Ok then Pele.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by Priscila(f): 4:57pm On May 11, 2006
Pele.
I heard he scored 1260 goals in 1300 matches. Kudos to him
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by 4Play(m): 4:50pm On May 12, 2006
What abou Di-Stefano?He did not win the World Cup like Pele but his exploits at Real Madrid marked him out as just good as Pele.
Personally I think Maradona was better than Pele.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by spikelord(m): 11:22am On May 25, 2006
U left Zidane out!

Michel Platini nko?

Paulo Rossi nko?
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by hucarson(m): 11:40am On May 25, 2006
@ Spikelord,
Zidane,Platini and Paolo Rossi are not in the same league as Pele, Maradona and Luiz Ronaldo.

Maradona is arguably the best footballer to have ever played on Planet Earth.
He is not goverened by money like Zidane and Ronaldo who all played for big clubs after an impressive world cup performance.
Maradona prefered a lowly rated Napoli and dragged em from the Serie B to Serie A and even won the European cup and the Scuddetto for the same club plus the super cup.
Can u Picture Zidane playing for Sunderland or Watford FC?
Had Maradona played for Milan or Real Madrid his impact would have been more felt at club level than what we knw.

Pele's 1000 plus goals cannot be reckoned with because they played more games in a season and it was at a time football wasn't so organised.
Football has changed a great deal now especially with tactical defence system which strikers now find hard to beat.
There was no diving and ridiculous offside calls so goals were scored freely and easily.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by spikelord(m): 11:51am On May 25, 2006
He wasn't reffering to Luiz Ronaldo, but Ronaldo De Lima. Or am I wrong by thinking they are different?
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by hucarson(m): 12:32pm On May 25, 2006
Luiz Ronaldo = Ronaldo de Lima.

Are u really a football fan or a Ja Rule fan?
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by spikelord(m): 1:08pm On May 25, 2006
I only know him to be Ronaldo De Lima.

not heard the name Luiz before!
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by hucarson(m): 1:36pm On May 25, 2006
Then i take it u don't know him well enough then.
Brazilians are known to have some long and boring names though.
Pele's name wld have taken 2 shirts if he had used his real name on his football shirt. grin grin
Nascimento blah blah and blah.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by teeroy(m): 2:04pm On May 26, 2006
I won't comment on this list until ZINEDINE ZIDANE'S name is attached to it.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by dayokanu(m): 3:52pm On May 26, 2006
A great footballer is one that can rise to the big final game e.g Zinedine Zidane( vs Leverkusen,Vs Brazil 1998) Ronaldo vs Germany, Gerraed vs AC milan, vs West Ham But Thierry Henry (vs Brazil 1998,vs Italy Euro 2000,vs Galatasaray UEFA final 2000, Vs Liverpool 2001 FA cup final,vs Barcelona 2006 UCL final) is not a great player He Threw away the Trophy once AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!! The greatest footballer to me Are 1 Maradona, Ronaldinho,Pele,Cruyff, Zidane,Beckenbauer,Ronaldo in that order Thiery Henry did not make top 20
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by spikelord(m): 1:48am On Jun 01, 2006
Hey, he was close to becoming the world Footballer of the year twice!
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by superstan(m): 7:03pm On Sep 26, 2008
diego maradona is the best player that has ever kicked the round leather object.

brazil would have won the 1970 world cup without pele.

argentina wouldn't have won the 1986 world cup without diego.

i have never seen any player dominate a world cup tournament likr maradona did in 1986.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by Ibime(m): 8:00pm On Sep 26, 2008
El Diego is the king but no one can steal my heart like Ronaldo did from 1996 - 1998. At the right club and with the right level of fitness sustained over a longer period, I think Ronaldo would join the holy trinity with Pele and Maradona.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by dayokanu(m): 9:47pm On Sep 26, 2008
I would pick Diego second for me would be Zidane followed by pele, Cryuff, Beckenbauer, Ronaldo and Dinho
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by superstan(m): 10:18pm On Sep 26, 2008
zinedine zidane?

ronaldo de lima comes after maradona and pele.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by dayokanu(m): 10:39pm On Sep 26, 2008
Per achievement , Skill and everything Zidane nicks it for me.

3 player of the year award. In his time Brought France to the world cup and Euro cup glory.

Easily the best player of his generation. AFter Zidane, france has gone back to where they belong doldrums.

Its easier for a brazilian to the the world cup than for anyone else.

Did any trophy elude Zidane? I don't think so.

AT their swansong 2006, Zidane outshone Ronaldo, At their prime France 1998, Be the judge.

