Your most viable options are: 1. As a person who can teach Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics, you are a very hot cake and even though private schools managements in Nigeria are generally mean, there are still few out there that are reasonable enough to appreciate you for these subjects and never play with your occupational welfare. So look out for another school. But it is important that when you are in the process of searching for another school, you don't present yourself as desperately looking for that job as that is usually the foundation of the disdain and ill treatment you will later get from the management. 2. Find a way to be self employed. Going by my own personal experience, I can boldly say that your residing in Lagos is already an advantage in regard to this because Lagos is practically the only city in Nigeria where your skills sell fast especially if you are excellent in those skills. 2. 3 Likes |

I am very sorry to hear this at @OP. We have been discussing this issue for a while and the unfortunate part is that most of these school owners have bribed the regulators (Ministry of Education and other agencies). I am waiting for someone to tell me that a particular private school other than the ones in Lekki its environs (3M per term school fee) remitted staff statutory deductions (Pension, PAYE, NHF, HMO, etc.) in the last 12 months. Funnily, they know how to pray and glorify the Lord in their various religion affiliations. Like the popular 'Portable' quote, 'Person wey go help you no go stress you'. It is high time that the Government intervened in the evaluation of the compliance level of these 'evil' proprietors/proprietress to the law of the land. But are they going to enforce it? 4 Likes |

AKWATGOLD1: It is a private school There is NOTHING Ministry of Education can do about it. At most they would write the school or advice the mgt on what to do. But at the end it is the teachers that would suffer for it. |

You are not being honest, you need to tell us your actual salary if you cannot mention the name of the school. But to be honest with you, there is nothing you can do, the good thing for yourself is to leave the job, and I sincerely advise you to do. Working for someone who you do not like or you consider that he is mean to you is unhealthy for you. It causes you to become devil as you are revengeful and seek for downfall of your boss. Your bitterness cannot take you forward, so you better leave and give yourself peace of mind. 3 Likes |

Bro I feel your pain o But all these school owners, proprietor/proprietress, school directors are slave drivers even mission owned ones. I that is still in the profession is doing it for the joy I derive in teaching. This is the only profession that is least paid. And the insults one get from parents, colleagues, learners, bosses no be here No body to regulate laws NUT is only concerned about the public schools alone. If you are moving from one school to another It is not good for your CV. Telling from a sister's experience. To the glory of God, I know who I am and what I stand for. I don't take cheat from anyone. |

Teaching in certain private schools has become a source of frustration for educators, with underlying issues exacerbating the situation. A particularly alarming concern is the prevalence of exam malpractice orchestrated by some unscrupulous proprietors. This unethical practice not only compromises the integrity of education but is also a means for these proprietors to justify exorbitant school fees charged to parents. However, the challenges extend beyond exam malpractice. Some proprietors fail to recognize the dedication and hard work of teachers, evident in their refusal to compensate during holidays. Such practices not only contribute to financial insecurity for educators but also create an environment where the passion for teaching is overshadowed by discontent and dissatisfaction. In light of these issues, a collective call for reform within the private education sector becomes imperative. It is crucial for stakeholders, including educators, parents, and regulatory bodies, to advocate for ethical practices, transparency, and a genuine commitment to providing quality education. Proprietors must be held accountable for their actions, ensuring that the primary focus remains on fostering an environment conducive to learning and personal growth. In conclusion, the challenges faced by educators in certain private schools highlight the need for comprehensive reform in the sector. Examining and rectifying unethical practices, fostering a commitment to education over financial gain, and advocating for the well-being of teachers are crucial steps in ensuring the integrity and quality of private school education. It is a collective responsibility to pave the way for an educational landscape that prioritizes learning, integrity, and the holistic development of students. 1 Like |

To tell the truth, many of us in this situation are the enables. You spend N1200 daily, that's around N26,500 monthly. Why enter a venture where you're not gaining? And with people who don't even respect you. How much is left after transportation? It's as good as being unemployed. At least, those who are unemployed can find a profitable task that will pay for their time. I will advice that you leave. This is slavery. Respect yourself enough not to take this. If there weren't people willing to go through this, no employer will do this to their staff. Since you teach maths, use social media to market yourself as one. Take a menial job for the meantime if need be. Focus on advertising yourself to the right people as a lesson teacher. Research the rates people are willing to pay per day. There are teachers who do this in this country and live well off their efforts. You have an extraordinary skill, teaching mathematics. Take advantage of this. Make a plan to set yourself up for success. It won't be easy but it would be worth it. 4 Likes |

Adebayofficial: Forget the certificate, it's the experience that counts. When you can prove that you know what you're teaching and you market yourself properly, many parents will contact you. As far as I am concerned, you are much better than a graduate who studied mathematics education since you've practicing for 6 years. Just believe in yourself. Find a way to demonstrate yourself by teaching some students free for a month. If you prove yourself, their parents will pay you. Do you know how many people complain about how bad their children are in mathematics? Leave this site and look for those complaints. Then find a way to contact them and offer your services. Forget the certificate. Prove you have the knowledge. It won't be easy, that I know. But it will be worth it on the long run. |
