How come the ones already settled in the UK before this set didn't come become such? Maybe bad 'ol racism considering how Britain supported Apartheid etc.

I would not chalk it up to racism.

The first black member of the House of Lords was Lord Learie Constantine. He was appointed a life peer in 1969. At about the time the expulsions of the East African Asians started.

The EA Asians were already pretty successful. In Uganda, under Idi Amin, they paid 90% of taxes while being less than 10% of the population.

That's why Idi wanted them out and handed their properties and establishments to blacks. Similar to what Mugabe did to whites in Rhodesia.

When the EA Asians went to the UK, unlike in East Africa, they made a conscious effort to become politically active. Kinda like the Jews did after centuries of expulsions.

Nigerians do not yet have those motivations. Na money carry us go there. And our first wave of emigrants were not of the same profile as EA Asians. I like to think of them as trailblazers. Like the first wave of Asian emigrants to the US. It's the latter, more recent waves and their progenies that are killing it.

Why do you say "this generation of Nigerians are a lost cause...?" Also, which generation in particular? About the progeny, I recall Ednut1 writing some became LGBTQ, others developed mental illness kini kon, some relocated to the US for greater opportunities and others were average. I also recall Areafada2 saying his children's contemporaries get to attend Imperial College, King's College, LSE and with the education are set for life. Then brother Sukkot says majority don turn knife stabbers. grin

So e get as e be.

Because successive generations of Nigerians are incapable of nation building. It is too complex for them.

Are they individually intelligent? Yes.
Will they excel in careers and small businesses? Absolutely.
Do they have what it takes to radically transform a country so it runs smoothly and efficiently? LOL.

All generations are like this. And I do not see us organically developing that capability. The trial and error path will take centuries not decades.

About the varied outcomes with progenies, that is to be expected. But look at India. Where do I start?

The country is fundamentally changing and that's primarily because of their most prolific export, human capital. Make no mistake, there are still millions without toilets. Flooding in a lot of their cities are as perennial as they are in Nigeria.

Part of the country is like the developed world. Parts are like middle income countries. Yet other parts are like Burundi. And this is a country with unbelievable corruption and cronyism, a bureaucracy that make the Nigerian civil service seem like SpaceX, and an historical caste system that make tribalism in Nigeria seem a liberal utopia.

Yet, after Indians leave. Their progenies, after you discount those lost to Western indoctrination and hazards, overwhelmingly force change in their homeland. Without that exposure, they'd be 30 years behind where they are currently, even with the advantage of their location in Asia and huge population.

Over here, we need all the help we can get. The Obidient mania reflected the intellectual limitations of Nigerians. If that didn't scare you, nothing will.

I'm actually happy for this, but our people should learn to be realistic and focus on the economics and what took them there. They shouldn't expect the same cultural heritage. They should just focus on the koko. I'm actually glad I created that thread as it puts me on focus too. Lets me wetin carry me come here.

💯

This amounts to a fking bullsheet summation of what is instead my existence. I came to the USA carrying depression in my head so my struggles with mental illness had nothing to do with any of my actual experiences here in the US but the fact that I had a severally depressed brain right from living in Nigeria. Fortunately, I eventually found treatment and worked on my mind and life. And just when it began to overwhelm me, I found the solution to it all and freedom from all mental delusions since then. undecided

You live with it or take the next available flight to Nigeria. Alternatively, you ensure things work well in Nigeria so that you enjoy your cultural heritage and live in prosperity.

Do not discredit depression in the west. It's a real thing bro. Just like people think postpartum depression is a scam. Even Americans are feeling lonely, unmotivated and tired of one thing or another. I noticed anyone that narrate their experience abroad is y'all enemies, except he or she is praising abroad or narrating how he was able to save $1M per year or how he Japa through Libia. If you could understand and willing to hear from the narrative of people that claim to earn $3M per year working at McDonalds, why not understand people whose experience are the opposite? This goes to show we're selective in what we want to hear as far as it does or doesn't appeal to our beliefs

Again, the point here is that this issue of depression is behavioral and if you don't tackle it on an individual level, probably through changes in behavior and mindset, you will never be free of it. undecided

I am not discounting anyone's experiences. I am only saying since they willingly relocated to the abroad, they should focus on the reason that made them do so. If they have attained what took them there, they can always move back to Nigeria. I find it ridiculous when Nigerians complain that abroad is too boring or bland or depressing because of the differences in cultural activities. What were they expecting? A Nigerian-like scenario over there?

Anyone who wants to enjoy his cultural activities should stay back in his/her country. No one was forced to relocate. This is the same way some Muslims move to European countries and start demanding Sharia laws. If you so much like Sharia laws, why didn't you move to where those laws are implemented?

Alternatively, you build your society to your taste and dictate how things should be done. That is how the Chinese have done in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. For instance, the Hong Kongers who were invited by the British government to live in the UK because of the new laws in Hong Kong, more than 40K returned after one year out of close to 160K applicants. More are still returning to Hong Kong. Why? They complain of the cost of living, poor weather, high taxes, different cultures etc. They willingly returned to Hong Kong, some to Singapore. It is that simple: if you don't like it, move to Africa!

You think when I have attained what I want and abroad tire me, I would stay put or whine as these folks do? No, I would not. They have built their societies to their tastes. It is either I fit in or move out. The last thing I would do is complain about how another man runs his house when I still reside there because mine isn't OK.

zrocky:
na people like you go say person where dey depressed should suck it in instead of speaking out. Go and relax jare. Even oyibo dey complain about depression talkless of foreigner

Oyibo can complain because it is his country. You as the immigrant complaining, have an option - move back to Nigeria. If you want your environment to be what you want culturally and prosperous simultaneously, ensure you vote for the right leaders.

Thank you.

I do agree with you here. It really brings out one's fighting/competitive spirit because you know home isn't good, and you have to better yourself. In other words, no room for complacency. Me sef don dey multi-task than I did in Nigeria. My mom is even surprised I can speak the language whereas I couldn't even speak her language even though I had knowledge of hers.

Developed countries are pressure valves, you're correct.
