Nigeria will aim to win big at home against Namibia on Sunday so as to restore public confidence in a team who are yet to win since February.

The Super Eagles made up mostly of players from the domestic league have lost their last two friendlies against Egypt and Peru after they were held to a goalless draw by hosts Rwanda in a 2013 Nations Cup qualifier in February.

The pressure is therefore on them to win this 2014 World Cup qualifier in style in the southern coastal town of Calabar to enjoy public backing again.

Former international skipper Stephen Keshi took over the team in November after Samson Siasia failed to qualify them for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

And under ‘Big Boss’, the Eagles have played seven matches, won two, drew three and lost the games to Egypt and Peru.

Nigeria and Namibia last clashed in a combined qualifying tournament for the 2002 World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.

The Eagles won the first game at home 4-0, before they travelled to Windhoek to again humble the Brave Warriors 2-0.

Keshi has been courageous to drop top stars like Mikel Obi, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Osaze Odemwingie, while putting his faith in the players from the domestic league he has worked with since December

He has also recalled goalkeeper Austin Ejide and John Utaka, who last appeared for Nigeria at the 2010 World Cup. Utaka has been rewarded for his exploits with recently crowned French Ligue 1 champions Montpellier.

The Eagles will be without influential skipper Joseph Yobo and Inter Milan midfielder Joel Obi for this series of qualifiers beginning with Namibia due to injury.

As a result, Israel-based Efe Ambrose or Gege Soriola, who features for South African club Free State Stars, will most likely fill in for Yobo in central defence, while the versatile Fengor Ogude stands in for Obi.

Outstanding Olympic team star Raheem Lawal will at least miss the Namibia clash after he was delayed from joining up with the rest of the squad by visa regularization in his Spanish base.

However, he will be available for the matches against Malawi in Blantyre on June 9 and Rwanda on June 17 in Calabar.

Namibia, who came within a whisker of qualifying for this year’s Nations Cup, have prepared for this encounter in Germany.

They have a sprinkling of players from the South African league like Rudolf Bester (Orlando Pirates), Lazarus Kaimbi (Jomo Cosmos)and Henrico Botes (Platinum Stars).

Manfred Stark of German club Hansa Rostock is the only player based in Europe on the squad.

They drew 0-0 with Mozambique in a warm-up game last month.

The pitch is very, very poor. Can't even cut the grass. Is there no one out there who realises we need fluidity, pace and goals. The ball keeps hanging. Haba.

Good one, Ike Uche. The ref had better wake up. Some of these tackles are very rough.
