"Papa" from French 'dad', "mama" from English, imitation of baby talk. Igbo also has mpa for dad, and mma for mother. Mpa mpa for grandfather, mma mma for grandmother. |

Yeah, papa is from Latin via French, mama is almost universal, many languages have the syllable 'ma' in their word for mother. |

I realize that almost all cultures use "papa" and "baba" to refer to their parents. Yorubas use "Baba" though. |
