But it's one of the busiest in the world..... My last voyage three years ago from Germany to China was a great one (Since it was my first time) and I really wanted to see the renowned Suez canal

It takes just 12 days to transit from Europe to Asia via Suez Canal, it saves fuel and transit time rather than using the western part of Africa to Asia which cost a lot fuel and transit time

To pass here, each shipping company spends close to $170,000 to $200,000 to pass through the Suez canal

Why do they have to spend such? at the bolded

in a force majeure like this..... there is little the pilot can do to stop the wind from blowing I don't know if you have ever sail before, you would understand me better

The captain of the ship isn't the one in charge when it happened.

When a ship is entering harbour, there is usually a habour pilot assigned. He knows Everything about that particular port like where the water is shallow or deep, he also has all the necessary resources and info at hand including weather forecasts.

There's a lot the pilot can do to correct the vessel's position given the realities on ground.

This must be down to human error

Exactly, the harbour pilot is to blame.

With full knowledge and experts available on board, this is the result he can give.

You think ship maneuver is that easy? can you see how tight is the canal? una go just they type for the sake of it
Did I say it was easy I been on ship countless times and I know there is a speed limit on selected water to avoid such accident.
This was human error and don't assume we make comments without knowing what we are saying.

they are alot of things that can lead to these. speed and direction of the wind is one, the ocean current is also another factors and so much more. with the size of the canal been at disadvantage also. Human error? Yes its possible but ITS WRONG TO ASSUME THE CAPTIAN WAS SLEEPING THATS WHY IT HAPPEN.

Cos they save those companies time and fuel.
Say you have a direct road network that would reduce the journey from Lagos to somewhere like Yola down to 5 hrs, and put a toll gate at both ends, bus drivers would be paying as high as 15k as toll fee.

You are right about the wind playing a major role. But my comment wasn't meant to be an insult.
Evergreen Marine Corp., a major Taiwan-based shipping company that operates the ship, said the Ever Given had been overcome by strong winds as it entered the canal, something Egyptian officials earlier said as well. High winds and a sandstorm plagued the area Tuesday, with winds gusting to 50 kph (30 mph).

This is why

Europe to Asia via normal route takes 23 days (This means it cost the ship owners more money for fuel and also transit time)

Now to cut the journey short, Ship passes through the Suez canal from Europe to Asia in just 11 days (Cutting cost on fuel and transit time) Great cost savings

Now ship owners are ready to pay such amount of money to pass through Suez canal because, they will save times their cost times three

So a bulk carrier pays almost $160,000 USD to pass through the Suez canal

Container ship may even pay more due to its tonnage

.

Not the captain but the pilot onboard, whenever a ship calls into port, a pilot boards the ship and take over command and shows where the captain should ply (Even though the captain knows but it's a regulation), but from speculations about this incident, it was a wind that made ship go off course..

When it comes to ship incident, we do not make hasten conclusions till after investigation

Egypt is loosing about $9.8 Billion dollars per day because of this incident

like my dad will always say "the pilot advise, the captain instruct".

whatever happens the captain takes all responsibilities...

It is a fact ! You can check the ship's details and capacity. It is built and designed to carry as much. Have you heard of "Monster ship" ? Trust me,"Ever Given" is even small compared to a Monster ship !

Shipping business is quite expensive , my question now is would Charters have to give room for more Laytime in a case like this. Who takes the blame for this delays ?, because the kind of money it cost to maintain a Ship per day no be beans o.

On Tuesday at around 7:45 a.m. local time (Monday night in the US), the Ever Given got stuck in high winds, sailing northbound through the Suez Canal on its way from China to Rotterdam. And it is still stuck, despite all-out efforts to refloat the ship, blocking traffic in both directions. The estimates as when it could be moved out of the way range all over the place, from days to weeks, and might have to include partially unloading the ship.

In total, there are about 165 ships (according to Lloyd’s) or 185 ships (according to Bloomberg) blocked at the Suez Canal, including 35 container carriers, 32 general cargo carriers, 40 bulk carriers, 17 crude oil tankers, 34 chemical and other products tankers, 10 LPG tankers, and so on. In addition, over 100 ships have signaled the Suez Canal as their next destination.

Unforseen circumstances happens, as it stands now more than 200 ships are stranded to pass through the Suez canal

The charterers knows the risks involved in shipping business (Grounding, Fire, sinking)

Is it stands so, Their charter rates is counting daily (Is a contract agreement)

If I lease out my Keke for you to to pay N300 per day (In a very good condition) You don't come back and tell me stories that you were sick, It was raining, or you got arrested (What I'm interested is my returns)

That's the scenerio playing out here..... And vessels queuing up to pass the Suez canal cannot go through the African route to Asia (This will cost them more money and transit time)

Shipping Business is not for the faint hearted.... Any mistake you go bankrupt
