OUYA is a new very super cheap android video gaming console, boasting to beat Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo with a delivered Android super clear gaming experience.

The project has captured the imagination of gamers and tech fans who have pumped over $5 million into the project, and it still has 21 days to go.

The funding smashed through OUYA’s initial target of $950,000 before the end of its first day.

The OUYA team makes many promises on the Kickstarter project page – the biggest being that it can deliver a game console for just $99.

It claims that at the heart of the console will be a Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM, along with 8GB of internal storage. Connectivity options include WiFi, Bluetooth and USB 2.0.

Based on Android 4.0, the OUYA is being touted as a developer’s dream, and an antidote to the expensive closed systems of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. Each unit will come with an SDK for users to start making their own games, and all games will be free to try before you buy.

Designs on the console

The company is working with designer Yves Behar and his fuseproject team to design the console and its controllers which feature dual analogue sticks, a D-Pad, buttons and even a touchpad.

The open nature of the means that its functionality isn’t just limited to gaming, so we could also see it become a capable Smart TV add-on, for instance.

According to the project page, the prototype is “up and running”. It remains to be seen whether the team can really deliver on its $99 console promise. Even with $5 million in the bank it’s unlikely to be easy.

Do you think this $99 Android gaming console would work magic and make huge bucks while delivering a sound and interesting gaming perspective to tackle other big games in the gaming world??

Also checkout this amazing screenshot of the prototype controller, though I don't like the fact that all buttons are O.

New gaming inovations. Nice work. Well I'm not sure, but I am for the fact that this will definetely make for a tougher competition in the gaming buisness.

The Ouya first has to have decent titles to be considered a competition. Big and decent titles are usually produced by big studio houses something the Ouya shuns since its games are going to be for free. It is really betting on independent developers for its success. Might work or flop(this word again cheesy )but all this remains to be seen.

grin grin grin

You're right though, without big titles/"dedicated" first party studios, it's hard to see it directly "competing" with the 360/PS3 let alone the next gen consoles.

This isn't iOS or a mobile platform where some indie dev can pull an Angry Birds-esque success, the console market is dominated by the massive studios because the best console games are produced on massive budgets.

But hey, it's "open source" and cheap as chips so I'm still backing it for some success.

Also don't think all the games would be free, devs are required to provide a free playable demo for all titles but the complete versions won't be. Though don't expect them to go for $60 either cheesy

Thats so true, if it doesn't have some nice titles like Resident Evil, Grand Theft and co, I personally might not consider buying it... especially when it bursts out with all this crappy "Mario adventures" grin grin

And so far it's played out well

OUYA should be out in market January next year 2013 - and would sell as low as $99 for the console and a controller (pad),,, while two controllers would cost $130 or there-about, checkout poster's signature for more info.
