If you're that bothered with non-Nigerian reports, then the obvious thing to do is to ignore them. Untill Seun makes Nairaland exclusively for Nigerians living in Nigeria, or Nigerians only, non-Nigerian contributions will continue.

Try to broaden your way of thinking, there's a wealth of knowledge and experience out there, and not all in any particular country either. wink

Siena: Replacing oil and filter on a monthly basis is way too frequent. Even for vehicles driven hard in very dusty regions, twice per year is more than enough.

A liter of benzin in Germany is at €1.65, so i need about 70 liters a month that is roughly €115,50. 2 times washing in a month so i do that myself, simply drive to the automart do the washing and hovering myself for less than €3, so i will say i spend less than 25k on my car every month not that much.

Bros the thing sef baffle me,I change oil once every two/three months.
If one uses the appropriate engine oil specified for a particular model of car there will be no need of changing oil or replacing oil filter every month, people should buy the right oil for their cars no matter the cost as those roadside engine oil can wear car engine away.

regarding cost of going and returning from work, i reside in Akoka area of yaba and i work in Lekki, patronizing BRT lagbuses has subsidized and stabilized my transport cost since it costs me only 200naira from my bus-stop in abule-oja,yaba to ikate round-about in lekki.returning is a little tricky but i take the danfo to TBS,board Lagbus to barracks and spend around 100naira back home.so daily total gives (50+50+100+100+70+100)470naira or peak 500naira.i leave my house @ 6:30am and i make the 8am resumption time.i get home after COW @ 5 around 7:30-8pm.so this is a very nice alternative. thanks for reading.....

Find Out!:
I share the same feelings boss. No matter hw poor quality our engine oil here may be (coz in naija, people can do anythn to cut corners. Even d known brands MAY not meet up to the specificatns they claim if tested), i think 4 times a year maximum is alrite, except the engine is already going downhill.

Comments?

If the engine's already on the way out, changing the oil so frequently won't help, it's just wasting money. It's actually more beneficial in such cases, to leave the oil in as long as possible, so it gets thick and black. A knocking engine will be quieter with dirty, thick oil. Many knocking engine have lasted over 6,000 miles with careful driving, and simply topping up the oil. And many of these worn engines have expired immediately after an oil change, smashing rods through the block.

Find Out!:

Now, question is, how dyu know u r due for an oil change?

The popular indicator most people use (especially for cars without the oil life meter) is the oil colour. If too black, we feel it needs to be changed.

Comments?

My Audi S8 and BMW 120d M-Sport both have service indicators, the Audi A4 has one too. For cars without, you simply go by mileage. If the manufacturer indicates every 12,000 miles, that's what you go bo. So once it's serviced, you either take note of the mileage, or zero the trip meter (most Japmobiles have trip A and B so use just A). Once the trip approaches the 12,000 mark, then a service is due. Or on cars without trip meter, once the mileage you recorded at the last service approaches the additional 12,000 miles, a service is due.

The colour of the oil is NOT an accurate indicator as to when a service is due. Oil goes black due to three major factors - minute metal particles, dust that gets past the air filter (those running without air filters, take note!!) and contamination from the fuel. In the case of a diesel engine, sulphur present in diesel will darken the oil within a week. This does not mean an oil change is due weekly! A brand new engine will also have more internal friction, so the oil will get dark much earlier than an older engine that's been run-in. If the car is driven hard, and does more than 12,000 miles per year in dusty conditions, then you can make your servicing once every 6 months. Not monthly, or quarterly. Your car will cost you an absolute fortune to run otherwise, with no real benefit.

Spark plugs, fuel filter and pollen (cabin) filters (if fitted) are due every other service, so typically once every 18,000 miles approx. Air filters should be replaced every oil and filter change, due to dusty conditions.

chibabe3: Portharcourt to Choba a distance of 12km for work and I am using a QX4. N7000 fuel per week. Servicing once in 3 months at a cost of N5000, Other repairs in a month N5000. A spend between N30000 to N35000 a month. I am hoping to get a Corolla soon as the cost is getting high.

Sounds like my expenses, though yours is an suv and mine's a normal car,

Bros, even if you be Wakajugbe sef wey dey drive moto from Yola go Las Gidi every two days, no mean say you go dey change engine oil d way you dey do am, hehehe. wink

On a serious note, it's pointless changing engine oil, without replacing the filter. A dirty oil filter will contaminate the fresh oil as soon as you start the engine. The oil filter on most cars holds on average a quart of oil, which is not removed by draining. It's a false economy. If you change your oil and filter frequently, it should be no more than once every 6 months. Any more frequent is as good as putting your hard-earned money into a blast furnace, and watching it burn.

I just acquired a camry 1996 model from Nairaland last week. Just give me this month to get to know the ride. I will be back with story by next month. Btwn, the little I have observed about the car is not bad because I used about 25 litres of fuel from Ibadan to Ekiti last Wednesday, Even though I drove for more than 1hr within Ib before hitting the highway and the tank was empty before I bought thhe fuel.

In a month's time, I shall know more about the ride's consumption.

chucky234: Bros with our bad roads you don't any meter to remind you that your car is due for servicing ooo,12,000 miles you say?

Bro, you're confusing Routine Servicing with repairs outside the same. Bad roads won't not make your oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter and spark plugs degrade at a different rate. Any damage due to bad roads will need repairs. Servicing does not include replacing worn suspension components, wheel bearings or even brake pads. These are classed as "Additional Work", they may be checked during a major service, but do not constitute part of a service to replace these items.

These are regarded as "unexpected repairs / maintenance." If you have your Owner's Manual or Service Booklet, they'll tell you what constitutes Service, and what constitutes Maintenance. These are Maintenance issues, not Service ones.

Please auto guru's in the house i have a recurring problem; at 100km and above my car vibrates, when i step on the brakes hard, it makes a cranking noise and takes a while to stop albeit rigorous steering and wheel vibrations. i have done wheel alignment, balancing, changed the discs and brakes twice and the problem still there. i went for diagnostics but found nuffin wrong with the car? went to another mechanic and he still insists that i buy another disc, that the ones i bought were fake! some other dude say its the bearings! Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

^^^^Interesting. I've also heard stories about auto sub-systems similar to the above (about leaving old oil in dying engines alone). I've heard about old radiators which work well for years until you decide to flush and refill with fresh coolant/water, after which they suddenly develop leaks and you end up with a dry radiator and an overheated car. I have a related dilemma at the moment - my 4 year old RAV4's ATF has never been drained and the filter has never been changed either (to this day, the dealer still doesn't know if the transmission even has a filter angry ). Not sure what the outcome will be if I drain/flush the ATF and change the filter - even smoother shifting or an open can of gearbox worms? sad

Much depends on how well the flush is done. My take is, if an auto tranny hasn't had a fluid and filter change in over 80,000 miles, leave it well alone. There will be deposits, which are benign. Once you dislodge them, they drop down into the oil pan, are sucked up into the fine passages in the valve body. The result? A dead tranny, that won't start from first and second, so stuck in third.

My only issue now is if i decide not to change anything, then what happens a few years from now when the ATF is fully degraded and the filter is fully clogged - total transmission failure? I intend to keep the car for at least 3 more years. A new transmission will not be cheap so i'm walking a fine line here.
