The desired pieces of the plant are usually planted 30–60 cm (11.8–23.6 in) deep in the soil and should generally be
planted at the end of the dry season or the beginning of the wet season. Plant spacing is dependent on the cultivar being planted. Frequent weeding is required until plants are tall enough to shade out competing plants and should be started about 6 weeks after planting. Plantains are fast growing and require the frequent addition of nutrients as well as additional irrigation in the dry season. Plantain is often grown alongside other crop plants with similar requirements, indeed, the young banana plants make excellent 'nurses' for other crops such as papaya or cocoa which can be grown very close to the young plantains.

What kind of soil must a farmer plant plantain to get good yields?

The farmer needs soil that retains water because plantains need water, that’s why plantain plantations here are irrigated. Local farmers may not have the means to carry out irrigation so they should look for soils that retain water, have a good humus layer and they should always improvise by incorporating animal manure to the soil to improve on the humus and texture of the soil to retain water.

Farmers complain that after a few harvests, plantains don’t do well, what’s the problem?

This is caused by nematodes and borers’ attacks which make plantains to dry off; all of these are soil pests. So, to control these pests a farmer needs to apply enamaticide twice a year. They can use MOCAP bastion and it will be good to have a permanent calendar. It is good to apply in April and again in September. If this is well followed, you will stop this effect. You know that the nematodes and borers attack plantains more, not bananas. That’s why banana stems which were cultivated by our parents long in the 50s are still surviving.

Can some body make plantain or banana farming a business in Nigeria?

Sure! Plantain/bananas growing is a big business in Nigeria. The first thing is that if you are going for mass production, you should look for a market. Here in Ikorodu Lagos, we have a ready market; we have the Mile2 market which is one of the biggest markets in the sub region because buyers come from all over Lagos etc to buy plantains and other food stuff. Because of this the demand for plantain seedlings is very high since people have realized that it is a big business and are ready to open big plantations. The main problem here is the suckers, so even if you go only into the multiplication of plantain and bananas seedlings, you will have the Market.

How can plantain suckers be sterilised before planting ?

After preparing your suckers, you treat them with both insecticides and fungicides. Use a sachet of any of this chemical in 15 litres of water, stir very well to avoid lumps, put the suckers already prepared for planting in the propagator for 10 minutes in the mixture. You can remove and put under a shade for 24 hours before planting.

A sucker is the lateral shoot that develops from the rhizome and usually emerges close to the parent plant. Farmers traditionally depend on this natural regeneration process to replace their Plantain plants. They often remove all the suckers on a mat, except for the one selected to replace the mother plant.

Conventional planting materials require less inputs and can be planted immediately in the field, unlike the more fragile tissue-culture plantlets, which need to be hardened before planting. Tissue-culture plantlets also require appropriate management practices right after being transplanted to the field

In order to have a very good yield, it is necessary to respect the planting distance and maintain the farm during its growth period. The ideal planting distance is 3 meters. Maintenance requires that you control weed, prone the plantain and use pesticides and fungicides. Fungi and pest affect the leaves and stem of the plantain and prevent nutrient uptake from the soil thus affecting the size of the plantain

Manuring plantains with a combination of poultry manure, household waste and woodash improved plantain growth, yield and establishment and greatly reduced infestation by borer weevils and nematodes

The application of 20 t/ha poultry manure (on a soil that is averagely fertile) within the first two months of transplanting or planting suckers might represent the optimum period for nutrient release and availability for the root uptake, which consequently will produce heavier bunches and their components as well as increase the fruit quality.

Proper application of poultry litter requires a nutrient management plan. A nutrient management plan is essentially a collection of best management practices that assures the appropriate use of animal manures and commercial fertilizers to provide crop nutrient requirements while simultaneously protecting surface and ground waters from over-application. In addition, crop production cost can be significantly reduced by effective use of this poultry farm product. Poultry litter has a calculated value of N 5,000 to N 7,000 per ton as a replacement for commercial fertilizers, depending on the individual farm circumstances and the equi-valent cost for commercial fertilizer nutrients.

Re: Plantain Sucker Planting Season by FarmBusiness(m): 9:38pm On Aug 27, 2014
The importance of selecting an appropriate site for manure applications cannot be overemphasized. Consideration of potential effects on the environment and neighbor relations when applying poultry manure can be very important to the success of any manure utilization program. Attention to details prior to spreading can potentially reduce problems in these areas and minimize adverse public relations. Some suggested practices for site selection are:

-Do not apply poultry litter to land that is too steep. Ideally, slopes of land should not be more than 10 to 15 percent.
Use sites as far away from surface waters as possible. When spreading in close proximity to surface waters, drainage ditches or wetlands, use either a 100-foot setback or a 35-foot vegetative buffer. Applications from wells must be maintained at a minimum of 100 feet.
-Use the P-Index to determine if your farm represents a high risk site for phosphorous runoff. For farms representing a high risk situation, use management practices that reduce this risk.
-Use sites that are as isolated as possible. The farther away from neighbors and public facilities the better. Out of sight often means out of mind.
-Pay attention to weather forecasts before spreading. Avoid spreading prior to heavy rains. Be aware of prevailing wind conditions and avoid spreading when it might have an impact on neighbors.
-Apply poultry litter when crops can best use the nutrients.

