An undergraduate of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, University of Lagos, Miss Machado Munirat Adebowale has emerged as the overall winner in the maiden edition of Budding Engineers, Scientists and Technologists (BEST) Competition organized by the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja. Miss Adebowale took the first position with 81.33 percent among twenty-two (22) undergraduates of Engineering, Science and Technology related disciplines in Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education. Besides Adebowale, three (3) students from the Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering and two (2) others from Systems Engineering of the University of Lagos participated in the exhibition and defence of their projects orally before the Panel of Judges for the selection of winners. The overall best, Miss Adebowale was rewarded with cash prize of N250, 000.00, a laptop and IPAD while the other students of the University who took the 5th, 8 th and 9 th positions were given N20, 000.00 and a laptop each. The Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufai presented the prizes to Miss Adebowale and the other nine winners on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 in Abuja. It would be recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education in July 2011 called for the participation of undergraduate students of Engineering, Science and Technology related disciplines in Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in the maiden edition of Budding Engineers, Scientists and Technologists (BEST) Competition. Consequent upon the assessment of abstracts of projects submitted five students from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and two others from Systems Engineering, University of Lagos were shortlisted and invited to Abuja to exhibit and defend their projects. |
