Politics / Bribery Allegation Against Nigeria Won’t Clear Your Name, FG Tells Binance by LifestyleTonite: 1:51pm On May 08
The Federal Government of Nigeria has faulted the claim by Binance CEO, Richard Teng, that some government officials demanded $150m in cryptocurrency payments to resolve the ongoing criminal investigation against the company.

The Federal Government described the claim published by many international media organisations as “an apparent well-coordinated public relations effort” by Binance to “launder its impaired image as an organisation that does not play by the rules and laws guiding business conduct in sovereign nations”.

In a statement signed by the Special Assistant to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Rabiu Ibrahim, the Federal Government advised the company against resorting to fictional claims and mudslinging media campaigns because such won’t clear its name.

The statement read in part, “This claim by Binance CEO lacks any iota of substance. It is nothing but a diversionary tactic and an attempted act of blackmail by a company desperate to obfuscate the grievous criminal charges it is facing in Nigeria.

“The facts of this matter remain that Binance is being investigated in Nigeria for allowing its platform to be used for money laundering, terrorism financing, and foreign exchange manipulation through illegal trading.

“While this lawful investigation was going on, an executive of Binance, who was in court-sanctioned protective custody, escaped from Nigeria, and he is now a fugitive from the law. Working with the security agencies in Nigeria, Interpol is currently executing an international arrest warrant on the said fugitive.

“The phantom bribe claim is part of an orchestrated international campaign by this company that is facing criminal prosecution in many countries including the United States, to undermine the Nigerian government.

“Just a week ago, the founder and former CEO of Binance, Changpeng Zhao, was sentenced to prison in the United States, after pleading guilty to charges very similar to what Binance is being investigated for in Nigeria. In addition, Zhao agreed to pay a fine of $50 million, while Binance is liable for $4.3 billion in fines and forfeitures to the US Government.

“We would like to remind Binance that it will not clear its name in Nigeria by resorting to fictional claims and mudslinging media campaigns. The only way to resolve its issues will be by submitting itself to unobstructed investigation and judicial due process.

“The government of Nigeria will continue to act within its laws and international norms and will not succumb to any form of blackmail from any entity, local or foreign.”

Politics / Cybersecurity Levy Is Additional Burden On Nigerians, Says LCCI by LifestyleTonite: 1:19pm On May 08
The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has said the directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to banks to implement section 44 of the cybersecurity levy on Nigerians will create a burden.

According to the LCCI, this is because the levy is in addition to unsettled performance crises with power supply after the recently reviewed electricity tariffs.

The LCCI lamented that the upward review of the electricity tariff has not brought about a commensurate boost in power supply to justify the additional costs to individuals and businesses.

This was contained in a statement signed by Chinyere Almona, FCA Director-General Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

The statement read in part, “We urge the government to reconsider the implementation of this directive as its timing is wrong, and the justification is unclear. This directive should be withdrawn while we call for more consultations with critical stakeholders.

“At a time when government revenues are at record levels from higher crude prices, higher revenues accrued to the Federal Allocation Account, and saved resources from the stoppage of subsidies, we expect to see projects created to enhance the living standard of the people as a dividend of democracy for the sacrifices made by Nigerians. In the face of biting inflation that has continued to weaken the purchasing power of consumers and with companies burdened with a rising cost of production, any further imposition of additional cost burden will slow down economic activities and drag our economic growth drive.

“We believe that since the collection of this levy cannot guarantee the protection of payers from cyber-attacks, it is difficult to justify its collection at this time. In the same vein, the collection approach with some exemptions can create confusion regarding what transactions really qualify for the exemptions. Implementing this directive can gradually encourage some people to return to holding cash to avoid paying the levy. This can negatively impact the achievement already recorded with the cashless policy.

“As we advance, we urge the government to work towards amending the enabling law to reflect current realities, initiate programmes that reflate the economy, and invest more in digital infrastructure to support business operations. The directive that the remittance of this levy should go to the Office of National Security Adviser suggests that the funds may not be used to enhance our cybersecurity architecture to guarantee cyber-safety for technology users in Nigeria. We also urge the government to harmonize its tax initiatives with the work done by the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Reforms to prevent multiple taxations and poor coordination of the expected new tax regime.”

