Spain said Wednesday that one of its nationals had gone missing in southwestern Nigeria and was feared kidnapped. The disappearance of the man "has all the characteristics of a kidnapping for economic reasons," said Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo.
Spanish media reported that the missing man is a 58-year-old doctor who works for a clinic belonging to a foundation financially supported by Catholic institution Opus Dei in southwestern Nigeria, a predominantly Christian area.
"The organisation he works for has asked for total discretion," the foreign minister added as he arrived in parliament.
"It is in the southwest of the country, not in the north, so there are no political implications of any type."
Spain's embassy in Nigeria was working with the local authorities to resolve the case and the foreign ministry was in "permanent contact" with the man's family, a foreign ministry spokesman said.

Machimbarrena, a member of staff of Niger Foundation Hospital, located in Enugu, was seen on Saturday morning around Thinkers Corner area of the state and was said to have reunited with the hospital community.

The Nigerian secret police today announced the arrest of a 7-man kidnap gang in Osun state in the Southwestern parts of Nigeria. The gang were paraded before journalists at the headquarters of the SSS in Abuja.

Spokesperson for the State Security Services, Marilyn Ogar told reporters that the group kidnapped Mohammed Majed Ishmael Al Ali, a Dubai-based businessman and United Arab Emirates citizen who was invited to visit Nigeria on a phony business deal.

The group earlier proposed Al Ali that he would benefit from a large business deal through Finuche Investments, however, as soon as Al Ali arrived Nigeria the group kidnapped him and held him in a remote village in Osun State.

The SSsS said Mr. Al Ali was held hostage for 60 days in Aboriogun village near Ikoyi town in Isokan local government area of Osun state.

There was pandemonium Friday in a private school in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, southwest Nigeria, when the headteacher of the school engaged a kidnap suspect, Sodiq Abiodun,18, in a fight when he was about kidnapping some pupils of the school.
The incident occurred at Nissi Nursery and Primary School, Amolaso area in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun state.
Narrating the incident to our correspondent, the headteacher of the school, Mr Adeyemi Adeleke stated that if not for the vigilance of the residents, the boy would have made away with some of their pupils who were playing on a field behind the school compound.
According to him,”we were all inside the school busy collating the pupils’ report cards while some pupils were on the field playing football. One of the residents just came in to alert us that a boy is with the children on the field and they suspect him. I quickly rushed down there and enquired from him about his mission.
“He was speaking like a fulani boy and before I could speak further, he had removed a knife with him and we started fighting. He wounded me but with the help of the people in the area, we overpowered him and handed him over to the vigilance group in their office.”
He further stated that the matter was later transferred to Ibara police station by the vigilance group afterr he had made a statement in their office, saying,”the police could not help out as we were told to follow the man to his residence to confirm whether he is sane or not.”
When our correspondent visited the office of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Ogun state chapter office at the Old Works Yard in Abeokuta, the camp Commandant confirmed the incident and disclosed that the boy had been taken the police station after interogation.
The Camp Commandant, Mr Tunde Sunday Oshunsi said, “the boy was taken down to our office by some residents of Amolaso and the school headteacher. We discovered that he had been thoroughly beaten with cuts in many parts of his body. We interogated him and since we didn’t have a cell here to keep him, we transferred him to the police station and the police rejected him, saying he had been beaten too much.
“The police advised us to follow him to his house to know his state of health.”
The suspect who spoke with our correspondent in the office of the vigilance group identified himself as Sodiq Abiodun,18, an apprentice shoe maker.
“I am not a kidnapper, my father caused all this.
He has not allowed me to go out in the last four days. He was threatening to kill me and when I found my way to escape, I ran out,” he said.
While asking for his mission in the school with a knife, the young boy stated that he wanted to protect himself from being assaulted by his father.
“I didn’t mean to kidnap anybody. My father lives at Akinoshin compound in Ago Oko area of Abeokuta. My mother is blind while my father is not doing anything than to be beating me and collecting all money on me. That was why I ran out from home.”
A police source from Ibara police station confirmed the incident to our correspondent on phone, saying that the boy had been given back to the vigilance group to look into his matter.
“It was true that they brought the boy to our station, but immediately we saw him with several cuts on his body coupled with the way he was behaving, we advised the vigilante and the school authority to follow him to his residence to confirm the state of his health first before any further steps would be taken,” the police source hinted.

Suspected kidnappers arrested in Ibadan

Four people, including two cousins, have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a housewife, two children and a sales girl at Elebu area of Oluyole Estate extension, Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 16.

The suspects, Adeleke Adebayo, Tope Edward Ogunsuyi, Busuyi Oyebanji, and Babatunde Oluwasanmi, were said to have kidnapped Mrs Adeniji Bisola and others from their residence at about 7.30 a.m. on sallah day.

