I will advise you stay in Zaria and establish yourself by saving and investing alot.
You can go to Lagos and other big cities for vacation when you have enough money.
The ratrace in Lagos is semi-hell according to my sister who works for a firm there.
Cost of living is high like the ransom Nigerian bandits demand.

130k is not bad to start with in Lagos depending on the area of d job, if d job is at island (VI) obviously he can't afford accommodation in that area so he should project ikorodu as an alternative means, meaning he has to be waking up as early as possible to beat traffic.
If your friend want to improve his career he can consider Lagos if only he can cut his coat according to his size, he will definitely survive.
Ikorodu!?
If he is to shuttle from Ikorodu to Island he better stay back at Zaria.
I once did it and it wasn't easy.

If your friend is strong, smart and ambitious lagos job is better because of career development. He can be moving from one job to a greater one in lagos while such opportunity is rear in zaria. Most people that succeeded career-wise has one thing or the other to do with lagos. Zaria is more or less a residential community; Nothing drive you career-wise

1. Lagos is not heaven or America. But it's the best in Nigeria and exposes you to anything that is available anywhere in the world.

2. 130k is ok if (a) you are not paying rent or u don't mind stayin in slums or staying far from ur work place. A single room from Ojota upward is 120k to 180k (you will pay more than double that amount the first year. .
(b) food and transportation. You will spend 26-45k on transport every month. (c) traffic. Depending on where you are working, you are likely to leave home by 4 or 5am and get back by 10pm. Though BRT covers almost everywhere in Lagos now. Hence reduces the burden of traffic. But it's not a substitute for traffic.

If he stays in rural areas in Ikorodu, he will get a single room at 60k. Self-contained at 135k, 2 bedroom flat at 350k. These figures will double in d first year. D problem is your job will most like be outside Ikorodu. Hence falling into the trap of 4am to 10pm.

On tge bright side, he has the opportunity of getting a better pay job in Lagos than the 130k that is bringing him over. Finally, if u want to live a gentle life, stay in ur location. But if u want to push your career and live in the fast lane, come.

If he us single, he could share the rent with a roommate. Some companies offer accommodation. Others offer lunch. But he will need a thick skin. Imagine coning home by 10pm after u left by 4am? The next day, u repeats it.

* Accommodation very cheap

* Food stuff available in abundant

* And lastly, transportation not a big deal

Bonus....
insecurity is somehow curtail over here, I've lived in Zaria for close to 20yrs now, I know what I'm saying
Some people deserve to suffer. Just see how people will ignore this post from a "lived in Zaria for close to 20yrs now" and start believing some ignorant fools who've never been North claiming they will kidnap and blow them up.

Thanks for this post.

I love the fact you bothered to analyse as you've done. Its detailed and very informative.

Just that bold bit.

All you people in Lagos let me never hear say you are unemployed or looking for work because you've read it here you have the "opportunity of getting a better pay job in Lagos than the 130k that is bringing him over"!

Anyone without a better paid job already must please contact the person quoted.

Powersurge, I hope you don't mind, lol.

Difficult choice oh, zaria is not under threat from bandits as other cities in kd. I think Kaduna is more peaceful than most states with large population of Christians and muslims.

That 80k in zaria would take you a long long way. I dont know how lagos life is but I'm sure it's somewhat similar to what we face here in Accra. Things are expensive. 130k may feel like 50k in lagos but 80k in zaria is like 200k. I miss naija, it's in my options to accept defeat and return shouldthings not go well for me here. maybe I can make still make something out of it.
Being isolated, i.e like I am now is also another disadvantage. You are very familiar with the in and outside of zaria already. Lagos lifestyle might be frustrating for you.

After all these said, some say it is good to get out of your comfort zone.. well, it hasn't worked yet for me but who knows, you might make a better plan and decision than I did

You better tell that your friend to stay in that Zaria, he would grow well and save well if he knows what he's doing...

If you check my last thread, you will see where I said I had to drag salary with my boss, because alot of things has gone up... when others are selling things cheap in other state, legos would increase it...

Despite the fact that I'm earning very strong 6digit, my wife had to stay in abeokuta in a very clean 3bedroom flat with just two tenant for 250k, with a very spacious compound that can park 6 cars and the two flat has their own water tank.. (Though she works in Abeokuta)

I stay in my family house in Lagos for free and free food.... transport is only what I spend on...

If you want to rent that in Lagos, you will end up spending all your salary on it, with two years rent and very high agreement and commission...

Better tell him to stay in that his Zaria....
Where in Abeokuta will you get that kind of accomodation?

let him move to lagos and make it. Nollywood doesn't act movies about villagers going to the city to make it for nothing. It is real. If he has dreams let him relocate to lagos. If he is timid let him remain in zaria

Please let him stay in zaria, Zaria comes with a lot of advantages, good education, a very good place to raise a family and who said zaria is small?? What I like most is no stress, u can leave ur house 5 or 10 minutes to ur appointment and still meet up. The lack of exposure is true dough, Zaria makes everything so easy that when u leave to bigger place, u will struggling to catch up.