Politics / Hardship: NEMA Distributes Palliatives In Abia (PHOTOS) by LifestyleTonite: 6:32pm On May 03
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has officially handed the assorted food commodities given to Nigerians by the Federal Government to cushion the effect of high cost of food items in the country to the Abia State government.

The handing-over ceremony occurred on Friday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

The Director General of NEMA Zubaida Umar, in her speech read by the Director Relief and Rehabilitation, Adamu Usur, appreciated the government of President Bola Tinubu for releasing these foods from the National Strategic Reserve to ameliorate the sufferings of people due to the high cost of food in the country. She appealed to the stakeholders involved in the food distribution to ensure that the modalities for distribution are adhered to.

The Abia State government represented by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Caleb Ajagba, welcomed the NEMA team and thanked the government of President Tinubu for the worthwhile initiative. He assured that the items will be judiciously distributed irrespective of religious, political or social affiliations. He immediately asked the Chairman State Operating Committee on Grain Intervention in the state, Eric Egwuibe, to oversee the the distribution exercise.

Politics / Re: Economic Situation:Stop Fanning Embers Of Ethnic War , Fadojoe Tells Igbos by LifestyleTonite: 10:16am On Feb 24
It's sad seeing how Igbos reason. Fadojoe is not saying Igbos should join protest, but Igbos on this thread have misconstrued him. He's simply calling for an end to the way they are blatantly mocking Yoruba people on social media. That single action will cost them tomorrow, and when it happens, they will say "they hate us".

How do you think the Yorubas that voted Obi against their tribesman are feeling seeing Igbos ridiculing their tribe everyday on social media? Do you think the gaslighting that worked for Obi in 2023 will fool them again?

What amuses me is how Igbos are trying hard to make people feel they are not feeling the heat of the economy. The people whose land produces agricultural products are crying of hunger, the ones with ports are crying of hunger, the ones with oil are doing the same, yet the ones who are landlocked and not known for agriculture are acting as of their bellies are filled. Who is fooling who? Right now, the South West leaders are doing what they can to help the Yorubas, and soon the issue will be stabilized. When the Igbos supposed to hold their leaders for the same, they are busy portraying themselves as okay and above sucy needs. Well, that leaves their governors with the opportunity to loot whatever the FG gives as palliatives. Tomorrow, they will turn around and cry marginalization.

The sad part is that when things start to normalize and become better, the same people will be filled with sadness and bitterness. That's to show that they never meant well for Nigeria.

He wrote on social media,

All the structures were fully built on the setbacks and alignment which is clearly an alteration of the Drainage Master Plan along the area.

No wonder Obi came third in the last election. He lacks sense and doesn't know when not to talk.

When Soludo and Otti were demolishing houses in Anambra and Abia,. respectively, this LP third-placed candidate kept quiet. Dude now found his voice because it concerns the Lagos they have coveteousness for.

How can you say the timing of the demolition is wrong, all in the name of hardship in the land? When hasn't there ever been hardship on Nigeria and in the world? So, because of hardship, illegalities should be permitted? Armed robbery should also be legalized because of hardship, according to Obi with 419 sense.

He even insinuated that Government ought to not have carried out the demolition now, meaning it should have been postponed. This is another reason why he's not fit to rule Nigeria. So, he means government should continue to permit flooding caused by illegal structures encroaching on waterways in Lagos. Doesn't he know that while the canal's route is blocked, its water gets diverted to other communities which gets flooded. This leads to stagnation of water that causes malaria mosquitoes, typhoid, loss of property and dirty environment. These happen while the illegal criminals enjoy their mansions sited on illegal land. Sadly, when there's a flood, the descendants of those so-called mansion owners will mock Lagos.

What Peter Obi wants is a postponement of doomsday. This was the same way he supported Naira Scarcity. Now he's supporting illegality, yet hopes to lead Nigeria someday.

Below is a photo shared by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, showing buildings built to block a canal's passage. During raining season, where do the owners of those buildings expect water to pass through? Definitely, the water will find a channel that will lead it to where irs not supposed to go to, there y causing flooding in other communities. Obi wants such buildings to remain standing, whereas he demolished such buildings when he as the Governor of Anambra State.

