I'm happy for him

kalokalo:

Dangote is already investing in infrastructure in Nigeria. For example, for his cement company, he builds his own power plants, dams, pipelines, jetties, roads and is now constructing a railroad to link Obajana to the sea (Warri) so as to position his cement for exports when its capacity exceed local demand by June of 2011.

The infrastructure that he invests in gives his companies a strategic competitive advantage that his competitors cannot match. He is a man with foresight!!!!!

I thought that individual sectors could NOT invest in power sector and that it was left only to the Govt to do so, If that be the case, what are the Igbo men doing? They can invest in power sector in their manufacturing industries. Besides, what kind of power plants are we talking about? When you say railroad link, what type of railroad is this?

Bill Gates made real progress when he saw an opportunity in the Q dos software he BOUGHT from another company. He saw the potential in the software and he paid $50,000 for it.

Q Dos was modified into MS Dos, and the rest they say is history. The company he bought this key software from went under 4yrs after the demand for their products was replaced by demands for PC products -  the child of the product they sold to Bill Gates. When the business went under, they sued Microsoft for $60 million. They got  $925,000.

Dangote was a salesman/tradesman/importer (no doubt a competent one) by the time opportunity came knocking at his door albeit in form of political connections & favour. And like Bill Gates, he made good use of an opportunity.

I for one cannot criticise a person who made use of an opportunity that came their way AND the proceeds from that opportunity are not used to oppress their fellow men (in most part tongue).

To those who criticise the man, I ask - If such an opportunity came your way, what would you do?

Not saying the man is clean, who amongst our prominent figures in Nigeria (dare I say the world) is clean in ALL their dealings?

To make a debate about such matters to me sounds like asking to choose who you will marry - a murderer or child molester?

My attitude remains the same when it comes to the upcoming election - Its a choice between spit, Vaseline and KY @ the end we are still gonna get F'D!

What I would rather focus on are the achievements and impact of the person (Dangote/Adenuga/XYZ)

It feels good to have a NIGERIAN (tribe is of no concern) on the Forbes list. It just means he's has more clean hands than others, cuz i find it hard to believe that he is the RICHEST Nigerian. wink

By the way, not all who are given the opportunity can make a success of themselves.

How come an igbo man is not on the list ?

Very good question !!!

Let's look clinically at how Nigerian billionaires are made .

Dangote ; he was an ordinary cement and rice importer until 1987 when the head of state - ibrahim Babangida banned the importation of rice in the country and after several months he allowed Dangote to import ships loads of cement .

Ever since then Dangote has been an AGIP = any govt in power ,he was so close to abacha that his younger brother died with Abachas son in a plane crash. He was part of the people who bankrolled OBJ first term, second term , the aborted third term and yaraduas term.

OBJ rewarded him and Otedola with PH refineries at give away prices.

Mike Adenuga; he is not as rich as people think he is , he is a front man for IBB and Atiku. CIL which later metamorphosed to GLo was started with some wrongly sindicated Govt fund from PTDF running into some millions of dollars , which was ordered to be deposited in. TIB ( a failed south west bank) by Atiku , later the same money was syndicated to Glo as loan by TIB, the EFCC upon hearing this looked the other way and today TIB is a failed bank.

Ever wondered why the PHCN and refineries don't work in nigeria, then you might be in for the biggest shock of your lives.
The Nigerian Billionaires bought over all the downstream petroleum companies Con oil, MRS, AP, these companies to stay afloat must import fuel in to the country and for the fuel to sell people must use generators and for people to use generators then the PHCN must not work.

Questions I have Nigerians 1 how come during OBJ's reign no serious attempt was made to put PHCN into good operation despite the fact that the Bola Ige (who died mysteriously planned as far back as 2001 to put NEPA in shape.

