THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the 2012 Unified Tertiary matriculation Examination (UTME) national cut-off mark, to kick-start admission processes into universities and other tertiary institutions in the country.

The national cut-off mark for admissions to universities in Nigeria for 2012/2013 academic session was fixed at 180, while the board set 160 as the cut-off mark for admissions into polytechnics, colleges of education and other diploma-awarding institutions.

The cut-off points were decided in Abuja, on Monday, at the 2012 combined policy committee meeting on admissions to degree-awarding institutions, National Diploma (ND), Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and National Innovation Diploma-awarding institutions.

Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, who chaired the meeting, urged the various institutions to adhere strictly to admission guidelines, which stipulated a 70:30 ratio for technology and non-technology for ND programmes and 60:40 science/arts ratio for the universities and colleges of education.

why set cut off marks at 180 and 160 when government are aware that such scores are too low to earn prospective applicants admissions. Schools often admit aggregate scores ranging frm 300 to 240, a candidate with 160, 180 stands no chance of reaching these scores. The idea seems to be collect money frm thousands of pple and admit a tenth of them. How unfair

Of what essence is it?....same thing was said last year but schools stood their grounds on 200..All this is noise making they should think of how to improve our standard of education in this nation and stop all this propagandas...

God bless Nigeria. I don't think the schools will follow the procedure, even if they say they will, those with 180 will not be given admission.

I'm confused. So instead of increasing the standards of education, sending teachers for training, creating libraries, they choose the easier route of lowering the standards. And we wonder why uneducated Boko Haramists kill without reason? This will solve NOTHING.

Have you bothered to find out how many applicants scored above 200 this year instead of condemning these bodies. This year, jamb results, i think averaged around 180, without the cut-off being lowered, many people won't get into school. The result may also not be used to mean declining intelligence, but could be seen as increased standard in the exam questions. In any case, I think there is a system for deciding what the cut-off should be every year. Schools to proud to admit students will lose good students to competitors. So, it is not like our boys and girls are dull but the standard has improved. take a look at the jamb questions of 1990/91 and ask yourself if the students of nowadays won't score 300/300 or 400/400 as the case may be. Good move! and goodluck jambitos!

. . .a sad reminder that the present day students are not reading again. They'll rather mortgage their productive times for 2go, BB Ping, Facebook, seasonal movies, soap operas and cable channels being enhanced by an improving power supply. We're almost doomed in this country. Civilization is intoxicating us. I entered with 200 points anyway, and there were lesser distractions during my time (about 6yrs back); so I won't even advise my enemy's child to be happy with 180 out of 400 marks. Truth is always bitter when said like this!
