We're ranked 156 out of 177 nations in UN Human Development Index (HDI) Ranking. Life expectancy is very closely linked to the wealth of a nation. Its perhaps the best indicator of how well a nation is faring compared to others. Wealthy nations occupy the top in HDI ranking and poorer ones are anchored at the very bottom. Now you see why I keep haring on about this.

Countries like India & Malaysia have now left us behind in development. I'm not painting a negative picture just stating the facts. The only reason for our abysmal performance is CORRUPTION. The World Bank has estimated that as a result of corruption 80% of energy revenues benefit only 1% of the population That truly is mind boggling. Every Nigerian knows this, but the only question is how do we extricate our destiny (and destinies of our children) from these blood sucking political elites

We can trade banters about whether India or Malaysia is better than us or not, it doesn't matter. The truth is Nigeria, a very rich nation is fast becoming a cash cow for other nations to prosper while most of our people continue to eke out a living simply for survival. This is the heart wrenching paradox of our nation.

^^You're the one deceiving yourself with your pathetic and ignorant mindset. Fact is nations can and do STILL make progress under circumstances of corruption. In terms of that corruption sef, Nigeria ranks below 48 other countries, with even countries like Russia, Ukraine and Ivory Coast voted worse according to Transparency International's latest corruption index. I recall when Nigeria occupied No 2 on that Index in the days of Abacha, so even corruption is on the decline in Nigeria.

Interesting report you posted. Look at the top 15 and compare them to top 15 in the HDI index. Ditto bottom 15. You'll observe similarities in the ranking. So countries where corruption is very entrenched will perpetually remain at the bottom of the development index

Corruption declining compared to Abacha's time? really? With folks in Abuja carting away Ghana must go every day; with trillions of Naira siphoned away in oil subsidy scam; with legislooters awarding themselves reprehensible allowances; with GEJ getting N1 billion as feeding allowance... need I go on?

You can dramatize events all you like, it makes no difference. Unlike you, Transparency International do actual research into international corruption, and follow the money trail using huge investigative resources. During Babangida and Abacha's time just one phone call to the CBN by the dictator saw billions of dollars evacuated to foreign accounts in an instant without even the merest whiff of public knowledge.

Today if 1 billion goes missing it's all over the news, with national assembly debating it, EFCC demanding details etc etc. All that exposure constitutes a real check on executive corruption, both at national and state levels, and severely limits the amount of money that can be siphoned, in relation to the public purse. Go to the states. Accountability has increased. A state governor cannot just steal all the money and return himself to power after rigging. That's over. The people no longer accept that. If you tour the states, you will see REAL development taking place - roads, bridges, flyovers in places you'll never expect, schools, water projects, IPP projects, hospitals etc. UNLIKE 15 or 20 years ago when everything was in a state of utter neglect.

MORE money is going into the provision of basic services. That's just a fact, and those who wish to dispute this are welcome to return to the days of Abacha and IBB. If you expect corruption to vanish overnight, KEEP DREAMING. The best we can realistically hope for is that it is reduced to a state whereby we can see some development taking place despite its occurrence, and we are at that state now. Go to Lagos state, Edo State, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Kwara, Kaduna State, Imo, Rivers, Enugu states etc. These places are seeing real infrastructural development unless you're blind. You couldn't name even one progresssive state in the days of Abacha or IBB.

The fact is, a lot of Nigerians especially the ones in diaspora do not believe in the growth of the country. Nevertheless when you say "Nigeria is the most corrupt country in the world" or that "Nigeria has the most malnourished children" they jump and say " yes that is true!!", I find that utterly irritating and despicable. Yes, it's a fact Nigeria grew at a rate of about 7.8 percent and from Ngozi Okonjo Iweala's statement, She with the help of the FG aim to reach double- digits of growth in the oncoming years. Nigerians should understand the Rome wasn't built in a day, these things take time. We have seen a huge growth since after Abacha's regime. Corruption is a curse Nigeria is plagued with but this does not prevent growth in the country. I still see Nigeria as the Giant of Africa and no one can argue the fact that Nigeria is amongst the backbones that hold up Africa.

^^^Well stated. I have a friend that was jobless a couple of years ago. He started a tiling business in Enugu. He learnt the business online. He started with about 50,000 naira or less. Today this dude is building a massive duplex in town. All he does is carry around samples of his work on a brochure, visiting upscale joints in town and showing the designs to all the big boys who frequent the joints. From there, business. Finish.

The reason this sort of thing can work today is that there has been a huge increase in the middle class population in recent years, so if you can provide any service that can make their lives more enjoyable, you're in.

Very logical point. However the figures are not fictitious,if you take into account how GDP (depending on formula in use)is calculated, Nigeria is actually roaring ahead and is primed to be the major economy in Africa in under a decade. However this does not necessarily translate to a better life for the common man.

Say if Country X implements more efficient tax collection avenues on businesses and individuals, has big telecommunications companies setting up with the heavy license fees, has reprieve for international debts, and is one of the world's top oil producers,on paper it starts to look rather buoyant.

However if Country X then fails to invest in infrastructure, security, and policies that aid social mobility,it may have all the revenues reserves in the world but it's people will still suffer!