2 how come the refineries never worked in OBJ's tenure instead the petrol pump price increased from 70k to =N= 55

3 how come all the overnite billionaires: Dangote, Otedola,Jimoh ibrahim,Adenuga made their billions during OBJ's tenure

Is someone still reading ?

you were actually making sense until you derailed towards the end, those guys were made before OBJ came, he added directly or indirectly to their vast empirs no doubt

I don't see him as the richest until someone tells me the impact of his wealth on his people (the northerners) not to mention the generality of Nigerian.
We all know what Bill Gates is doing all over the world including Nigeria in fact in a small place as UCH.

I don't dispute what others have said on this forum but it is simple, If you come out and declare your asset Forbes will check and enlist you in its magazines, And if you demand that you should be excluded the magazine has no right to include you.

Lets not over look the possibility that those who are not included may prefer to be anonymous.

OR

Do you think a drug baron would want to be in that list?

___

NOTE: There are many wealthy people in this world who prefer to be unknown, They may be wealthier or may not be half as wealthy as Dangote.
Re: 2011 Forbes Rating: Aliko Dangote Ups Wealth To 14 Billion Dollars by adminlo: 7:09pm On Mar 10, 2011
sometimes i hate nigeria.

he did not become rich because of bussiness skills or acumen . he is rich due to monopoly the govt gives him  and intimidation, blackmailing other competitors who try to supply similar goods. i know of a few business men whose containers of rice and cement was delayed at the apapa wharf  untill their demurrage is worth more than the goods itself or makes the busuness unprofitable . it has happened and is the happening with the customs , and govt. colluding with him. look at the fight he gave otedola when he wanted to go in cement .

this is despicable that govt props up evils like this
Re: 2011 Forbes Rating: Aliko Dangote Ups Wealth To 14 Billion Dollars by cau: 7:16pm On Mar 10, 2011
Dangote is on Forbes list and so what? we are here ranting for no just cause and responding to a demented fool like  fstranger3.

Yes, i celebrate Dangotes ingenuity, yes, i know he is the highest employer of labour in Nigeria, but again certainly the likes of dangote ,adenuga otedola and co are the ones equally drawing us back in Nigeria. Otedola would never allow our refineries or PHCN to work in order to rake in billions and when his name appears on forbes list fstranger3 and co would celebrate him.

The question is this, even with all their wealth what have they done for their people? Bill Gates is on forbes list but he has committed millions of dollars to eradicate polio from the entire northern region, kano state inclusive (where Dangote hails from) . Same Bill gates is currently supporting research in the eradication of malaria in Africa.

We need an ibo on the list to complete the tripod. Forbes probably doesn't know this can be a serious issue in Nigeria.
We need an Okoro on the list pleeease!

kalokalo:

It WAS Lafarge and NOT Dangote that petitioned Obasanjo about Ibeto. The policy was that only importers with evidence of cement backward integration would be allowed to import and Ibeto was not moving towards manufacturing. I

It was the same policy that forced Dangote to jettison importation for local cement manufacturing. Isn't it interesting that after all the noise Ibeto made about breaking Dangote's( imaginary) monopoly in cement, we have not heard anything about him again.

Four years after Yaradua restored his license to import, Ibeto still has not invested a kobo in local cement manufacturing while all others in the industry are expanding and building new plants in compliance with the backward integration policy in cement.

Again, Ibeto is just symptomatic of Nigerian businessmen that prefer to import (buying and selling) for decades with no interest in producing anything!!

If you don't know about someone, just keep quiet.

Ibeto is easily one of the richest men in Nigeria and he doesn't want to go public. He is a billionaire in hard currency and he is not even listed. He is into commodities, petro chemicals, real estate, auto spare parts manufacturing etc.

Follow the link below to take a little peep at his business concerns. Dangote gained advantage over him in cement business when OBJ weighed in against him in favor of Dangote.

fstranger3, How does this topic concern the Igbo People. Take it or leave it, Igbo people are rich. Every family has more than five millioniers. In as much as everybody appreciates Dangote, I don't really know what your stress is. Why such hatered. I will prefer to have rich people spread than to have one richman out of every 1000. Its a tragedy. and please shut up ur stupid mouth.