The state Police Commissioner, Baba Adida Bolanta, while addressing newsmen in Ibadan on Monday, said it was when the neighbours discovered that the people had been kidnapped that they informed the husband, who later informed policemen at the Oluyole Police Station.

He said the husband, Mr Adeniji Busayo, who works and resides in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said he had received a telephone call from unknown persons that his wife, two children and the sales girl had been kidnapped.

The police boss added that the suspected kidnappers had demanded from the husband N100 million as ransom before they could be released.

According to him, police detectives immediately swung into action, visited the scene of the crime and with the tracker mechanism installed in the vehicle used, it was sighted at Plot 11, Road L, Olubadan Estate, Alakia.

He said the residents— Mr and Mrs Adeleke Adebayo — were arrested and interrogated, adding that they confessed that it was one Tope Ogunsuyi, a friend of the Adelekes, who brought the vehicle there for safe-keeping.

The police boss said that policemen were led to the principal suspects house at Ojurin-Akobo area of the state capital, where the victims were discovered and rescued.
He said the suspects did not only kidnap the victims, they also ransacked the house and stole the sum of N215,000, ATM cards, cheque books and handsets.

He added that the item recovered from the suspects were a Land Rover Discovery Jeep, an L-shaped silver colour pipe wrapped with handkerchief used as a gun, the victims’ jewelries, clothing and the children’s shoes and charms.

Nigeria (Yoruba) kidnappers release UAE man, 7 arrested

By Joe Brock

ABUJA | Thu Mar 29, 2012 11:21pm IST

(Reuters) - A Nigerian criminal gang released a United Arab Emirates man on March 19 in the southern town of Ibadan after holding him for 60 days, the state security services (SSS) said on Thursday, adding that seven men - but not the gang leaders - had been arrested.

The kidnappers tricked Mohammed Khamis al Ali into coming to Nigeria on January 20 to carry out a business deal in the southern commercial hub Lagos, the SSS said. He was seized and held in a remote village in nearby Osun state for 2 months.

Nigeria has become infamous for a type of fraud called "419 scams", after the number in the penal code. These often take the form of emails asking for a business partner or bank details, or promising vast riches in return for a small up-front fee.

Kidnapping is another major enterprise in Africa's second biggest economy, the vast majority of victims being Nigerian.

Snatching foreigners in the oil producing Niger Delta has also been common in recent years, though there has been a sharp reduction since an amnesty for militants in 2009. Most kidnap victims were released after payment of a ransom.

"(Al Ali) was lured to visit Nigeria for a phantom business transaction by a fake company, Finuche Investments, was abducted by a kidnap syndicate and held hostage for about 60 days," SSS spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar told reporters.

Ogar said the seven men arrested were guarding al Ali but the masterminds were still at large. The suspects who had been arrested stood behind Ogar as she spoke, heads bowed, some in tears.

When questioned, they said they dumped al Ali in Ibadan after their bosses stopped contacting them with instructions about what to do with him. Neither Ogar nor the suspects mentioned payment of a ransom.

Kidnappings apparently motivated by Islamist ideology rather than cash are an emerging trend in largely Muslim northern Nigeria, where the militant group Boko Haram is waging a low level insurgency against the central government.

A Briton and an Italian seized in May last year were killed on March 8 before Nigerian and British special forces could rescue them, while a German seized in Kano, northern Nigeria's biggest city, in January is still missing.

A group claiming to be from al Qaeda's north African wing posted a statement on the internet last week saying they were holding the German kidnapped in January.

SSS arrests suspected ritualists in Akure yorubaland
From Julius Alabi, Akure

THREE suspected ritualists and their godfather who specialised in using human beings for their illegal act have been arrested by officials of Ondo Command of the State Security Services (SSS).

advertisement

The suspects, Femi Alo, Kayode Ajayi and Ojo Gegeleso and their godfather, Sunday Olusola (a.k.a. Ekun), were said to have been apprehended in their hideout at Akure metropolis as they were trying to use one of their victims for ritual.

Parading the suspects yesterday in Akure, the Director of SSS, Mr. Boma Spero-Jack, said many innocent people in the state had fallen victims to the deadly gang while those who could not be used for ritual were compelled to bring specific amount of money to free themselves.

According to him, during the raid of the suspects' camp known as "Evil Camp" at Araromi, a Honda Accord car with registration number: Ondo AW 137 AKR and a Sports Utility Van with registration number: Lagos FC 239 EKY, belonging to their godfather, were recovered from them.

"We went to action as cases of kidnapping have become a daily occurrence in Ondo State and we have been given information on how we could get them and when we got to their abode. A new victim, Ganiyat Animasan, was about to be led to their shrine at Araromi", he noted.

Spero-Jack, who took reporters to the shrine at Araromi, said a married woman simply known as Funmilayo who was about boarding a vehicle from Akure to Abuja before she was kidnapped, was swindled and duped to the tune of N250,000 and was also Molested.

