Nollywood & Nudity. . . . Whats The Big Deal? by Okijajuju1(m): 9:19am On Apr 30, 2012
HI

This is my first post ever in the TV/Movie section and I guess that this topic may have been beaten and over-beaten before now. Anyways, I still had this debate over the weekend and once again it was about nudity in movies and all worth not. I really do not understand what the big deal is.

If we all agree that acting is an art used to entertain, educate and inform people, why then do Nigerians look at actresses that go nude on the big screen as being sluts or whores?! How do you act a movie about prostitution without somebody dressing in provocative outfits?! How do you act movie about sex without sex in it?! I feel that this is the reason why most Nigerian actors and actresses can never make it into the world stage. I think its rather myopic of us. I remember visiting the Louvre museum in Paris and seeing statues of N'aked men all over, and even around Paris. I wondered what would have been if these artists were told not to make images of nude men. Why do we concentrate so much on the nudity rather than the message of the movie?!

Here are some hollywood A-list actresses that have gone nude severally in movies that we all loved and yet they are still icons;

Angelina Jolie
Number of movies in which she’s appeared nude: 12
Most recently seen naked in: Changeling

Jolie has recently garnered headlines for her tireless charity work, a trend which has sadly overshadowed her stunning physical beauty. Thankfully, we have movies like Wanted and Beowulf to remind us.

Penelope Cruz
Number of movies in which she’s appeared nude: 9
Most recently seen naked in: Elegy

Cruz might strike some as one of the more surprising members of the All-Nude Team, as she appears decidedly clothed in recent U.S. releases like Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Volver. But head over to the foreign section of the video store, and you’ll discover a host of titles featuring a more liberated Cruz.

Heather Graham
Number of movies in which she’s appeared nude: 6
Most recently seen naked in: The Hangover

Graham’s disdain for clothes first became evident to movie audiences with her unforgettable performance as Rollergirl in 1997’s Boogie Nights. She recently credited her impressive stripper moves in The Hangover to a “female empowerment class” she took — a fine testament to the many benefits of continuing education.

Monica Bellucci
Number of movies in which she’s appeared nude: 17(!)
Most recently seen naked in: L’ Uomo che ama

Like Cruz, this sultry Italian saves most of her nude scenes for the foreign-film aisle. Despite her truly astounding resume — or perhaps because of it — Mel Gibson chose Bellucci to play Mary Magdalen in 2004’s The Passion of the Christ.

Julianne Moore
Number of movies in which she’s appeared nude: 6
Most recently seen naked in: Blindness

Fiery redhead Moore has demonstrated on ample occasions that her cuffs and collar do indeed match (ah, Boogie Nights). She’s also earned four Academy Award nominations, which should strike no one as a coincidence.

Kate Winslet
Number of movies in which she’s appeared nude: 10
Most recently seen naked in: The Reader

Oscar winner Winslet’s enthusiasm for nude scenes is so well-established that she might as well serve as the MVP of the All-Nude Team. Sadly, she recently declared that she intends to abandon on-screen nudity for good. Let’s just hope that’s another example of her dry British wit.

The surprising thing is that I barely even remember these women going nude in any movies at all.

I think we need to remove this notion of nude actresses being whores from our minds. I think an actress that can go nude and pull off a decent movie is more professional than those those that do crap out of fear of what society would say.

@ Okiji-Juju.. Its not about the movie roles alone, have you seen what these actresses wear for shows.. Displaying b.o.obs and all on the red carpet. So what does that say about them?

Btw, you cant compare Angelina Jolies body to that of Mercy Johnson for example. We africans are full fleshed, imajine Angelina and Mercy rocking the same skimpy outfit, whos gonna look more of a slut?

Its not in our culture to expose, we cant copy every thing the whites do. So as long as they keep on exposing, they would be tagged as sluts.

Culture has nothing to do with movies.

Movies are about entertainment.
