ATM theft, how can it be averted?
Re: How Can ATM Theft Be Averted? by friskie2: 5:08pm On Mar 06, 2009
An individual who apparently is making a bank transaction at the ATM.
What he really is doing is placing a trap in the ATM machine to “capture” the next user card.
Altering the ATMs is a risky business, these individuals work in teams. The lookout warns of any possible eye witnesses / or of the next potential victim.
A next client using the ATM, after the trap has been set. He inserts his card and begins his transaction.
The ATM card is confiscated, and the customer is confused, asking himself, Why has my card been confiscated? However, here we see the cavalry coming to help, (HELP!!!).
Here, the thief pretending to help. What he is really doing is trying to gain the “customers” PIN, now that he has captured his card.
The good Samaritan convinces the “Customer” He can recover the card, if he presses his PIN at the same time the Samaritan press “cancel” and “enter”.
After several attempts the “customer” is convinced his card has been confiscated. The “customer” and the Samaritan leave the ATM.
Satisfied the area is clear, the thief
returns to recover the confiscated card from his trap. He not only has the card, he also has the PIN the “customer” provided unknowingly
In possession of the card and the PIN he leaves the ATM point
The trap is made up of XRAY film, which is the preferred material by thieves; Simply because of the black color which is similar in appearance to the slot on the card reader.
The trap is then inserted into the ATM slot. Care is taken not to insert the entire film into the slot, the ends are folded and contain glue strips for better adhesion to the inner and outer surface of the slots.
Once the ends are firmly glued and fixed to the slot, it is almost impossible to detect by unsuspecting clients.
Slits are cut into both sides of the trap, This prevents your card being returned prior to completing your transaction.
As soon as the “Customer” has gone, and they have your PIN , The thief can remove the glued trap, by grasping the folded tips, he simply pulls the trap out that has retained your card,

Recommendation!

1.-Once your card has been confiscated, observe the ATM slot and the card reader for any signs of tampering. Should you see the film tips glued to the slot, unglue, pull the trap out and recover your card.
2.- Report IMMEDIATELY to the BanK.

Its not only through ATM those ppl can steal ur money.
They can easily steal it through any PDQ machine - all they need is someone who works in the PDQ operations centre in nigeria, they'll configure the PDQ to store ur details including ur PIN, then the worker installs this same PDQ anywhere e.g bars, cinema, eatery etc.
End of the month they go back to the PDQ, remove the data and clone cards using ur details.
These ppl make millions a day in Nigeria a day.

Solution: Dont use ur pin or card anywhere, if u need cash enter the bank

@ SEUN & ALL NIRALANDERS!!! PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THIS MY POST MAKES A TOPIC AND GETS WELL CIRCULATED ALL OVER NIGERIA!!!, I WOKE UP TODAY VOWING TO START A LOUD CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE LATEST ATM SCAM STRATEGY TO WHICH I RECENTLY FELL A VICTIM.

NOW HEAR MY STORY!! angry

Two weeks ago, I was ion my office by 6pm, when I started getting text messages of debit alerts from my account with a certain bank I will not mention for now, each of debits of N20,000!! By the time I rushed downstairs to my car to check my ATM card in the lock which I thought had been stolen, I was terribly shocked to find my card in tact inside the wallet!!!
As all this was happenning, more text messages were comming in untill a total of N85,000 had been withdrawn, of course because there was only (90k in the account.
It took me 30 mins to get to the nearest branch somewhere in Lekki, with my ATM card only to verify that someone had used a clonned ATM card at far away Isolo to swipe me of my hard earned money!!!

For 2 weeks now, the bank has been in an endless investigation, (some of whose effort I appreciate anyway) and I went to the Zenith bank used in Isolo and they refused to give me the pictures of the thief on the grounds that it was against their policy to reveal such facts to individuals, that my banks audit team would liase with theirs to get the details,

this is so saaaaaad!!!!! I cant even see who stole my money, whose picture iswith the bank,at least, I can publish that on the paper and track down the criminal.

NOW, ANYWAY, THIS IS A PICTURE OF ANOTHER ATM PROFESSIONAL FRAUDSTER IN CARD CLONNING THAT I WAS PRIVILEGED TO GET FROM A BANK!!!
Guys, recognise this man, spread this picture, track him down, let him die!!

Find attatchment.

NB: Pls anyone that has any useful information on how I can sucessfully get my money back from the bank should please give me a piece of his mind.
Thanks.

Your bank will never send u an email or sms telling you to provide your ATM PIN.

There was a time i lost my ATM Card. I went to the bank the next day for deactivation of the card and requested for a new card
i already saved my card number on the system before it got lost. I did that when i got tired of typing it, because i was using it to buy recharge cards online often. after collecting the new card, can you believe it that the old card was still working online.
the new card and the new card had different expiry date and PIN, but both were still linked to my account.
Anyways, your PIN is the kokolet

Did you disclose your PIN to anyone or what??How did they even manage to clone the card? These fraudsters are advancing every minute. . . . . . But dont you think they have insiders in the bank or what

How they do it?
(The dogs that chew the bones hung on their necks)

2. You use your ATM card at a machine and someone comeswith a kind of sophisticated card that he slots into the same machine and readsyour card details which he proceeds to use to clone your card nad rip you off.

