Japanese Animation (anime) Vs Western Animation by Nobody: 4:12pm On Jul 05, 2012
I watch both and enjoy both but i think the japanese have something that can never be competed with by the westerners! my childhood classmates grew up with the likes of walt disney and the simpsons, while animes and mangas were just the interests of a few ones. today though japan culture has totally spread worldwide and even among africans who reside in africa it's common to hear about naruto, dragon ball, pokemon, one piece and i think the most famous of all sailor moon.

however the westerners are doing what they know how to do best. my grandchildren will definitely hear of the simpsons, family guy, american dad, odd fairy grandparents, walt disney xters, etc.

which one do you prefer?

I grew up with Western which resulted in a vast array of vocal ranges and sappy love endings(Le sigh).
From Disney to Fred Quimby to Ninja Turtles to Voltron and then...
.
.
I got bloodthirsty.
Anime/Manga (Japanese/Korean) rocks my socks.

I'm more of the western Animation. I grew up with those.
Don't like Anime. And i've not watch most of what most people watch. . .
The only anime that i enjoyed was Samurai X (The movie was even better) and Gungrave. Everything else is bleh to me. I can put up with a little anime incorporated into western animation. . .say Totally Spies or Teen Titans but that's about much i can handle. I can manage a little japanese style like 'The Batman', Blade, Thundercats 2011. You can see the influence there but it's not overt like those pokemon thingies with their exaggerated expressions as if humans aren't already exasperatingly exaggerated. Why would i want my toons that way? However i enjoy the video games more. The only thing if done in pure anime that i would watch is 'Batman'. Okay and Xmen. I tried Iron Man and Wolverine. Not working well for me.
Re: Japanese Animation (anime) Vs Western Animation by Nobody: 6:10pm On Jul 05, 2012
Totally spies was nice. i loved their fashion sense.

and i also think those exasperatingly exaggerated expressions make the japanese animation absurd and unique. my favourite anime of all time has to be the craziest and most paradoxal anime ever. it was an explosion of the impossible made possible.
Re: Japanese Animation (anime) Vs Western Animation by AVmonster: 10:42am On Jul 07, 2012
What about anime like Avatar:The last Airbender...
Re: Japanese Animation (anime) Vs Western Animation by Nobody: 5:33pm On Jul 07, 2012
I think i've come across it a few times but i wasn't impressed enough to become curious about it. what other animes do you watch?
Re: Japanese Animation (anime) Vs Western Animation by firestar(f): 9:04pm On Jul 07, 2012
Anime:
Totoro
Sailor moon
Full Metal Panic
Pokemon
Samurai X
Ninja Scroll
Boondocks
Naruto
Avatar: Last Airbender
Beyblade
Bleach
Claymore
etc...
Re: Japanese Animation (anime) Vs Western Animation by vescucci(m): 10:35am On Jul 08, 2012
I'm not sure Avatar is anime, strictly speaking. I'm not sure the differentiation Western animation and Japanese animation is accurate either since Japanese are involved in almost any kinda animation these days, but I suppose I get the idea.

Naturally anime have the better shows but not on an average because for every inspired anime, you have like 89 totally rubbish one, which is not the case for 'western animation'. The greatest awesome thing about anime (the good ones) is that it's not really for any particular age group. You can enjoy it at any age. Some of my favourite anime are:

Rurouni Kenshin
Death Note
Dragonaut (not because of all the jugs but they are a factor)
Cowboy Bebop
Naruto, naturally.

Full Metal Alchemist gets a honorable mention.

BTW, if you haven't seen the films, Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke, you haven't seen what anime is capable of!

Hehehe i sometimes dress like Alex, maybe with a smidgen of Sam in there. I loved their fashion sense too. I think that's the most appealing part of anime to me. The weird/outrageous fashion.

michelin89: the most famous of all sailor moon.

I don't think so.

@ topic

Anime >>>>>>>>>>>>> Western animation

But I still have a soft spot for some of the old classic western cartoons like droopy, donald duck, goofy, wily coyote, Tom and Jerry, atom ant, pink panther, snagglepuss, yogi bear, the flintstones, the jetsons, secret squirrel, foghorn leghorn, etc. I can watch those over again any day.
Re: Japanese Animation (anime) Vs Western Animation by Nobody: 12:37pm On Jul 12, 2012
Sailor moon is a classic. how many people will remember naruto, one piece, beyblade, yugi oh!, etc years from now?

can you imagine how many animes are inspired to it? i personally don't like it. it's stupid and sexist but i can't deny it being a milestone in the history of animes.
Re: Japanese Animation (anime) Vs Western Animation by Feraz(m): 4:48pm On Jul 12, 2012
......I'm not really picky when it comes to cartoons since I love them all(with exceptions of cow and chicken - I mean who gives birth to two animals and is proud with some others) but one thing I know for sure that turns people off when it comes to Japanese animation is the language (people aren't ready to start reading the subtitles).......took me quite sometime before I could convince my friends that Japanese animations are quite as good as their western counterpart............
michelin89: Do you watch them online? can we have the links to these sites? thanks!
If talking of animes, then I can provide you with link to downloading them......www.realitylapse.com..........

