I called John Lewis to confirm why this happened and the customer service rep told me that it’s probably because I used paypal but I should either try again or pay at once. I decided to try again, same PayPal and the same thing happened. Now here’s where it got interesting, I randomly decided to go through my LinkedIn and noticed that a staff of John Lewis in their frauds department had gone through my LinkedIn Profile. I didn’t think anything of it and since I needed a new laptop urgently, I decided to just pay at once and order it with my debit card, which I did and approved the payment on my Barclays app. However the same thing happened again; I was rejected a third time. So the fact that a staff from their frauds department went through my page and I still got rejected a third time is giving me signals that they concluded that I must be a fraudster or something perhaps because I’m black African because how do I get rejected a third time for trying to pay for a service with instant debit from my account that has more than enough funds for the laptop. I’ve spoken to John Lewis about this and about a staff from their fraud unit going through my LinkedIn page and they keep feigning clueless and they said they’ll contact me but they haven’t. My friend thinks I should speak to a lawyer about it but I think that’s a bit intense. Should I just ignore and move on from this or should I report this as consumer discrimination. I’m confused.

Your transaction was most likely declined the first time due to an automated check that takes place when you apply for credit, which is what PayPal's 3 in 1 is, irrespective of whether the PayPal account is tied to a debit or a credit card. Thereafter, a human being probably took a look at the situation and decided to uphold that decision, and that's probably why the subsequent transactions were also declined.

Of course, the grounds for deciding to uphold the decision can be questioned (if na Mr. John Smith instead of Mazi Emeka Okoro, wouldn't you have given the transaction a second chance?), but how provable that could be is anyone's guess.

Obviously only someone who works in a fin services fraud department can speak to the generally used methods in such cases, but regarding the appropriateness of their looking at your LinkedIn profile, my opinion is that since it is public, there is nothing wrong done by accessing publicly available information. I look at LinkedIn profiles all the time, and even when it is not specifically a recruitment situation concerning an job seeker.

No-one really knows what algorithms they use for determining how much credit to give to people, so it is possible that the "computer" decided that 800 quid in 3 instalments was too much for them to give you, or out of character from your previous pattern of spending or that you're using it too frequently or whatever. Whatever the case, if you've got any other major transactions you want to charge, I'd advise you get a purchase credit card with a reasonably long interest-free period and put it on that.

Funny enough, I figured that was the case, the purchase was probably too large even though they locked the total of the amount in my account and left it on pending. Also might I add that going through someone’s profile on a third party app such as a Social media app goes against UK’s data protection policy under GDPR. I work in customer service and if I did that and they found out, I would be fired.

That may be the case in your customer service role, but as I earlier pointed out, it might not be the case in fraud prevention, and we don't know what methods they are authorized to use when conducting their investigations. Where they were not authorized to view your public profile in this instance, it would be a very incompetent person who would have left that trail for you to see and I would happily write out a dismissal letter for them right now were it to be my organisation.

Book to London then use National Express Coach to Leeds for £20 or less. National Express has an office in Heathrow or you book online. A train would be more expensive

Yes, Wakanow is okay, from my experience.

Bonus: Spouse's earnings can be life saving if she won't mind working, although, I don't mean you should marry for the extra income o.

Ah well, they themselves acknowledged that it’s not standard nor appropriate practice when I complained and they asked for the name of the staff. I’ve filed a formal complaint on email and will await the outcome. Thanks for speaking from an informed perspective and from wisdom. I Appreciate

You can either contest it (by writing to them), as you were told by a staff to board the next train or you pay up and save yourself stress.

Can train station (Network Rail) staff bind a train company (Cross Country)? I don't think so.
I've had a train cancelled a couple of times (same TransPennine, on my way from Manchester to Edinburgh, I think they're having issues on that route), and the first thing I did was to call them and they said to board any TransPennine train. When I pointed out that there was none going direct, they told me to get a ticket for any train service, then apply to them for a refund of the extra monies I paid. They didn't tell me to just jump on any train, obviously that can't be done, so even if the Network Rail staff did say that, it's not tenable.

Data Protection Act 2018 lists all that customer data can be used for

If he can go through it, he will see what data controllers can do with his information and decide if to sue or not