He however said the woman miraculously escaped from the gang before she could be used for ritual.

The SSS chief, however, appealed to the people of the state to board vehicles at the park since the kidnappers operated more on highways.

Narrating her ordeal, Ganiyat Animasan, a student of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, said she boarded the kidnappers' vehicle along Owo/Akure Expressway on her way to school. ( remember one chance started in yorubaland even before independence hence the origin of kidnapping and ritualism in nigeria)

She added that suddenly, an argument ensued between two of the "passengers" she met in the vehicle and a few minutes later, she lost consciousness and found herself in a dreadful shrine.

"I was about removing my underwear when men of the SSS came to rescue me from the hand of the kidnappers. If not, I would have been dead by now", she said.

Three of suspects, Gegeleso, Alo and Ajayi, while speaking with The Guardian confessed to the crime, saying that they were errand boys who brought innocent people to the shrine for a fee.

"We don't know what happens to the people there after we might have taken them to the shrine. The remaining job is left to our godfather because he is the head of the shrine", they said.

Female Undergraduate Escapes From Ritualists in ogun state ,south west nigeria yorubaland
A 200-level student of the University of Benin, Edo State, Miss Sandra Balogun, has narrated how she escaped from ritualists’ den in a bush near Lisa in Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria.

According to Sandra, 18, her neighbour at Abesan Housing Estate, Ipaja, Lagos lured her to a two-room apartment in a bush around Lisa village where he handed her to the ritualists.

She said: “my neighbour lured me to Ijoko area of Ogun State, pretending that he will help me to release a music album because I am also a good singer. After Ijoko, we trekked through a footpath to reach Lisa village.

“When we got to the isolated two-room building, the suspect handed me over to the ritualists saying, ‘this is the girl’ and he disappeared”.

She stated that her captors took her to a canal where they washed her head. Then she was taken to a room and a liquid substance was given to her to lick. When she refused to lick the liquid, Sandra claimed her hands were tired backwards.

She disclosed that after she was forced to lick the liquid substance, she was left alone in a room. She said the kidnappers later came with another victim.

“They opened the door and later took the victim away to the canal to perform head washing ritual,” she said, adding that this afforeded her the opportunity to escape.

Sandra said she reported the incident to her father and Sango Ota Police Station and the neighbour who lured her to the bush was arrested.

When the suspect led a team of policemen from Lagos and Ogun state to the hideout of the suspected ritualists, they jumped into the canal and escaped. But a woman said to be the wife of one of the ritualists was arrested and is now in police custody.

Sandra told the police that the ritualists stole her N61,000 and her laptop, adding that her father gave her the money as part of her school fees.

The two suspects are currently assisting the police to arrest the fleeing ritualists.

Ondo southwest nigeria Ritualist, Samuel Olatunji, Others Arrested for Hunchback Murder

FOUR suspected ritualists were apprehended by the Ondo State Police Command at the weekend for allegedly killing a 25-year-old hunchback, Adeoye Dowo, in Ago Alaye village of the state.

The suspects - Samuel Olatunji, Dayo Araromi, Lekan Holo and Oluwatosin Elebile - allegedly conspired and lured Dowo through a lady to the bush where they strangled him to death before removing his hunch.

Addressing reporters in his office, the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Sani Magaji, said Dowo's father reported that his son was missing and investigations revealed that the victim was kidnapped by Olatunji, who later confessed to the crime during interrogation. Magaji said Olatunji led the police detectives to the scene where the hunchback was murdered and the hunch neatly removed.

Olatunji confirmed his involvement in the crime, saying the victim was lured by a lady to the bush where he and his accomplices strangled him to death and removed his hunch.

We contacted a herbalist on how to make quick money and he assured us that if we could bring a hunch for ritual, we would become rich and we immediately swung into action by employing some ladies to lure Dowo to where we killed him before removing the hunch.

We kept the hunch in a plastic (container) and hid it in a bush but unfortunately for us the police traced us and I was apprehended while others ran away.

“Before we got to where we kept the hunch, they had taken it away and I suspected my friends took it in order not to leave any trace.”

But the herbalist, Oluwatosin Elebile, denied his involvement in the crime, saying the suspects only came to him for assistance.

The police said efforts are on to arrest the missing suspects, while two others - Oyeleyinbo Patrick and Fatunwa Tunde - were arrested at the herbalist's house for unlawful possession of firearms.

Some of the items recovered from the two suspects include one handgun and a dane gun with five live cartridges.

In another development, one Sunday James and others allegedly terrorizing residents of Akure and its environs have been arrested by the men of the anti-robbery squad.

The other suspects - Yohanna Francis, Mohammed Ismaila, Usman Abubakar and Mutari Buda - were allegedly behind the robbery that took place along the Emure Eporo Road earlier this year where a police Inspector was killed. The police also arrested some suspected cattle rustlers in Akure, the state capital.
