what capacity?
250cc these are great bikes for beginners as they are more forgiving than larger engine bikes
400cc these are slightly larger than 250cc but not so popular anymore as their advantages over 250's are negligible and disadvantages
from 600's have basically buried them
600cc
750cc Good enough not to be outgrown quick
1000cc and bikes above this?

What form factor?
Sport bike with full fairing, naked, bikini fairing or half fairing (that is the dressings and plastic covers on bikes)
Tourer
Mountain or Dirt Bike

If you have never ridden a bike of any sort before (including jinchengs or the likes) then i'd advise you go for the 2012 honda cbr 125cc before the suzuki gsxr 250cc.
^^^^Those bikes are better suited for beginners and will help you garner enough experience before moving on to a bigger bike.
Some school of thoughts posit the 400cc bikes as excellent beginner bikes, and while i have seen some people start out on a 600cc motorcycle with no problems or incidents: the amount of people that started out on the 600cc/higher capacity motorcycles with gory, awful and unfortunate tales of incidents and/or accidents are far far far, far... (*) far more.

But what's wrong with a Kawasaki Ninja 250r (2008- onwards) for a first timer?.....

My only grouse with 125cc to 250cc's are that they'd be outgrown in no time, and you'd soon be wanting more uuummmmmph!...

Detuned sport touring 600cc's like the Katana, SV650, Ninja 650, Hornet 600, FZ6r are good too for beginners....

If it must be the Sportbikes (600cc only), the 2008-onwards Suzuki GSX600R is it for moi...cos of the 3 selectable power bands on offer....
