Valerie Marie Topete, 36, faces child abuse charges after she admitted to police that she poured beer into her child's sippy cup, police said.

Here's what happened, according to the Phoenix Police Department:

Authorities were called to a pizza restaurant in Phoenix on Tuesday night after witnesses reported seeing Topete pour beer into her son's sippy cup. Witnesses said the child drank from the cup and also was left alone at the table with the sippy cup.

"Officers interviewed the suspect who made admissions to pouring the beer in the cup because the child 'kept reaching' for the beer pitcher," according to a statement released by Phoenix police. "The mother initially told officers the child did not drink from the cup, but later indicated the child may have drunk from some of the contents."

The child was transported to a local hospital as a precaution, and later released into his father's care.
