Storekeepers, Lets Meet Here.
« on: April 30, 2009, 08:14 PM »

I own some chains of stores, had worked in large stores before and just likes the prospects and challenges of storekeeping.

If you work in any store, big or small, if you have ideas in modern stocking or purchasing and supply, then we need to interact.

Very profitable if you are skilled in it. Depending on the type of materials you deal with, the cost differs. Takes lots of hard work to set up but works like magic if you could get it working.

I have any eye for bearings now, setting up somewhere where bearings of all shapes and sizes could be found. Nigeria's first mega bearing wharehouse. Comprising bearings in the plant and machinaries, motor vehicle, earth moving equipment, forklift, and indeed even human being bearings Grin Grin (just joking)

This could be challenging but will be very interesting, and lest I forget, profitable.

I am not limiting this thread to only storekeepers, are there no inventory control officers here on nairaland? By that I mean those that have worked or still working in large corporations as inventory management staff in various stores. I am looking to get help on various stock management systems.

And are there any known software packages programmed for storekeeping?

Biggest problem with store management comes in the early years when you need to put infrasture in place, in a country like Nigeria, men,  it ain't funny,  BASIC INFRASTRUTURE and maintainance of regular stocks if INSTRUCTURE doens't gulp all of your cash will be problem.

@ invisible,

Can you advise softwares to use for accounting exclusive to store owners to manage profits and loss statments,

@damola, I also have same problem here. I have been doing this on the manual level and need advice on how to take it more electonic, to improve profitability. I know that sun microsystems has one software programmed for stocks. It could help in inventory control and management, simulating your re-order levels automatically as you enter the quantities you but and post out the quantities you sell.

The stock balance will be shown at each month end and you can easily measure your profits. It also does weighted average costing between your different purchase prices.

We use Quickbooks accounting. We've been using it for years and it works like magic. We use it for everything:
Profit and loss, Customer management, Consignment tracking, Payment tracking, Tax calculations, discount balancing, Inventory, stocking distribution mapping, quarterly income management, employee & salary management etc.

Best part: You don't need to have a degree on Accounting to use the software. Everything is simplified with a step by step guide.
You just can't go wrong with Quickbooks. http://quickbooks.intuit.com

Come back and thank me later.

Thanks Joan for your replies and directions. They are so useful, bookshops is an area I have plenty of interest (being an avid reader myself) I believe it will not be difficult for me.

I will check out the software and keep you posted. Thanks once again.

Hi All, the website below is an ecommerce store based in the UK and supplying businesses there and in Nigeria at wholesale prices. We stock a broad range of consumer goods ranging from items as minute as cufflinks, designer shirts, shoes and bags, to high value items like plasma TVs and computers. We do retail and wholesale at some of the LOWEST prices available in the UK.We sell below half the price of most high street stores on many products!

Importantly,we ship to Nigeria at very reasonable rates. In most cases ,you do not need to pay upfront for goods ordered from our company (which is a bona fide UK registered company). All you need do is visit the website, then send an email or call us to indicate what you are interested in.We will respond giving you details on shipping cost, etc. We will ship all items to Lagos from where you can collect from one of our local Representatives. It is essentially cash and carry.

We also collaborate with two Christian ministries in Nigeria to help small business owners develop their business by providing a variety of goods at highly competitive wholesale prices direct from the UK .

We can also arrange container loads on ex chainstore ( Argos, Tesco etc ) products, at below 50% of the usual store prices.
