Good day Nairalanders, I need your advice.
I had an encounter with a police officer yesterday along Ibadan-Abeokuta road. I will keep it brief and concise.

I boarded a bus from Ibadan to Abeokuta yesterday afternoon. Somewhere around Odeda, our bus was stopped at a police check point. I was apprehended by the officer who asked me to unlock my phone for him. I did as instructed and next he called me a cyber criminal without any evidence to proof. He immediately demanded I paid him 500k or I will be arrested and detained. I told him I can give him only 5k because I had a very important thing to do and I wouldn't want him to waste any of my precious time. The officer agreed and eventually I gave him cash of 3k because he didn't accept transfer for obvious reasons.

Before he searched my phone, he seized my bag and a nylon containing my shoes and my iPhone usb cord.

I unfortunately missed my bus because of delay, so I needed to board another bus immediately, so the officer helped me to stop a bus. He then handed me my bag and nylon. I was so pissed off and tried to cool off my head with a short nap. On getting to Abeokuta, I checked if the contents of my bag and nylon was intact but to my greatest surprise, I found a big android phone belonging to the police officer inside the nylon instead of my shoe and usb. He had unfortunately giving me a wrong nylon containing his own phone.

I have the phone with me now and I'm sincerely not willing to give it back. He has been calling and I don't know if I should change my mind.

What should I do guys? I'm confused.
Check well, the phone may not belong to the police officer...

Throw the phone away, he will charge you for robbery. Funny enough I have seen something like this in the police station or at most give it to a blind begger lipsrsealed grin before they track you

Do not ask the officer to send or transfer money to you through POS or any medium as advised by some persons here. The account details you send will be used to track or trace you. As the man may deal with you seriously.

As for the phone, do not sell it neither should you use the phone, less you are tracked.
Re: A Police Officer's Phone Is In My Custody, Should I Return It? by Remman(m): 8:43pm On Feb 02, 2022
There's an advanced tracking device used only by law enforcement agents. This device has a tracker that will put a call to a phone number and once it goes through, it will lock the location. You won't even notice the call or any signal effect on the phone. What the lock does is that even if you off the phone and remove the sim and fly to another country, the device will tell you exactly where the phone is, even if you disassemble the phone and remove the battery, in as much as your location was locked, there's no way to hide that particular phone. It's now left for the security agents to gather intelligence on how to grap you but no matter the time taken, they'll get you. Kanu's direct phone number must have been exposed and this tracker was used on it to lock its location. The DSS has it and there's nobody whose phone can go through & this tracker has locked its location that can escape. The best way is to throw away the phone in a river and relocate as soon as possible but you can still be caught in time.

Tell him to transfer that 3k back use a POS agent for the transfer. About the phone do whatever you wish.
And you think the account details he will send for the transfer to go through will not be used against him right?

Your suggestion is so implicating.
You have a shallow mind.

Those cops are bastards. Please don't return the phone. It's an Android phone, once you flash it and erase the information, it can't never be tracked. He used 3k to give away his phone.
Even iphone 13 wey we pay 40k for to track, the police couldn't track it, not to talk of useless android.

Just dump his sim into the nearest river or dusbin.

If you try and return it, he can rope you and arrest you. Person wey wan extort you for nothing before. He would now have all the power to arrest you if you dare return that phone.

He probably siezed it from an innocent who couldn't pay his bail on something the innocent didn't do.

Then, sell the phone off or you can start using it. You are safe.

By the way, check if he has a Facebook page, I'll dm you now. I need his Facebook name/details/contact information and where he stays.
Most of those bagas put that on their Facebook page.

Most of the people that are telling you to return it haven't been extorted by the police before, they don't know what it's like to be accused and robbed for something you didn't do.
They didn't want to track it. Probably, the thieves are protected by the Police. There is no phone that Police can not track. If you like flash it they will still track. Put it off they will still track it.

The policeman probably took the phone from evidence, or phone siezed from someone who couldn't bail himself or phone confiscated from armed robbers that they caught or bought it from a show glass. I doubt he wrote down the IMEI for it to be tracked. Even if he wants to track the android phone, he would have to go to headquarters or IRT base in the state. and he would pay his fellow police officers nothing less than 30k for that. Except he knows the O.C personally.

The best advice which I would appreciate if you can do is get the press involved. I can connect you for a press conference and he must meet you at commissioner's office to collect his phone. Don't ever give him the phone directly.
After that what next? The policeman might be dismissed but he will kill him later.

For your own good, don't heed to deceitful counsel that you should keep or sell the phone. Return the phone the earlier the better. These policemen use diabolical means if they really want to find something or someone. Besides that's the only way you can get your misplaced nylon bag back.

He might have done that intentionally. You have two safe options
1. Destroy the phone (don't throw it away as it might implicate someone else)
2. Return the phone safely i.e if he calls just text him on how he will get the fone back with his number . Don't attempt to have a face to face encounter with him. Or take the phone to the nearest police station

This is a complicated issue. Don't trust the police, he can implicate you. Worst is that he can lock u up or m****r u and tag u a criminer...if he really mean harm, he will track you clean.

All lost phones, if u settle police well they will track it neat

Locate a police hq and report ur case.

I will advice you to return the phone but not to him directly, report the issue at a police division hq and ask him to be invited with ur own belongings.