Care and maintenance of the plantation
The field should be kept reasonably free of weeds. In large plantations weeding is necessary during the first 4-5 months after planting. Grass should also be gathered around the plant as mulch. It is also recommended to use the following herbicides when the grass is about 10-20cm tall :
Mulching
This is a vital practice that will go a long way to :
- Limit the growth of weeds,
- Protect soil desiccation during the dry season
- Prevent erosion in farms on steep slopes
- Provide organic matter that enriches the soil

Removing unwanted suckers
Leave the best developed sucker after planting and at flowering, conserving the most vigorous sucker as the successor. Regularly destroy the other suckers. It is always advisable to allow two healthy suckers on the side that does not carry the bunch. If too many suckers are allowed, the cycle of the crop will be prolonged and this will lead to the bearing of small bunches.

Caring for bunches
- Propping, that is supporting the plant at flowering to carry the bunch
- Use a forked prop or a prop with a sharp-end to support the bunches

We plant plantain sucker
– Site selection, where to plant?
– Selecting the best varieties and seedlings
– Field design
– Layout of design in the field

• If you are planting a larger number of suckers then it makes sense to think carefully and plan the layout of the new field.

• To do so you have to take into account: planting density, number of trees, shade trees, slope of the field and windbreaks.

• Planting density refers to the number of trees you plant in a  given area.

• The planting density is influenced by:
– Size of the mature suckers (larger trees means lower planting density)
– Amount of maintenance you intend to do (higher planting density means higher maintenance, more pruning in particular)
– The soil fertility and if fertiliser will be applied every year (no fertiliser means higher planting density as trees will stay smaller)
Generally, the Plantain requires 10 to 12 months from planting to harvest.

The first priority to consider when planting Plantain is to use the proper soil. It is very important to use a well draining soil MIXTURE and 20% PERLITE should be added to it to assure that you have good draining soil. Do not use heavy soils when growing Plantain such as potting soil, or soil from a yard. Plant the Plantain rhizome upright and be sure the roots are well covered and the rhizome has about 1/2" of the base covered with soil.

We advise that you water and fertilize Plantain at the same time using any type of balanced fertilizer to help grow Plantain. Plantain are heavy feeders so we suggest that you fertilize very lightly each time that you water with the exception being that you do not fertilize if you are not seeing active growth.( Balanced fertilizer means - a fertilizer that has three numbers on the label ). After your initial watering we would not water again until your soil is dry to a 1/2" depth. ( Use your finger to test it ). Please do not expect this to be a plant that you "water once a week". If you water once a week it is unlikely that you will have success growing this rhizome

Plantain suckers THAT WE SHIP weigh 5 to 8 ounces, sometimes more. They are rooted and ready to plant. The pseudostem ( trunk ) is usually 6" - 8" long. Prior to packing the Plantain Rhizomes we cut off the leaves. This is a standard procedure. It would not be practical to attempt to box/bag the plant with leaves intact because they would arrive damaged badly after being in a box/bag for 4 to 8 days without light or any air and in the dry season the leaves would be "cooked". Once planted it takes only 4 to 10 days for a large new leaf to emerge

hayor2014: What's your take on plantain trees that have two bunches in the same tree, are they better than the one you plant as they are developed by IITA, what's your take on them generally

The dichotomy in the plantain can be thoughtof as an advanced stage in the evolution of the plant. The plant, we know, bears a single bunch on a single stem, and in dichotomy, a stage is now reached where more than one bunch are borne on one plant. The evolutionary stages of dichotomy is also very interesting, from a lower stage where only a portion of a single bunch divides
At the moment, the consistency of dichotomous habit from daughter suckers has not been fully established and there has been cases where the expected dichotomous forms have not been produced. This inconsistency is, however, very rare. Comparative tests with non-dichotomous.
Plantains to confirm superior yields of dichotomous plants have also not been concluded. However, since more number of bunches and hence hands and fingers can be obtained from dichotomous plantains, a tentative conclusion which can be drawn is that, it would be possible to plant dichotomous plantains on a larger scale to obtain higher yields per area unit.
