We seen and heard people refer to you by different names. What does CBA stand for?
CBA stands for Chukwudi Bashari Anekwe. My mother calles me Bashiru.
What name should we call you?
You can call me Chet. Everyone knows me as Chet
Who is CBA?
That’s an Interesting question. I would say I’m a down to earth, smart, funny, good natured, intense guy who loves to laugh.
When did your career as an actor begin and what are some of the projects you have done?
The first acting I ever did was a Ribena commercial in Nigeria when I was 10. I have since gone on to do many theater productions in NYC from the Joseph Cinque in Amistad, to Mark Anthony in Julius Cesear and many other roles. Of course I was blessed to do “30 Days” opposite the incomparable Genevieve Nnaji.
We are very interested in knowing how you came about acting in the Nigerian movie 30 Days?
Interesting story, I was contacted by the producer/writer/director Mildred Okwo who I had been recommended to. She asked about my coming to audition for the film, which I said “Sure”. However, between that first call and her ramping up to start filming, I was recommended to her several other times. So she calls me back much later and we talk. There was a good feeling between us. And although I had not actually met her, I wanted to work with her on this film. She felt the same way. So she offered me the role and I was totally honored to do it.
Did you have any second thoughts making this journey home to be part of Nollywood considering the differences in the quality of films in Nigeria and US?
I would be lying if I said that I didn’t have any second thoughts. I was also wondering if my fellow actors in Nigeria would accept me being that I was not really part of Nollywood. But once I got there, all those fear were laid to rest. In no small measure to the cast and crew Mildred and Ego Boyo assembled. With crew members from LA and Nigeria, all hand picked according to their talent and not some sort of nepotism made it a joy to work.
What was your experience being back to Nigeria after so many years away?
Wow, things have changed. Then again, something remained completely the same. I was pleasantly surprised in some instances and just shook my head in others. Nonetheless, it was great to be home after such a long time away.
Had you watched any Nigerian films prior to coming to Nigeria? If so what did you think of them in terms of quality?
I have to admit, I had not watched a whole lot of Nigerian films. Interestingly, the couple that I did see, I noticed Genevieve immediately. I said to myself that girl can act.
Tell us some of your experiences on the set of 30 Days, did it live up to any of your expectations?
Yes. After meeting Mildred I began to see this was a woman with vision and determination to make a great movie and pull Nollywood, single-hand, to a new age. Getting to Nigeria completely confirmed this. She and the crew were relentless. As an actor all that you really ask from a director is to have a clear vision, know what they want. That was incredibly true with Mildred. What she wanted and expected from everyone was clear and precise. She expected top quality work and attitude and nothing less was acceptable. It made working with her easy in that sense. Unless when she was screaming at you, then most of us ran like scared rabbits, make de vision no kill you…
Working with the incomparable Genevieve, who is the most instinctual actor I have ever worked with, was amazing. If you think she’s beautiful on screen, her beauty is even more radiant in person. She simply stunning any which way you slice it. I also met a wonderful group of actors. From old friends like Segun Arinze to new friends like Kalu Ikeagwu and the wonderfully elegant Joke Silva to the gorgeous Nkiru Alintah, It was a wonderful experience.
Tell us a little bit about the character you play in “30 Days”?
I play Kene Alumona. A guy who has been out of Nigeria for over 14 years, comes home and crossed paths and falls for the lovely Chinora Onu, played by Genevieve, and then gets swept away in a torment of events that rock his world.
I spoke to a couple of people who worked on set of 30 Days, and they say your performance will increase the competition in the lead male category in Nollywood. What do you have to say about this?
Ah, I appreciate the love. I see it like this. My only job is to make sure that I give everything to my performance. I owe it to my director, the audience, but most importantly to my fellow actors. If people see this as competition, it’s not. Actors love to see good work. Well at least I do. You see for me, it is all about the work. Not celebrity, stardom or anything like that. It is and will always be about the work for me. Making sure your performance is the best it can be.
On a lighter note, we have seen some clips of the movie, and your scenes with Genevieve seem quite intense, what was it like making out with Nigeria’s screen starlet? Any real life sparks?
Hey, which red blooded man’s man does not dream of being next to Genny? Who? I don’t know any! Me too I used to dream, but than I said “Who dash me?”… On a serious note, it was very professional. We had scenes to do and we made sure that the audience can’t tell if we are a real couple or not. If that happens, then we have done out job.
Then again I would like to take this opportunity to ask Genny to marry me… Just kidding…
From the clips, it looks like there maybe a real love scene in this movie compared to some of the ones we have seen in Nigeria films. Are we going to see a real love scene ala Hollywood or is it going to be much of the same things we see in Nollywood?
Well, that you’ll have to wait and see. All I will say is, the most important thing is realism and truth for an actor. If the scene doesn’t ring true to me, I will ask questions, explore and discover what is needed to make sure it’s right. So if there is a love scene (I’m not saying there isn’t) it will be done with the realism and truth that is deserves. Neither Mildred, Genny, nor I would accept anything less.
Tell us about your role in Phat Girlz starring Monique and when will that film be released?
The writer/director of Phat Girlz, Nngest Likke, saw my website and asked me to come and audtion for the lead role. I went and was called back several times and was in the running to book the lead to the final decision when they went with someone else. But the director was so impressed with my audition that she wrote in a character just so I would be part of the film. In my scene I play directly opposite Monique, the star of the movie. Phat Girlz, is scheduled to come out this spring in theaters.
