It’s not as bad. About housing you can buy an old house of say 10 to 20years old for a decent amount. . There are ways around everything you mentioned. You can goto farmers market or buy things when on sales. How about buying no name brands from super store or great value from Walmart, my dear thank God you are here. The best thing is you can travel to over 180 countries visa free if you finally have a Canadian passport.
amigo1088:
And here's why :

What are the keystones of a happy society?

Easy access to housing, easy access to free healthcare, easy access to good education, easy access to quality food.

Housing here is BRUTAL. Try to buy a house for less than 350k that isn't a piece of shit. You can't. Or you can and it's so far in the middle of nowhere that the cost of getting to and from anywhere negate any savings you've made in your purchase.

Easy access to free healthcare; ever had to go to an emergency room here? My friend's son broke his thumb a couple years ago (at 5 years old). Did we get seen? Sure. After 7.5 HOURS of waiting. The wife lost a day of work to go. Ever try to get a family doctor? I know people who've been on waiting lists for 4+ years.

Good education: up to and through high school, sure. But what does that qualify you for? Approximately nothing. You can flip burgers at McDonald's after that if you want. Want to go to Uni? Be prepared to carry debt for 5+ (often 10+) years after school

Good food? Good luck. Fruits and veggies are meh at best and cost a fortune. A head of iceberg lettuce is $6 where I am right now. Red peppers at $4.99/lb Steak? $39-49/kilo for any cut that isn't shit. Dairy sucks (Europeans that drank milk or have eaten butter here know what I'm talking about). Restaurants are prohibitively expensive for anywhere that isn't just reheating industrial garbage.

Also, Canadians aren't nice. They're polite. There's a difference. They'll say sorry if you bump into them but politeness will overshadow honesty. You ask a Canadian if they wanna hang out sometime, if they do want to, the Canadian will say"Yeah, totally, we should " and then tell people you suck once you're not around.

It's cold here. And spring takes FOREVER to be done with. And then summer is too hot. And the mosquitoes, don't even get me started...

I think that's it for now. Canada ain't the worst, but FAR from the best.

Well there is no where that is all rosy. From experience I noticed most Nigerians want to show off and keep up with the Joneses and end up piercing themselves here with a lot of sorrow. The average Nigerian does not want to start small. What I have consciously avoided is trying to impress anyone here.
Don't buy a car yet take the bus. If you must buy a car a well maintained used car and solely to goto work. I have noticed we want to buy the latest 2023 car with big tires so we can show people we have arrived and we end up paying for that car every bi weekly from our small paycheck.
Do NOT rent a big house. You can rent a shared apartment and save your money. Time will come when you can even buy an acreage. If it is to marry. Look and settle with a woman that is going forward and will help you go further and not backward. Get a lady who is not cosmetic and is also on the same page of delayed gratification with you. These are a few ways you can have more money to spend and live well especially in the Canada that I know.

I think all the Nigerian fighters. Boxing ,ufc etc don’t know how to take hits. They enjoy punching but weaken once they are replied. There must be some kind of endurance training to be able to handle some hard hits and not collapse on every single hit. ISREAL, Kamoru, AJ all have the same thing in common.

Many reasons. First is the oyibo people have generational wealth passed down to them in form of real estates, wills, insurances from their parents and ancestry . Etc. most blacks basically are the first from their lineage coming to these countries hence they struggle with the initial settling in. In addition to the fact that they have people dependent on them from back home. If you see them, help them because they are all under incredible stress.

School fees in my time in UNIBEN used to be 9,700. What is going on in Nigeria. We all need to sue the government if you schooled in Naija. You come out from secondary school smart and ready to take on the world. Then you go to university in Nigeria and come out confused, lost and wandering where all the zest went to. Any one that has the funds should go school abroad Jare.

Of what good is APC, PDP when the people are in pain and anguish. Comparing now and the years from Obasanjo time is dumb. Times are changing hence the constitution. I am neither PDP or APC, I am a Citizen and demand that if changing the constitution will lead to better living situation then so be it. We cannot be afraid of traveling and being kidnapped. It is the worst time to live in Nigeria. It has never being this bad. Note that it has always being bad but right now it is clearly unbearable. If you have been kidnapped or cut with a machete or shot at you will understand that being partisan is the least of your worries.

The question I always ask people is. When your time is up here and you close your eyes in death. Then you realize the hell and heaven talk was real. What will you do at that point?

Why not leave your life right now that you still can? Instead of arguing whether or not it is real.

I personally don't think your chapter is closed when you die.

Science/Technology / Re: Why Do Countries Have Different Time Zones? by hinograce: 4:38pm On Dec 27, 2020
ReubenE:

You're very smart. Sunlight obviously does not determine time zones.

Time is calculated using longitude and latitude i.e the position or location of a country from the Prime Meridian or Greenwich Meridian/time.

The Greenwich Meridian is an imaginary line that runs vertically through the globe.
It is calculated as GMT 0°

All the countries to the East of the Prime Meridian gain time (+) while the countries to the West of the Prime Meridian lose time (-)

Using Nigeria as an example: the location of Nigeria in the globe is Longitude 3°E - 15°E of the Prime Meridian, and Latitude 4°N - 14°N of the equator.

Longitude 15° =1hr

Our local time here is 1hr ahead of GMT.
This is because Nigeria is located to the East of the Prime Meridian, so Nigeria adopted Longitude 15° or GMT +1 as her standard time.

Accra, Ghana
London, England etc are few of the countries where the Prime Meridian passes through, so their own standard time is GMT 0 or longitude 0°

When the Local Time in London and Accra is 1pm, the local time here in Nigeria would be 2pm.

