hy lao, its of a great interest to me when i see pple like you wanting to make moves in life. First, let me bring to your understanding that i have also applied for a student visa in the american embassy. I was denied just because i wasnt properly guided. I will like to encourage you and guide you well. Like smile4kenn said, u do not to be afraid of those things, eg passport, bank statement etc. what matters are: 1. get the admission letter 2. your sponsor cos a student is not expected to sponsor his/her self 3. your new e- passport is preferable cos most embassies dont accept the old one 4. your sponsor's bank statement must meet the cost of your study as estimated in your i-20 form and must be opened for at least more than six month 5. you must also have international exam certificate, eg toefl, sat 6. your age also counts compared with the level of education you wish to pursue, if incase you are applying for undergraduate at 26years, they might not give you visa. 7. support documents like your own personal statement and family ties 8. you must be able to convince the interviewing office enough that you will come back to your country. anyway, Good luck in your endeavour, more help ? pls contact me on my email: goshen360@yahoo.co.ukGood luck

IF IT IS A DOCUMENT U MUST PRODUCE WHEN APPLYING FOR CANADIAN STUDENT VISA, THEN U HAVE TO GET IT. ITS NOT COMPULSORY FOR US STUDENT VISA. MORESO, U NEED DOCUMENTS LIKE ACCEPTANCE LETTER, DOCUMENTS SHOWING PAYMENT OF SCHOOL FEE IF APPLICABLE TO THE SCHOOL, BANK STATEMENT OF SPONSORER WITH SUFFICIENT FUND, YOUR OWN PERSONAL BANK STATEMENT, SAT OR TOEFL SCORES/CERTIFICATE, , DATS ALL I CAN REMEMBER FOR NOW. I WILL UPDATE YOU AS I THINK OF MORE. EMAIL ME: GOSHEN360@YAHOO.CO.UKGOOD LUCK

I didnt get U.S Study visa a yr before i applied to Canada and U.k and yes i changed my passport before i applied and i got my study permit. Now i'm in canada so i suggest u get a new one so that you can leave the country the same school year you applied for.

You do not need a proof of health insurance for a Canadian Visa/Study permit. However, since you have resided in Naija, you will be asked to undergo medicals (I think they still use one hospital in Yaba) before your application is approved. You'd need to apply at least 4mths in advance because the process could take between 2-4mths altho I know of peeps that have gotten theirs in 3wks. When you arrive Canada, your institution will give you an option of buying health insurance (if you do not have one already)

PLease enlighten me on the admission and visa process from the beginning.
Sonye: You need to work on getting an admission first. This is a list of Canadian Universities. . .you can browse their websites and choose the ones that appeal to you. http://www.aucc.ca/can_uni/our_universities/index_e.htmlBased on the programmes, they seem to have similar admission requirements. Feel free to holla at me if you want me to give you recommendations. Also, deadlines are fast approaching for different programs, especially for the Fall 2008 session. If/when you get your admission, acquiring your visa is the next step.

2:2 will be tough to get a place in Canada, I haven't heard much about 'pre-masters' programs in Canada, Delta007 may have more info on that. Concerning the USA, write the GRE or GMAT depending on the school and find out their other requirements.

Which one be pre-masters again? When I have some time on my hand, I'd do a lil search to see programs or universities that a lil flex.

U dont need a new passport. Ordinarily, it is illegal for you to obtain a new internationla passport when u still have a valid one but the loophole in the Nigerian immigration system has given ways to one person having as many Nigerian International passport as possible. The amount on your bank statement or your sponsor's bank statement matters a lot. It is always used as a yardstick to measure your economic status here in Nigeria and your ability to pay for your tuition fee as well as other associated expenses. How long is your program? 1 yr, 2yrs or 4yrs? If your tuition fee is $16k dollars, you have only N1.3mil which is approx $11k. You still have to make it up. There are other expenses you have to take into consideration. - Accommodation (it differs from city to city but it could start at $300/mth and up) - Utilities (Phone, electricity, etc, approx $50/mth), if you are prudent, you could find a roomate to split these small costs cos they add up. - Your feeding and other upkeep (that's up to you) - Book and Stationery supplies - Health insurance - Miscellenous spendings These are some basic costs you have to put into perspective while planning. Canada no be naija where you go say "Ogoro must jump"; if you dont pay yur rent first of the month, you stand a chance of being kicked out. If you dont pay your bills, your services will be suspended and you stand a chance of ruining your credit. Previously, as an international student, you have to be well studded financially because it was prohibited for int'l students to work off campus. It wasnt as if the jobs on campus was there and even if you got one, the pay was nothing especially when you work probably like 10hrs or even less a week. However, the new law which was implemented last yr (or the previous), allows you to work up to 20hrs a week (as a student) anywhere. And during the break periods, summer and Christmas, you are allowed to work 40+hrs (full time). Depending on the job and hrs worked, alot of students are able to meet their needs (rent, books, feeding, etc) on a monthly. However, you still need to somehow find a way to knock off the tuition fee. The summer jobs are usually helpful but make sure you do your math properly otherwise you'd come here and start causing heaven and earth. If u extra fine, I fit give u one room for my house sha Anyway, I hope this was helpful. By the way, what school are you looking at?

I admit, I havent heard of that institution before but just browsing thru their website, that na one of those moi moi universities. At least, if you want to spend money, spend am for better thing. University education is not just about the degree but the environment, colleagues, etc u get to interact with.

Mr. Abiodun, Money order is not a commonly used method of payment in Nigeria anymore. The easiest you get is International Bank Draft or Bank Transfer. You cannot send Western Union Money transfer from Nigeria. Like sending it through Union bank, you must have a current account or better send it through someone else's current account, you'll only pay a certain charge which will be about #2500 and in 5 working days, they get your payment out there. If you need any assistance about your travel needs, feel free to consult Travelcare Consults. You should be able to get a bank draft. Banks like Citibank, Ecobank, etc issue international bank drafts. You can also wire transfer the funds to the institution. Ask the institution to provide bank details. Another option is to pay someone you know, who's at this end and let the person do the transfer for you. P.S. Keep in mind that you do not have to pay your fees (only a deposit) until the embassy asks you to do so.
