Politics / FG Alerts On Likely Heavy Flood by mukina2: 5:23pm On May 21
FG ALERTS STATES ON LIKELY HEAVY FLOOD

The Federal Government has advised States and Nigerians living in flood prone communities to take precautionary measures against heavy flood which may result from torrential rainfall as well as opening of the Lagdo dam by the Cameroonian authorities as it happened last year.

This warning was given by the Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Ochekpe in a meeting with the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe in her office.

According to Mrs. Ochekpe, in view of the fact that the Kashimbilla multi-purpose dam being constructed by the Federal Government in Taraba state to reduce the impact of water released from Cameroon is not yet completed, there is a need for concerted efforts by state governments to mitigate the likely effect of the large volume of water that may be released from the Cameroonian dam in the peak of the raining season.

While stating that Nigeria and Cameroon have reached a substantial level of understanding on how to prevent an occurrence of the devastation caused to Nigerian communities last year, the Water Resources Minister urged state government to complement this initiative by clearing drainages and evacuating people from flood plains in their states.

She also disclosed that work is at various advanced stages on twenty three dam projects which the Jonathan administration embarked upon to provide safe water for different communities, irrigation for farmers and generate additional megawatts for the power sector in the country.

Ochekpe said six of the dams located in Imo, Ondo, Katsina, Abia, and the Federal Capital Territory are ready for commissioning while the Kashimbilla multi- purpose dam will be ready before the next raining season.

Speaking earlier, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe said the Jonathan administration has made greater impact on all sectors of the Nation’s socio-economic landscape than any previous administration in two years.

He stressed the need for greater collaboration between the Ministry of Water Resources and the department of Public Affairs in order to effectively transmit the giant strides of the Transformation Agenda in the Water sector to the public.

Overland ready for the trip to Enugu. The few elites present at the airport appear not happy about the turn of events.

The corpse is right now being loaded into an Overland Airland Jet, en route Enugu.

Part of today’s programme was that the body will be taken to the Nationaal Assembly for a reception there. But it appers that plan has been shelved. We are unable to confirm the reason for that at the moment.

“What I miss most about our father is the Daddy role he plays. To me he is not a celebrity or anything that other people see. He took charge of the family by ensuring that we have the best of morals. No matter how busy he is, he always make out time for us to know what we are doing or not doing and to also make sure we are always on track.
That is what we are really missing” – Chidi Chike Achebe

Education / Richmond Open University Proprietor Arrested For Operating Illegally by mukina2: 9:19am On May 21
THE Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission and the National University Commission on Friday arrested the proprietor of Richmond Open University, Enugu, “Professor” Mazi Chris Okoro for allegedly operating an illegal institution.

Also arrested were the son of the university’s proprietor and four other staff of the institution.

The ICPC officials also interrogated a Reverend Sister in-charge of the Luminary International Centre for Health and Alternative Medicine which had metamorphosed into Society for Energy Health with its headquarters at Mgbowo in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The ICPC officials who raided the university located at 31, Ziks Avenue, Enugu, immediately handed over the suspects to the police at Uwani Police Divisional Headquarters, Enugu.

Items recovered from them included a large quantity of West African Examination Council and diploma certificates, doctorates, masters and bachelors’ degrees as well as honorary doctorate degrees.

It was learnt that Okoro who claimed that he bagged his professorship by “convention” instead of merit, said he could not remember the total number of his graduates in each academic session.

When asked to name his the vice-chancellor as well as members the senate committee of the institution, he said he could not recollect the names of any of the principal officers.

Okoro reportedly said, “I do not have any registration with NUC because I opened this school as a distant learning institution. This university has been operating since 2005 when a court gave judgement in my favour.”

Education / JAMB To Scrap Paper Exam In 2015 – Ojerinde by mukina2: 3:56pm On May 20
Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board is to scrap the Paper Pencil Test in 2015.

The JAMB Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. ’Dibu Ojerinde, stated this in an interview with our correspondent on Saturday, after supervising the maiden Computer Based Testing for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

Ojerinde, who said he was happy with the outcome of the CBT, added that other forms of examination would be scrapped by 2015.

He said, “We are thinking of 2015. By 2015 registration, we will be asking candidates to go fully into Computer Based Testing but that again depends on availability of centres.

“For now, we have only 70 centres all over the country and this is not sufficient. We are encouraging as many individuals, who can participate in this project to go and build their centres then we will patronise them. But if it has to go beyond it, so be it. We are flexible we want to see how far everybody is able to cope with it.”

Ojerinde said over 227,000 results withheld for lack of Biometric Data Verification had been released to after scrutiny.

He blamed the problems on overzealous supervisors and invigilators.

He said, “We have scrutinised the results and we found out that some of the supervisors were over zealous and some investigators also misbehaved. They did not allow the children to do the biometrics and they allowed them to write examination. For those with genuine cases, we have released their results.

Meanwhile, Uche Okonkwo, who applied to study Physics, said, “The CBT is okay and better than PPT. It is a bit better and preferable. It is user-friendly.”
