Lagos Issues Quit Notice To Sacked Doctors. by RICHIEBOI1(m): 1:15pm On May 11, 2012
Lagos State government yesterday ordered the sacked doctors in its employment to quit their official residences in spite of claims that there are rooms for negotiations.

The eviction notice, signed by the Secretary, Staff Housing Board, Mr. I.A Shoyemi, and dated May 8, 2012, asked the doctors to vacate their quarters with immediate effect.

It reads in part: “Consequent upon your dismissal from the service of the Lagos State government with effect from May 4, 2012 and in ac-cordance with the civil service rule 13115, no officer shall continue to occupy state government quarters after the date on which his resignation/ dismissal takes effect.

“I wish to request you to vacate the state government staff quarters.“In view of the above, you are hereby requested to submit the keys to the quarters to the Secretary of Staff Housing Board.”

Some of the affected doctors yesterday confirmed to National Mirror that they received the notice yesterday evening.

It was also gathered that the affected doctors had been given until 5a.m. today to vacate the staff quarters.

But the State Tenancy Law states that tenants should be given six months’ eviction notice.

Reacting to the development yesterday during a congress organised by the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, the First Vice-President of the state chapter of the association, Dr. Johnson Emene, condemned the action.

He said that the doctors were covered by the tenancy law.

Emene added that the association had instructed the doctors to ignore the quit notice and that the NMA executives had begun negotiations with government on the issue. “We have told them not to panic. Within the next 13 hours, we are going to know the outcome.

Nobody will evict the doctors between now and tomorrow,” he said. The NMA had on Tuesday warned newly recruited doctors in the state to stay away from hospitals pending the determination of the industrial crisis between both parties.

The warning followed the controversial sacking of 788 doctors by the state government on Monday.

But the state government yesterday explained that the sacking of doc-tors was in the interest of the over 20 million residents of the state and patients in the state-owned hospitals.

The government, however, said that it had not foreclosed negotiation with the doctors.

the Lagos State govt is just being unfair in the treatment of the doctors and the people do not seem to be revolting. i am very sure it would have been a different case if it was a pdp led state that took that kind of action. the acn people would have been ranting here and there

is the NMA a union of some sort? Or a professional body? Can they authorize strikes? Is there no Labour Union for this? I'm a bit confused.

yes! Imagine how many people died because Fashola was soooo unreasonable.

Imagine how many people have died because their doctors could not afford to rent a house close to their hospital
Imagine how many brilliant doctors have fled Nigeria because the remunerations they were receiving were substandard, despite the fact that they were severely overworked in Lagos State. (seriously, 1000 doctors to 17 million people?!)

You jealous?

All the doctors have asked is a reasonable payment scheme. Is it REALLY absurd to pay a Doctor 200k monthly in Lagos State? A doctor that sees an average of 50 patients daily? A doctor that spends his day immersed in disease, death, HIV patients, TB etc? Someone who spent 6 years in School + 1 year housemanship?

Is it so BAD for a doctor to expect to recieve some tax breaks for his service to humanity?

You folks are quick to insist that doctors owe a service to humanity. What do Nigerians owe them in return? Can you point to any landlord who has voluntarily given someone a discount upon producing his medical license?

Greedy Nigerians always want to TAKE, nothing in you to GIVE. I blame the rise of the new generation churches for this mindset.

Fashola has gone too far with this whole issue. His bluff is so embarrassing for a public servant of his calibre. He has set a precedence of intimidation, even the newly hired doctors would lack the gut to make demands when there is need to do so. If the govt had opened to dialogue the issue would not have degenerated to this level. The sacked docs have the right to demand for better condition of service, afterall they also make money for lagos state govt thru' patients admitted into lagos hospitals. It is time fashola stopped seeing himself as demigod and opened up to dialogue. The 373 doctors newly hired are far less sufficient in Lagos. He is laughing now, let' see who laugh last

You must be a very stupid man for saying that about the government. Who is being reckless here? The affirmative government or the stupid doctors who neglected the first law of their profession, which is to save life first and embarked on some lousy strike. So in your abundant foolishness, you believe it would have been better for the government to wait and engage them in some fruitless negotiations while a large percentage of the patients dies? You must be outta your freaking mind.

Good one Fash, ride on!

the wage disparity between doctors and others who also went to school is extremely wide and to make matters worse, they still always demand for more money and less taxes.are they gods?

The level of foolishness and ignorance here on NL is becoming alarming. Doctors will beg? Are you in your right senses? A heart surgeon will beg you? You have no clue and are as d.u.mb as Fashola. Many of these are specialist doctors who are being sought after everywhere. All they need to do is relocate. Tanzania, Angola, Ghana, Senegal, Gambia, Mideast, there are opportunities for them everywhere. You are a real dunce to think they are the loosers. Lagos state is the biggest looser here because the people you employed are all neophytes that cant run the hospitals. This is a disaster to Lagos health care and will set Lagos back for at least 20 years!

shows how ineffectual your reasoning is.so the doctors can keep using innocent lives as bargaining chips just so their already high pay can go higher?at least now they know they are dispensable.

Let them go to hell! These guys called doctors are so mean, cold and so unprofessional, and treat every patient as if they are government property (like trash, I mean).
If they go anywhere in the world with such attitude, most of them would be in jail, or be sued for un-professionalism by now. Off with bad rubbish!
