It is saddening to hear about the untimely death of the CEO of Access Holding alongside his wife and son May their souls rest in peace. I pray that God will give the entire family left behind the fortitude to bear the loss. He was a gentleman and highly intelligent. He was a soft-spoken man with impressive intellect. He has contributed immensely his quota to the growth and development of Access Bank since 2002. I will not pass by without extending my condolences to the entire family of the former group chairman of NGX group, Abimbola Ogunbajo who met his untimely death through the same crashed helicopter that killed Access Bank CEO.

Apart from Ghana and South Africa, I don't see which country Nigerians prefer charging less than that for foreign students (undergraduate). In fact, with the reduction of foreign students' slots by most Western countries, the option pool declines further. The places where 15K USD would go a long way as a foreign undergraduate from Nigeria are: South American countries, Japan and South Korea. I don't see the point of studying in India as it is a stoopid option. Malaysia would have been better, but offers fewer post-school opportunities. To get visa to Eastern European universities na war.

Wigwe University (its name) would thrive. Unlike the American University of Nigeria (owned by Atiku), which is located in the north, his is in the south (the source of students eager to study and parents willing to spend).

OkoEmm:

Wigwe university. Its currently under construction in rivers state. They are to start the first ever session in September 2024.

I agree with you. The major reason why Nigerians go abroad to school is more about the benefits anout schooling abroad such as work study programs, employment after school, security, networking. etc.

But students are currently in Madonna, IU in Benin, AUN, Landmark, CU, ABUAD, Babcock etc. It would have customers. In fact, those who could have gone to AUN would study there. Baze is thriving to date. Wigwe's influence would make the graduates acceptable in corporate Nigeria, as Access Bank doesn't employ graduates from most state universities. The future is bright. As our private universities grew in strength, reputation and the naira plummeted, few Nigerians went to Ghana. So, the tale about studying abroad because of work study is weak as most are postgraduate students. Mind you, the university doesn't need plenty of applicants sef. See my comments about getting visa to Eastern Europe, which was a major competitor to private universities in Nigeria. Except for the uber-rich, very few families sponsor their children to foreign universities as undergraduates.

I agree with you. You made some solid points especially on the siting of the university in Southern Nigeria where you find the highest purchasing power of Nigerians.

On the flipside. You mentioned my university. I graduated from Abuad(Afe Babalola Uni). As at then our fees was 1.5m per annum(2 bed accommodation) for civil engineering 2015 but i heard now its like 2-3m or so.

Thanks for agreeing, as it is logical. As for ABUAD, the demand is there. I have stated on Nairaland as far back as 2017 that Covenant University (currently highest ranking private university) would be Nigeria's Harvard in the future. As long as public universities continue to decline in quality and with the attendant social issues, many parents will send their children to private universities. So, the high ranking ones, of which ABUAD is a member, esp in Law, would see applicants soar. Our parents attended public secondary schools but sent us to private secondary schools. Then, a segment sent theirs to private universities and others to public universities. In the future, it would converge as we would send our children to private universities. The certainty is there that we are sending our children to private secondary schools.

Gerrard59:
The future is private universities. Most millennials' parents attended public schools, but they (milennials) attend(ed) private schools - from primary to secondary, and to extent, increasingly, universities. In the future, these millennials' children will attend private universities. How many people are willing to send their kids to public schools these days (primary to secondary)?

However, this is not how things should be in a well-run nation. We're abdicating the responsibility of providing quality education to private individuals which is wrong as the vast majority of the populace will always attend public institutions. In a place like Singapore, the rich, middle class and lower class individuals attend public schools and public schools in saner places are where quality education is provided at affordable costs. Abdicating the responsibility of providing quality education to private individuals will get to the stage of the US where it is your economic background that will say if you're to obtain quality education and not your brain power. However, unlike the US where there are surfeit of scholarships and financial assistance, we don't have such here.

Will I send my kids to a private university if I remain in Nigeria? Affirmative! But is that how things ought to be? No. It should be that parents who desire to send their kids to private universities do so because they desire to, not because that is the only option of obtaining quality education for their wards.

The class war in the future will be epic to watch.

I suppose do open church grin

The news was on CNN...have you been to a game in the USA? Nope...so you have no clue. You do not need to be a huge celebrity to be celebrated. If they are informed for sure that they are headed to the Super Bowl, they may honor them by showing their pictures or a minute silence. Please, do not assume what you do not know. Thank YOU...he is the CEO of a Major Bank in Nigeria.

It's about the international image associated with a degree, not just the national image.

You can study in some of the cheapest and low rank uni in the UK, but because UK have a good international image, you would go far compare to someone that went to the best school in Nigeria.

That's precisely the angle I'm looking at it from.

In this regard, I'll choose to spend such money outside Nigeria, with the hope that I'll also naturalise through that medium. It's about killing 100 birds with one stone.

From a respectable qualifications, international experience, foreign connection, opportunity for naturalization, and to earn in hard currency, why would I spend such in Nigeria?

The big unis in nigeria that charges such have wealthy clients, that have foreign base. For example, I know at least three people here that prefer their children study in Nigeria.

Their kids are foreign citizens already, and some don't even know they are citizens. For example, I know this man that recently became a Netherlands citizen, and all his kids that haven't left Nigeria before got it too since they are under 18.

And the first son is in Babcock. That's just an example. So yea.

It doesn't matter who elects the banks, the thing is, the banks facilitate their crimes. If we truly want to trace where stolen funds end up, all we have to do is look at the perpetrators' bank statements. How do you think EFCC can trace looted funds? Through the damn banks bro. Only stupid looters hide money inside Ghana must-go.

I understand the aspect of naturalised citizens of Africa descent studying in Nigeria, but Nigerians in Nigeria who make their money from Nigeria would be unable to adequately fund for at least 4 years an undergrad in any European country going forward. This is assuming the student gets issued a visa to study. Those who can fund their children's tuition as undergrads would prefer the US/Canada. Eastern European countries were Nigerian private universities' biggest competitors. Anti-immigration sentiments, strict visa issuances and the decline in the dollar have eroded the gap they had over the likes of CU, Babcock and now Wigwe University.