Re: Japanese Animation (anime) Vs Western Animation by Nobody: 11:47am On Jul 16, 2012
I think I prefer the anime. Maybe the exotic language(turn off for some people) and sleek ACTIONS. I watched a lot of superman, justice leagues and all those hero cartoons but they just don't do it for me anymore.
But, animations like toy story, monster inc(any pixar film), final fantasy(isn't that anime??) still interest me.

This days, any cartoon network just bore me the hell out. Even anime looking samurai Jack and that robot one(megas XLR or something) that I was crazy about is just there.

Anime all the way.

Re: Japanese Animation (anime) Vs Western Animation by PhysicsQED(m): 6:42am On Jul 30, 2012
Hey michelin89, I just remembered this thread. A good/useful site to watch anime online is kuroanime dot com which used to be known as onlygoodanime dot com.

I think Dragon Ball Z and Gundam Wing had more impact and influence in the West than Sailor Moon. Then probably after these three would be the film Akira and then Cowboy Bebop, Naruto and Bleach. Within Japan itself, really old "classic" anime like Astro Boy are considered the most important and influential.

Good grief! What planet are you from?

@topic, when it comes to animations humour is a very important consideration for me. I can't stand cartoons that are all serious-like with only little comedy.
American cartoon humor is different from Japanese humor. Japanese humor is usually derived by poking fun at the characters' quirks and behavioural flaws while American humor deals
with (but is not restricted to) over-the-top, ridiculous situations or funny sarcasm. smiley
I think I like both. Don't want to choose.

What do you mean?

You never watched ANY of those cartoons you highlighted in bold? They showed reruns of them all the time in the 90s in the West, but I also remember watching many episodes of some of these cartoons on VHS as a kid in Nigeria and the VHS tapes are still in my family's house in Nigeria today. So I know these cartoons can't ALL have been unheard of in Nigeria (if they were unheard of at all).

I have watched almost all of them, I do know about them. I only exclaimed cos they are all seriously old school, with the exception of Tom and Jerry that is a bit modern.

Oh, ok. Yeah they're all old, but I watched them all in the 90s and a few in the early 2000s as reruns on Cartoon network, Boomerang, etc.

Old school? I beg to differ, I still set a reminder anytime Boomerang shows any Warner bros cartoon. I'd love to watch inch-eye private eye again too, though I've probably seen every episode of it and Top Cat. The Thirteen Ghosts of Scooby doo, Jabberjaw, He-Man, Sherlock Holmes dog, Wacky Races, animaniacs and the original rough drawn Dexter's lab (1995-1999). These were perfect pioneers, their comedy original and personalities of the characters spectacular. Top Cat was the suave conman, Dexter the petulant and naïve genius with a serious superiority complex. Now we have Ed, Edd and Eddy and I can't name another one cos I don't know them.

But honorary mentions go out to Wild Cats, Ultra Force, Sky Commanders, Biker Mice, Sky Dancers (bleh), Johnny Quest, Gunther, Swat Cats and Transformers, shows that didn't become classics but will always have a cult followership.

Punchline - Animes all the way

I forgot about Top Cat. I watched that too. Top Cat was cool as hell. Swat Cats, Dexter's Lab and Animaniacs were also great. Also, Pinky and the Brain and Freakazoid were pretty entertaining as well.

For me, it is anime all the way.

I first started with western cartoons but once i got introduced to japanese anime by my cousins in the mid 90s, shiii. . . . . it's been a marriage since then. First started with Fist of The North Star, then Samurai Showdown and then saw Ninja Scroll

The storylines seemed more complex, action was more engaging and the art style was more appealing. I still saw my western toons, only they were gradually being replaced by anime.

I did see Thundersub, G Force, Voltron before the aforementioned anime, but for sme odd reason, i didn't see them as anime, maybe because of the English voice overs or being aired alongside many Western toons on NTA back in the day