He's a clown

Politics / Obi Faults Demolition Of Houses, Says Timing Wrong by LifestyleTonite: 10:55am On Nov 30, 2023
He shared on X,
“It’s with complete despondency and unhappiness that I have followed the ongoing demolitions of properties across the country, especially knowing the extra hardship such acts have been heaping on hapless citizens who are already battling with multi-dimensional Poverty.

“What a responsive government should be doing under the current harsh economic conditions in the country is to come up with measures aimed at alleviating the people’s hardships and to carry out measures that will take more people out of poverty.

“Even if there are some violations as the governments are claiming, this critical time is not auspicious for such an exercise knowing the hardship in the land and the consequences it will have on the poor who are struggling to make ends meet with their little resources.

“The poor in our midst who are putting their meager resources are going through very severe financial stress that should not be multiplied further. In some cases, the properties being demolished are the life time savings and retirement abodes of the aged and incapacitated.

“My appeal therefore is for the respective governments involved in this act to consider the hardship in the country and try and put a human face to their actions. While we should enforce sensible regulations, all actions of government must show compassion. -PO.”

Politics / Demolition: Lagos Won’t Bow To Propaganda – Commissioner by LifestyleTonite: 10:31am On Nov 30, 2023
The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has said the state won’t bow to any propaganda amid the controversy generated by the demolition of houses and structures that have no approval.

The state government has been in action of late by demolishing illegal structures, especially those encroaching on waterways, thereby leading to heavy flooding and loss of properties.

The action by the government has generated controversy, with some quarters saying it is a targeted attack on the Igbo tribe from a section of the country.

In response, Wahab, during a recent interview on Arise TV, stated that no tribe was being targeted, adding that the buildings being demolished were those without approval. The commissioner further stated that if the buildings had approval, that would have been made known by their owners.

Wahab also gave reason why most of the buildings were demolished at completion point and not at the inception. According to him, the properties were rushed during the COVID-19 pandemic when restrictions on movement were enforced, which prevented government officials from accessing those areas for inspections.

Despite Wahab’s explanation, cries still abound on social media, where many are claiming that the demolished structures must have been approved by shady government officials.

Reacting, Wahab shared on X, “We are not going to bow to any propaganda, blackmail or threat. No one can break the law and still benefit from it. The law will take it’s course. The era of anyhowness is completely over!”

If those houses are destroyed now, the "they hate us" people will say they are being targeted. But when the whole area is flooded as a result of no passage for water, they are always quick to mock Lagos on social media, saying, "see the Lagos Tinubu built."

Their latest tactics is to say that no building goes up without government approval, therefore the demolitions are illegal. Okay, provide the approval letter you got before you built on a canal like a ship, they go mute.

One word for those houses... Otilor

Politics / Benin Founded Lagos – Oba Of Benin by LifestyleTonite: 5:13pm On Nov 27, 2023
The Oba of Benin, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has said Benin founded Lagos and can be proven through history books.

The monarch, however, stated that the Lagos founded by his ancestors is not the whole of Lagos as the city is known today but a subsection of it.

Oba Ewuare II said this during his visit to Lagos on Sunday where he was received by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Addressing an audience, the monarch said, “I cannot help but say that it is in history books that Benin founded Lagos. But when some people hear it now they go haywire that ‘what is the Oba saying?’ But it is true o. Go and check the records. Maybe not all of Lagos as we know it now but certain areas in Lagos – maybe the nucleus -was founded by my ancestors. The Oba of Lagos will say so.”

Meanwhile during his stay in Lagos, the Oba of Benin said the Presidency of President Bola Tinubu was ordained by God, just as he urged all Nigerians to support his administration.

Buttressing his point, the monarch noted that the victory of Tinubu in the 2023 presidential poll and his emergence as the incumbent President of Nigeria showed God ordained him to rule the country.

He said diversity is good for Nigeria and urged the people to iron out their differences and live as a family in peace, unity and harmony with one another.

“God has ordained that Tinubu would become President of Nigeria. We are all one. I am for peace and tranquility. We must live together as one. Nigeria is big. We must iron out our differences and learn to live together as one, big family,” he said.

Politics / Fashola Petitions IGP, DSS, NCC Over Fake News By Jackson Ude by LifestyleTonite: 9:05am On Aug 08, 2023
Former minister and governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, the Department of State Services and the Nigerian Communications Commission over a false publication targeting his character.

