Due to the high rate of non-communicable diseases such as Hypertension and diabetes Mellitus in our society, Her Excellency, Chief Mrs. Mercy Odochi orji, Osinulormaramma, wife of the Executive Governor of Abia State, in collaboration with Ministry of Health and a Bio-medical Engineer and Imaging Consultant, Chima Chukwu from the Diaspora, will be rendering free medical Services to hypertensive and diabetics persons in the three (3) senatorial Zones of Abia State. These free medical services are courtesy of the amiable and people-oriented Governor of Abia State, Chief T.A. Orji (Ochendo) who has relentlessly taken care of the health needs and general well being of Abians.

A critical look at deaths the world over, World Health Organizations report in 2008 showed that out of 57 million deaths, 36 million were due to Non-communicable diseases. Non-Communicable diseases are therefore, the most frequent causes of death in most countries such as America, the Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, South East Asia etc.
In the African region, the prevalence of Non-communicable diseases is rising rapidly and is projected to cause almost three-quarters (3/4) as many deaths as communicable, maternal, prenatal and nutritional diseases by the year 2020, and to exceed them as the most common causes of death by 2030.
This may have explained why his Excellency, Chief T.A. Orji Ochendo, the Executive Governor of Abia State in His characteristic manner of prioritizing the health needs of Abians funded the State Ministry of Health to define the spectrum of non-communicable diseases in the State. And from a recent survey report released by Dr. Oga, Abia State Commissioner for health, over half a million Abians, representing about 31.8% have hypertension and about 60,000 or 3.6% Abians are diabetic.
We cannot but appreciate the concern of Governor T.A. Orji Administration’s foresight, commitment and zeal in trying to guarantee the longevity and good health of Abians through the construction of over 260 primary health-care centers scattered all over Abia, the establishment of diagnostic centers and specialist Hospitals at Umuahia and Aba, as well as the renovation of existing Health institutions in the State.
At this point it would suffice to say that the Administration has attracted to the state a lot of medical missions from the Diaspora while today’s 3 day exercise is a tripartite understanding between the office of her Excellency in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health and a Bio-Medical Engineer and Imagining Consultant, Chima Chukwu.
This opportunity is unique and should not be allowed to slip off our hands. Thomas Edison captured it all when he said “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in over-alls and looks like works”. It is therefore against this backdrop that Her Excellency, Chief Mrs. Mercy Odochi Orji, Osinulomaramma, appeals to the Hypertensive and diabetic persons in the state, to avail themselves if this unique opportunity and be captured.
The time is now.
