Written by Nan Thursday, 24 May 2012 Former Head of State, Retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has hinged the challenges facing the education sector on misplacement of values.
Gowon, who spoke in Ibadan yesterday at the education summit organized by the Oyo State government, said parents must pay more attention to the education of their wards.
He also called on parents to complement learning in schools by teaching good virtues to their children at home through exemplary behaviour.
Gowon said parents must take time to assist their children in their home work rather than allow them waste precious time watching home video.
He said teaching and learning were the key factors to human development, adding that every child must be given the benefit of education in the country.
Gowon, who was the chairman of the summit, decried the state of infrastructure in schools across the country.
He said dilapidated classroom structures coupled with lack of teaching materials had discouraged pupils and students from learning.
The former head of state recalled that the Universal Primary Education (UPE) scheme was established by his government because of the shortage of teachers in public primary schools at the time.
'Because of my passion for education, my government did everything possible to encourage education in the country,'' he said.
Gowon, however, said government must invest adequately in education and provide incentives that would make teaching attractive.
In a keynote address, Prof Afolabi Oldapo, former Head of Service of the Federation, said government must invest adequately in the education sector.
He argued that free education could not produce quality education, noting that education could only be meaningful when people pay for it. Ajimobi, on his part, explained that the summit became necessary because of the backward state of education in the state.
He said the state, which used to be in the forefront of education in the country, took the 34th position out of 36 states in the WAEC-organized examination for 2011.
The governor said the state would soon establish its own technical university to provide openings for youths yearning for tertiary education. (NAN |
