PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into the HTML source document and interpreted by a web server with a PHP processor module, which generates the web page document.
PHP can be deployed on most web servers and as a standalone interpreter, on almost every operating system and platform free of charge.
PHP was originally created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995. The main implementation of PHP is now produced by The PHP Group and serves as the default standard for PHP.

The PHP code is executed on the server, generating HTML which is then sent to the client. The client would receive the results of running that script, but would not know what the underlying code was.This is what distinguishes PHP from something like client-side JavaScript.