My brother, speak on what you know. Ibeto has yet to begin cement manufacturing in Nigeria four years after his import license was restored by Yar adua. The understanding was he would build a cement manufacturing plant and NOT remain only a cement importer / bagger.  It was the same policy that forced Dangote, BUA and Flour Mills to build cement manufacturing plants in Naija. Ibeto does not have two heads and if I was president, I would revoke his import license again for refusal to comply with the backward integration policy. There are currently seven cement producers in Nigeri yet all we do is hate Dangote and call him a "monopoly". We have exploiters like MTN  despoiling us and carting away our money to SA and yet Nigerians love them. Go figure!!

When industrialists like Aliko Dangote speaks, Ibeto should shut up wink

Look at the management team of Ibeto vs Dangote and you can see why Dangote is more successful. Ducktards

Kalokalo is the only one making sense on this thread but as usual Nigerians and sense don't go together unfortunately. Pity.

Anyway if other Nigerian moneybags were like Dangote and built real manufacturing industries that were making real products instead of surrounding themselves with praise singing dependencies then Nigerian youths wouldn't be dying in the Sahara desert or in Libya looking for green pasture.

CONGRATS ALHAJI DANGOTE,
This is the reason why we must make DANGOTE THE GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE in 2015,
We want to see a real self-made billion dollar man, govern the only cosmo city in Nigeria.
All the progressives must join hands to make it a reality.
We will table the idea to him and see what he thinks.

SAI DANGOTE 4 LAGOS

BTW, why is Otedolas name missing on the list ? Guess it has to do with the crash of AP's share price.
Re: 2011 Forbes Rating: Aliko Dangote Ups Wealth To 14 Billion Dollars by diggler(m): 11:43pm On Mar 10, 2011
First Big Ups to Aliko Dangote, IMO that dude should be worth closer to $25bn if u account for every every like someone said earlier.

Also a lot of other nigerians should be on that list but their wealth is shrouded in all sorts of controversy & forbes onl publishes verifiable assets.
which is why ppl like the Marc Rich boys and some other Monte Carlo, Swiss based Billionaires rarely make forbes lists.

now unto things;
I am Igbo.

From Anambra to be precise.

I also work in financial services and understand the Igbo mindset when it comes to business and money.

Until the igbo man jettisons the concept of Okoro & sons ltd. and start setting up going concerns, we will never see the forbes list.

Since various governments have been in power, we all know the various Igbos that have benefited from the various governments.
Emeka Offor was connected to various governments, yet his Oil and gas concerns are just License trading outfits.

Yet people like Kase lawal, the Sahara boys even Wale tinubu of Oando are making waves on the global scale. and boosting up their institutions

All this Igbo agitators had better sip the cool aid and shut the eff up.

Peace

But these man have monopoly on sugar, flour and cement on 150 million people, what do u expect. About time we celebrated true success borne out of the mind of confirmed geniuses, not some wuruwuru fake knockoffs from Alaba and Aba market. God bless Dangote from the North and Mike Adenuga from Ogun State. Very humble people. I just wish this country was made up of people from these two great groups mainly. I hate when some people arent pulling their weight in making Nigeria great. All some people do is tarnish Nigeria's image, with their Okija, yahoo, Tobechii Onwuara crappola.
They're hatin' grin grin grin grin If the he likes, let him be No 1 on the chart; It can never stop them locking Igbo man's gate, cleaning Igbo mans shoe and standing on the road to beg Igbo man for daily bread every day till eternity grin grin grin
If they want to prove they're successful, let their brothers from Niger and Chad remove their names from the list of No 1 poorest nations.

Does promoting Nigeria means gaining access to government houses to loot public funds or by engaging lucrative activities that brings foreign earnings like Sports, entertainment, commerce, Science and technology, which Igbo men of south-east and south-south dominated in Nigeria.
Have you not heard how the same Aden*ga's oil company was used by IBB to syphon Nigeria's oil?
If he's good in business, he's the Globacom chairman and Pascal Dozie is the MTN charman. Is MTN not doing far well than Globacom? grin grin grin
