China, on school administration and teaching methodologies.