While countries like US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil Jamaica etc will be hours behind of GMT cause they are located to the West of Prime Meridian, countries like UAE, Japan, New Zealand, China, India etc are hours ahead of GMT cause they are located to the East.

N.B There are sometimes multiple time zones in some countries due to their size e.g US, Russia.

P. S.
Time zones are largely adopted by individual countries so it can change from what we know now about our local time if Nigeria decides to change the status quo.

Secondly, sorry for the areas I could not give detailed information due to numbers. I can't possibly write the calculations with my phone

thanks. This has certainly answered my questions and I am more knowledgeable now. Thanks

Education / Re: UNIBEN Made Me Doubt My Intelligence by hinograce: 4:40am On Sep 01, 2020
I totally get it. I finished from UNIBEN too. When you get in, you come in very smart and with high confidence about yourself and the future but when you are leaving, you leave less intelligent than you came in, and confused. As a matter of fact every graduate from Nigerian universities need to sue the country for wasted years of your life that can't be gotten back.

It still beats my imagination that lecturers feel proud and excited when students fail thier courses, it's a thing of joy when there is mass failure. People have suffered in universities. No one to cry to because people will say but you are not the only one, and that people are graduating with good grades. Well my advice is once you are done with University in Nigeria, if you still have any form of confidence left and some money please go and do a diploma overseas and you will quickly realise that you are smarter than they made you think you are.

Nice boss. Are you in Edmonton?
salford:

Only DUI offences would appear in background checks. However, employers often requests for driver's abstract. They could decide to hire or not hire based on your driver's abstract.

Check picture below. These are examples of 3 jobs recently advertised in Edmonton. All are requesting for driver's abstract.

note: Einstein case would not show up on a driver's abstract since it was a red light photo. Over speeding photo do not show on abstract too, but if you were handed a ticket by an officer, then it would show up.

@einsteino Does this info go into your profile? Can a potential employer who does a background check see this traffic offence?

Just curious.
einsteino:
For those preparing for life in Canada, a part of the experience of driving in Canada is trying as much as possible to avoid tickets. There are a variety of them, and they could put you a couple dollars out when you least expect. They serve as deterrent and help safe guard our roads. However we try, some of us would find ourselves on the other side of the Highway traffic law. Last year, I returned home from work to meet a brown enveloped mail. It was likely from the government. I was excited and thought they were about to finally pay me my GST. However, as I opened the mail, it hit me that I screwed up. The letter read that I beat a redlight 2 weeks before and thus fined $325 for it. It's not that I didn't remember but since no one saw me when it occurred, I thought I got away. Anyways, If I didn't remember, the letter went out of it's way to help me recollect. The letter had a picture of my car and it's license plate, details of the location and time I crossed the red-light, how long the light had been red, what speed my vehicle was at before and after crossing the red-light. Basically, they had all the facts and it was difficult, if not impossible to argue that my vehicle didn't violate the extant highway traffic law.

At first, I was under the impression that I just had to part with the money I was fined. Thankfully, I found out from the letter that I could contest it in court or apply for what is known as Early Resolution. With the first option, I have to present to a Judge(Justice of Peace) the factors that mandated me to cross the light or mitigated my stopping. For example, maybe an emergency vehicle had it's siren on and the only way to make way for it was to go through the red-light. In my case, I had no excuse really... There was a lot on my mind that day, so I just didn't see the traffic light early enough. Although I hit my brakes and reversed just after I had crossed the lights, it doesn't matter because I was already in violation. So, I took the Early Resolution option.

With the early resolution option, if you live far away from the jurisdiction where the violation occurred, they let you meet by phone. This convenience was much appreciated since I was moving out of the city of London. So, I went to the court house at Dundas Street, and explained to a court staff that I would not be able to attend the resolution in person. They scheduled me for a resolution by phone and sent a letter for the new date.

Today being the scheduled date, I called 5 minutes before the scheduled time. A secretary answered the phone, she asked who I was, and then offered me two options: 1) accept a guilty plea for a reduced fine of $240 or 2) contest the charge via a Trial. Like I mentioned earlier, the way I saw it, I stood no chance if I contested the charge. The facts against me were technically correct and I was guilty as charged. So, I accepted the plea-bargain offer. At this point, the secretary informed me that I was accepting to forfeit my rights to a Trial, I confirmed. She then transfers me to a Judge and Clerk. The secretary reads my charge and informs the Judge that we had reached a plea bargain agreement. The Judge basically asks if I plead guilty to the charge and how long I would like to be given to pay the fine. I requested for 4 months. Your Worship approved my request, then says I would get a letter in the mail with instructions on how to pay the new fine.

As can be seen from the above, the process was simple and didn't take up to 10 minutes. I didn't hire any legal services, but it saved me about $85 and has given me all the time I need to raise the money. So, if you ever find yourself in violation of a red-light camera ticket, I suggest you at least try an Early Resolution. The only issue there maybe is that it may conflict with your work hours and maybe for some of you, the money saved would not be worth the opportunity cost.

Another point to note is that however you plead, there is no demerit points to your driving record(the secretary would inform you of this) and it doesn't impact your car's insurance premium. This is because the charge is against the owner of the vehicle rather than the driver. This is different from when a police officer pulls you over for violating a red-light. In the case that it is a police officer that issued you the ticket, the fine is much lower than that of a red-light camera's. However, you'd get demerit points if you plead or are found guilty. As you may know, the problem with a police ticket is that your insurance premium would spike. Depending on where you live, you would spend an extra $1000 to $2000 in insurance premium over the next 3 years for this.
