Bad Plantain Chips Rumour: NAFDAC Investigates Melting Rubber Into Oil by HeatSeeker(m): 3:16pm On Jan 21
By Chioma Obinna

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, on Saturday, said it is launching an investigation into the reported conversion of polyethylene (rubber) into edible oil.

NAFDAC made this known in a statement by its Resident Media Consultant, Mr. Tayo Akintola.

It said the investigation became necessary following a viral social media report regarding the conversion of polyethylene into edible oil.

The statement reads in part: ”The attention of the management of NAFDAC has been drawn to viral posts making the rounds on social media where an individual was reporting the alleged frying of plantain chips by a woman who, before she grated the plantain into the hot oil, melted about five of the white polyethylene, what we call ‘Olonka rubber’, into the oil.

“NAFDAC is a responsible and responsive regulatory authority guided by science.

“In this regard, the Agency is taking a science-based approach in her response to the alleged claim and will conduct necessary laboratory investigation into the claim.

“In the meantime, our advice to the public who consume NAFDAC-regulated food products, remains the same and centres around being vigilant as a consumer:

1) Purchase from a reputable source.

2) Check for the NAFDAC Registration Number of the product on the label/package as a sign that it is approved by NAFDAC.

3) Stay away from the product if the packaging looks suspect or compromised.

4) Stay away from the product if there is any objectionable smell or colour.

5) Exercise caution if the price at which the product is being offered for sale is much cheaper than similar products.

We use this medium to re-assure the public that the Agency is proactive and remains alive to her responsibilities of safeguarding the health of the public and that a thorough investigation of the alleged claim will be conducted,” the NAFDAC statement added.

I have come to realize that Nigerians are fast thinkers, to beat a Nigerian person you have to think faster and know their next thinking plan be it good or bad.
Imagine such a devilish idea. Ulcer is rampant then you will begin to reason I feed well, I don't Stay hungry, I take my medication as prescribed, still the test says i have ulcer.
It's so disheartening.

Please watch out what you eat and send home to your family.

Good one from NAFDAC.

Always proactive and up to their job description.

They didn't have to wait for a formal report to be made. They promptly acted on the viral report before we start recording fatalities.

The upsurge in blood cancers, renal and hepatic malignancies may be attributed to some of these poisons we consume in some of these regulated products.

Kudos to Gen. Marwa and the boys

If not evil with an atom of wickedness how can someone melt a polythene bag into an oil and use same oil for the production of chips. The heart of man is evil indeed.

This is a gain to reputable organization but trust average Nigerians they don't care because already government is f.ucking them. Roadside chip will still be consume.

Seriously NAFDAC is really trying to stop fake products of consumables from Nigeria market, But Nigeria standard organization are not doing any work that is why fake products full Nigeria market from iron to plastics to building materials that was why building fall every day in Nigeria and they blame it on contractors handling such projects.

I don't believe that's possible because after cooling off, the fried plantain with the melted polythene rubber will solidify and become not just visible on the plantain chips but have a chaffed rubber feel when consumed. Chemistry 101.

This is good approach from NAFDAC, but they can do more. They can periodically take random sample of this and other consumables being sold in the traffic and marketplace for analysis to save the nation. Some of these compromised foods that has been consumed overtime is a time bomb for future diseases which our medical teams here may not be able to help.

Just see what bad economic policies have caused Nigerians.

A five litres of vegetable oil now goes for between 9-10k.

Government should just open boarders and allow essential commodities to come in so that Nigerians don't die of hunger.

Waste of time.
Melt polythene into anything and it'll come back to being polythene when cooled.
Except someone eats plantain chips and finds a layer of polythene on it, this is just another waste of government money.

Many Nigerians are school goers and are not educated in the real sense of it.

Scientifically, melting rubber in oil doesn't change it from going back to its form when it is cooled.
They are not even miscible even at any temperature, talk more when cooled.

There is no way you won't have or see that rubber properties when eating it, so the rubber properties suddenly disappeared abi?

Well, make them sef use this avenue see money chop as government agency wey dem be.