3. Still speculating and suspecting that the bank staff have their way of getting your details and outsourcing it to the crooks that would clone your card, so it was not a matter of me exposing my pin to anyone, that was why I said earlier that this is the latest ATM scam strategy!!!

But whatever, why would Nigerian banks slack in protecting the clonning of their trusting customers that prefered them to other banks? Why would a bank not take responsibility in repaying their innocent customers whose fault it was not in the fraudlent debiting of their account?

PLEASE GUYS, I AM STILL ASKING FOR A LEAD TO RECOVERING MY 85K AND HOW TO GET SEUN'S ATTENTION TO POPULARISE THIS TOPIC AND GET MORE PEOPLE AWARE OF THIS LATEST SYSTEM AS WELL AS TO SEE THE FACE OF THAT CRIMINAL AND HUNT HIM DOWN.

Re: How Can ATM Theft Be Averted? by neuman: 3:47pm On Mar 24, 2009
@ WATERWORKS, your questions are not wrong, every fact has straight answers.

1. The guy's case was a concluded investigation from another bank which is circulating his pictures among banks, hence in my wide search for what happened to my hard earned 85k, I got this same picture both from a branch of my bank and other banker friends in other banks, I was actually surprised when I traced Walesmann's thread to another thread on Nairaland where his pictures, quite different from mine were posted to hunt him down.

2. The issue of the Zenith bank branch at Isolo where the money was cashed not showing me the pictures was because it is a different bank from the bank I have the account with, hence the policy protocol of wanting to deal with my bank directly and not me. Haaa! if it were same bank ATM machine that was used and they are still not showing me the pictures now, they will soon get the news on the paper!, Though I am getting impatient with the audit department of my bank taking up to 2 weeks to resolve issues with Zenith and get the pictures.

3. I dont really understand what you mean by no threads, no websites pls explain.

4. If you look at the pictures, you will see that they contain information that prove they were released by a bank after investigation.

So please guys, keepyour eyes open in hot search for the thief, lets not wait to be a victim to his mischeif again.
Re: How Can ATM Theft Be Averted? by waterworks(f): 5:08pm On Mar 24, 2009
ehen more like it.
its just odd to post a topic without any backing. you have to provide proof. ive heard stories of how people forward piks of people with many stories true and false. i could tell it was from a bank wat i couldnt tell was why it was beign circulated with that story.

thread:
normally when you post news or anything u either get it from another thread on nairaland or somewhere else. then u add the liknk to the thread.

link:
or a news website and you add the link to the website.
then people can clarify your story. if not evryone on nairaland will just be posting "gist"!

At times when we are wrongly debited at the ATM, do we get any proof other than a complaint for the bank to act on.

The guy in the picture hasn;t even come out to complain, attack or sue nueman for bad publicity or defeamation of character.

Pls, we need to get these guys b4 they are too organized. We must put on end to these LAZY acts.

THE ONLY THING IS THAT IT'S UNFORTUNATE THAT OUR BANKS AND EVEN THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT RESPONSIVE TO OCCURENCE AND EVENTS AS OPPOSED TO WHAT WE HAVE IN DEVELOPED WORLD. WHEN THINGS GO WRONG AT THE ATM WITH ANY CUSTOMER, YOUR BANK IS THE FIRST POINT OF CALL WHICH SHOULD REQUEST FOR THE PRINT OUT OF YOUR TRANSACTION FROM THE ATM OR PROBABLY THE LOCATION, BECAUSE ALL THESE TRANSACTIONS GOES THROUGH YOUR BANK AND ANOTHER FINANCIAL INSTITUTION THAT'S CONNECTED TO IT AND IT SHOULD BE TRACEABLE AT ANY POINT IN TIME. I OFTEN WONDER HOW AN ATM MACHINE WILL EXIST AT ACERTAIN LOCATION WITHOUT PROPER SECURITY PUT IN PLACE TO PROTECT THE USERS. IN THE DEVELOPED COUNTRIES, EVEN SMALL SHOP OWNERS OWN OR LEASE ATM MACHINE IN CONJUCTION WITH BANKS OR THE ATM OPERATORS AND THESE MACHINE ARE MONITORED FROM TIME TO TIME; AND ANY MALFUNCTION COULD BE DETECTED AT ANY POINT OF OPERATION; I GUESS IN NIGERIA, THEY GIVE US WHAT WE WANT; THEY KNOW THEY CAN BUY THEIR WAY THROUGH OUR GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS, THAT IS, IF WE HAVE ONE, MAY GOD HELP US ooooo, no value for your money, angry

The scammer in the picture must be staying around Ajah , along Lekki-Epe expressway.

From information I got from my friend that sent the mail to me, he said all the ATM frauds took place very late in the Night (between 10pm and 11pm) at Ikota shopping complex, beside VGC , and at weekends too . So , it is likely he lives around that area.

I believe we can collectively do something. I know so many people who have lost money to these people. There is need to get a scapegoat . Hopefully , he may lead us to the root.
