First In The News is the BIG RUMOUR of The Week: I’m sure you heard the news that Prophet T.B Joshua predicted the death of 2go and Facebook users. Well, the church is denying he made any such statement! And on that note, it was just a rumour and should be discarded. AND NOW, THE MAIN NEWS HEADLINES: 1. Nigeria’s number one internet blogger, Linda Ikeji has been nominated for 2012 FUTURE Award alongside ace musicians, Banky W. D’banj, P-square and other entrepreneurs. They were nominated in the “Young Person of the Year” category. The award is billed to hold in August and to be anchored by AMBO Box office winner, O.C Ukeji. The award is aimed at celebrating outstanding young people in different sectors. 2. During the week, Lagos State governor Babatunde Fashola 'arrested' (more like confronted) two senior military officers who drove on the BRT lane at the Outer Marina in Lagos. The Governor was around the area when he spotted the military car driving on the Bus Rapid Transit lane which is meant strictly for the BRT buses, and came down from his own car to confront the men. 3. Also in the week, Veterinary Council of Nigeria, VCN, threatened to sanction three federal universities running non-accredited veterinary medicine programmes. The affected institutions are the University of Agriculture Umudike; University of Abuja and the University of Ilorin. President of VCN, Professor Gabriel Ogundipe, gave the warning at the 103rd regular meeting of the council in Abuja. He said the regulatory body will stop universities, which lacked the required facilities, from running the course. 4. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA in Kogi, has destroyed over 30 hectares of Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp) plantation, valued at about N12million at a plantation located in a thick forest about 70 kilometres from Ife-Olukotun, Yagba East local government of Kogi State. 5. Nigeria’s House of Representative is advocating for more senatorial and federal constituencies to adequately safeguard the interest of the people socially, politically and economically due to the rising population in the country. 5. LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS: Nigeria’s naira firmed against the U.S dollar on the interbank market on Monday, supported by ample dollar sales by two energy companies to some lenders. Naira closed at 161.60 against the dollar on the interbank market, stronger than the 162.10 to the dollar it closed at on Friday last week. 6. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS NEWS: Samsung Electronics Co has bought chipmaker CSR Plc's mobile phone connectivity and location technology for $310 million in a deal that strengthens the South Korean company's smartphone platform and patent portfolio. 7. LOCAL SPORTS NEWS: The Nigerian Premier League has been ranked as the strongest African league for 2012 and 24th in the world. The classification was done by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics who assessed the performances of the clubs from January 1 to July 10 2012. 8. WORLD NEWS/EDUCATION: An Ukrainian Team, quadSquad took the top position, taking home US$25,000 price after a keenly contested competition in the software design category which was the top in the series of awards at the just concluded 10th annual Imagine Cup, the world’s premier student technology competition, held in Sydney, Australia, organizers of the competition, Microsoft, has urged the students to be their own boss after their graduation 9. WORLD NEWS/POLITICS: Results from Libya's first elections after the overthrow of Col Gaddafi show gains for an alliance led by former interim PM Mahmoud Jibril. 10. Nigerian born “dami duro crooner”, David Adeleke a.k.a Davido is set to release his debut album – O.B.O (Omo Baba Olowo) Genesis today, Wednesday 18 July 2012 and his album launch concert in association with Flytime entertainment is to hold on Sunday 22 July at Eko Hotel Expo Hall, Lagos. 12. Nigerian beauty queen and ex-model, Nina David now a musician has released into the market a brand new song entitled “Player”. She is from Nnewe in Anambra State, she contested for 2007 Miss World Model in China.
