Corruption is not new in Nigeria. It is found among poor, rich and among leaders that took an oath to serve the country with truthfulness. Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is a government organisation enmeshed in corruption has again been confirmed following the arrest of the organisation's two security officials by the Inspector General of Police monitoring team on Wednesday for stealing $20,000 from a passenger's baggage.

That the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is a government organisation enmeshed in corruption has again been confirmed following the arrest of the organisation’s two security officials by the Inspector General of Police monitoring team on Wednesday for stealing $20,000 from a passenger’s baggage.

The security officials, who have been flown to Abuja on the order of the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Abubakar, were said to have stolen the money from the baggage of an airline operator during the screening of his baggage at the screening point of the Murtala Muhammed Airport terminal one.

According to the airline operator who does not want his name in print for now, trouble started when he was to board a 6.5 a.m. flight on First Nation to Abuja to perform a national exercise.

Getting to the screening point of the departure hall of the MMA2 terminal, as expected, he positioned his hand luggage on the screening machine and walked through the screening being conducted on passengers by the FAAN security officials.

When the flight was announced, he took his hand luggage and proceeded on board without knowing that the security officials had removed $20, 000 from his luggage.

However, the bubble burst when the airline operator tried to bring out his complimentary card which he wanted to give to a long-time friend whom he met on board but discovered that his money was gone.

The airline operator, who said his money was still intact at the screening point, said at that point, it was impossible for him to disembark from the aircraft as the gangway was already closed by the cabin crew hence, he decided to put a call through to the managing director of FAAN who said he was in Abuja but directed him to contact the director of security in FAAN.

But despite the complaints made by the passenger, neither the FAAN chief nor his director of security was forthcoming as they failed to communicate with him for a whole week.

Sensing that the management of FAAN was not interested in his case, he decided to report the matter to the police IG, who asked him to forward a letter of complaint to his office and copy the Minister of Aviation, Stella Adaeze Oduah.

Though this is bad but why was he carrying such money - to help bribe those rogues in Abuja? It is time we take this cashless economy thing seriously.

Everybody is asking why he's carrying such amount and has neglected d topic on ground. Even if he had $5,000 they would have stollen it.

The human scanners at the Airport are no longer used for the purpose they were installed, but to scan for money & valuables they can steal from innocent passengers.

God will help us in Nigeria. Corruption every where.

exactly a month ago same thing happened to my ralative that arrived from the USA. Her money got missing after she was waiting to collect her luggage fron the belt. It was obvious it was the security or touts that did it. The immigration officers could only watch her cry and said sorry by the time we got there to pick her up. Shame to this nation

It's only his word against theirs that the two guys stole the money, to be honest.
Even with the gangway closed, he would be well within his rights to demand to disembark from the plane...especially considering the sums involved.

Look, I know airline operatives can be crooked, but it's his word against theirs, he has ZERO proof that the money was not taken beforehand.

Hmmm! Such a thing CAN'T happen to me. You've got to be a bit too rich to loose $20,000 like that. Now if it had been a mugging or armed robbery i can understand.
Re: $20,000 Disappears From Passenger's Luggage At MMA2 Screening Point by Nobody: 8:30pm On Jun 30, 2012
This case happened several weeks ago and am surprised am just seeing it here today. It was €38,000 that was stolen. And the culprit was found to be on same flight. No faan officials have the rights to open up your bag in your absence even when there is contraband in there, you must be present there before your luggage is opened and this is done by the passengers themselves.

If the victim cannot be apprehended for travelling with excess money
no need stealing it thereby breaking the code of conduct of the security
officials. The major problem is that there may not be concrete proof that such amount of money is in the collection

I don't trust those guys one bit, Is it just me or has anyone experienced occasional conveyor belt break down ? It happens all the time and I suspect they always stop it deliberately to ransack through people's luggage backroom. We had to wait for over an hour last time.

^^^Hehehe grin. Don't get your knickers in a twist mate......you sound so angry and bitter, for what i don't know.

Igbos don't 'love' money more than others. It may seem that way to your lazy, awuf-loving, bigotted arse because they're very industrious and hardworking, and also know how to enjoy the fruits of their labour. You can die of bitterness if you like, na your problem be that.

Cheers wink.