The report was published across social media by one Jackson Ude, Yoruba Sheikh and Reportera.

In the report, Fashola’s residence in Abuja was said to be barricaded by soldiers because he was allegedly writing the judgment to be delivered by the judges of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal on the 2023 presidential election.

However, the same Fashola was spotted in Lagos at a social function as confirmed by sources who shared photos of the former governor at the event.

In a statement on Monday signed by his aide, Hakeem Bello, Fashola categorically dismissed the allegations against him as being entirely without merit and damaging to his reputation.

“Fashola expressed his disappointment with the spread of this false information on social media platforms and has called on security agencies to take action against those responsible for spreading fake news,” the statement reads.

“In response to the allegation, Fashola clarified that he has been away from Abuja for an extended period of time, rendering the claims entirely unfounded.

“The former minister believes that these allegations may be part of a wider campaign to undermine the judiciary by those who seek to manipulate the institution for their own gain.

“He emphasises the importance of unmasking the perpetrators and their sponsors and ensuring that they face the appropriate legal consequences.”

The former minister has now written to relevant authorities for action to be taken against the peddlers of the fake news targeting his personality.

A copy of the petition as obtained by Concise News can be seen below.

Politics / Re: Joe Abah Cautions Tinubu Against Appointing FCT Indigene As Minister Of FCT by LifestyleTonite: 10:32pm On Aug 06, 2023
Biafrans can't help but expose their covetousness for other people's property. What Joe Abah, a Biafran, is basically doing is trying to ensure that Abuja doesn't have any identity in terms of indigenous ownership. That way, in a couple of years time, they can start screaming no man's land. That's the same way Ezekwesili said Lagos is a "shared space".

Igbo people have exposed themselves so badly. Go on Twitter and Facebook and see the way they are freely expressing their hate for Nigeria. The whole thing has gotten out of hand that neutral Nigerians have seen them for who they are.

Just check the names attached to anti-Nigeria comments, they are usually from South-Easterners. This is unlike nairaland where real names are not used.

How can you be glad that a neighbouring country that is not fit to lace your country's shoes is insulting your country? Yet, you want your son Peter Obi to rule over the same Nigeria. You can't wish evil on a company and still want to be its boss. If you curse the ground, the curses will follow you everywhere as long as you walk on it.

Yes, Northern senators may oppose military intervention based on genuine reasons, but deep down, they are happy about the coup going on in West Africa because it means if such happens in Nigeria, the West won't have any strong country in the region to help restore democracy. It also means that one of their sons will become the military leader because they are the majority in the military. Remember their born-to-rule mentality. Once that happens, their evil Islamization agenda will be unstoppable.

Right now, Southern Nigeria is able to stop RUGA and other land grabbing legislations they've been pushing. But under a junta, no lawmaker will exist to oppose such move. They will simply take land from different regions and hand them to the Fulani who are mostly from Niger and Mali. Sadly, Igbo people can't seem to see this because their hatred for Yoruba people has blinded them. Only a blind man will say the hate doesn't exist. Your land which isn't much in the South-East can't be taken and handed to cattle herders all in the name of RUGA. Those cattle herders will breed like roaches and take over your land. You won't even have the luxury of Twitter to voice your grouse under a junta.

What annoys me the most is that it is 95% confirmed that there are no opposing Igbo voice to the nauseating attitude the tribe is displaying on social media. Sadly, even the elders like Peter Obi, Ezekwesili and their celebrities hold the same horrible mindset and are no more scared of voicing their hatred and greed for other people's success and land. At this point, I just conclude that they are all the same and can never be trusted. That's why they can't get to the presidency.

Those of use who have been on nairaland since 2013 are not surprise by their current display on social media. When they started tribal slurs and taunting other Nigerians because Goodluck Jonathan gave them an edge, we all thought the comments were just coming from riff raffs in their region. But now, we can see that even the highly educated ones and those in position of power who ought to know better are no different.

The best part is that every other Nigerian can now see them clearly. It is now clear that they hate the country and the reason is because they can't function without hating on something. If they were a country, they will hate on themselves, which they actually do; it's just that hating on other Nigerians gives them a false unity.

I would have advised the Igbo to retrace their steps but I've come to realize that they were never without hatred, so they have nothing to retrace. They can keep it up while other Nigerians move forward.