They are close, but I still favor the bald one.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by superstan(m): 11:33pm On Sep 26, 2008
@ dayokanu,

ronaldo de lima was better.

he became the best player in the world at 20 and repeated the feat at 21(no fluke).

there's no centre forward like him. he is so fast. sir bobby robson used to throw fits from the technical area watching his boy rip spanish defences into

shreds.

how many games did zidane play in france 98? remember he got a red card thus missing 2

ronaldo de lima was the best player in the competition and he could have won it for brazil but his strange illness moments before the final.

copa america 97 & 99, anyone?? shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked

he is the best!
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by dayokanu(m): 1:43am On Sep 27, 2008
World cup 1998, Euro 2000, Japan Korea 2002 Zidane was missing due to injury and Ronaldo stole the show. 2006 Zidane came back and stole it.

Remember all France vs Brazil games Zidane stole it.

Remember Zidane's goal against Leverkusen at The UCL finals Zidane reserves the best for Finals France 98, UCL 2002

even that Cheeky clip against Italy in the 2006 world cup finals

Zidane retired momentarily and France couldnt beat Faroe Island, Israel and Ireland and they were about to crash out of the qualifiers

Zidane came back and they coasted to the world cup. and he was the best player at the world cup Maybe if not for Materazzi's antics He might have lifted the

world cup again.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by A40(m): 3:48am On Sep 27, 2008
Yeah i agree Zidane was a maestro and unlike a talented Brazillian squad which with or without Ronaldo could still have functioned France is not quite the same with Zidane even though Ronaldo was something else they are equals if you ask me
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by Ibime(m): 6:57am On Sep 27, 2008
Nah, I disagree. Zidane is a maestro but if Ronaldo had maintained the same level of fitness he had from 1996 - 1998, we wouldn't even be having this debate.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by dayokanu(m): 7:23am On Sep 27, 2008
@Ibime,

If Ronaldinho had maintained 2004 -2006 we wouldnt also be having this argument

dayokanu:

ronaldinho, kaka, zidane, figo are miles behind ronaldo de lima's surge when he came into the limelight.

i am yet to see a striker as deadly as ronaldo between 1996-1999.

he is the last player to score more than 30 la liga goals in spain.

el fenomeno(there can never be another)

this is why i think the standard of world footballer of the year has gone down.

if kaka can win it, then i expect adebayor or ribery to win it anytime soon. angry angry

You cant bring their scoring records into this. cos of those you mentioned, only Ronaldo happens to be a striker and he normally should score more.

Midfielders are the real artiste of the game creating moves, dribbles and passes

Dinho was the only player to receive a standing ovation from the Bernabeu fans for his display there.

Ronaldo's best goal was probably against Campostela while Dinho did it time and again against top team Madrid at Bernabeu, Milan 2005 groups stage at Nou Camp, Makossa dance at Stamford Bridge

Dinho effectively brought Barca from footballing wilderness into prominence.

AS good as el fenomeno was he never won the UCL,

he won the league only when he played alongside Zidane and he wasnt even the most important squad player then.

Zidane equalled Fenomeno in National team footballing achievement and even surpassed him cos He took a mediocre France to world limelight.

WHile Ronaldo was the member of a Brazilian team who were always expected to win trophies.

ZIdane gave France character same can not be said of Ronaldo and Brazil.

Check all France vs Brazil games and tell me who dominated Zidane or Ronaldo both in their peak (1998) and in their twilight(2006)

I am even having a rethink, After Zidane comes Dinho then Ronaldo.

Skills Ronaldo or Dinho (I pick Dinho) remember the guy who revolutionised snake bite
Pace Maybe Ronaldo but I am not sure
Dead Ball Free kick, Penalties I have never seen Ronaldo score a Free kick So DInho takes that by a wide margin
Stamina Dinho
Heading Ronaldo hardly scored with the Head

dayokanu:

Come on man. We all know that Ronaldo was sick in the 1998 final. Plus the match was played in France. On top of that, even the France players said that the Brazilians seemed mentally affected by Ronaldo's seizure. Zidane in his twilight (2006) was not much different physically from the Zidane of 1998. Ronaldo was much different, much slower and much fatter.

dayokanu:

ZIdane gave France character same can not be said of Ronaldo and Brazil.

The 8 goals he scored in 2002 na yawa? The man came back from 3 years straight of injury and scored 8 goals in WC which is unheard of - this despite carrying an extra 20kg of weight. Forget it!

dayokanu:

@Ibime,

If Ronaldinho had maintained 2004 -2006 we wouldnt also be having this argument

Ronaldo's injury was not his fault. Ronaldinho's lack of fitness is.

Plus none of their play was even close to Ronaldo in 1996 - 1998.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by superstan(m): 9:08pm On Sep 27, 2008
@ dayokanu,

i am not sure u watched ronaldo between 1996 and 1998.

ronaldinho's moment of brilliance comes in pockets, ronaldo de lima's brilliance showed throughout the games.

go and watch his video again in barcelona and inter milan.

after maradona and pele, ronaldo de lima has to be the 3rd greatest football player.
Re: Legends; The World Debat? by A40(m): 10:29pm On Sep 27, 2008
Strikers obviously grab more goals hence the qualities are obvious but in Zidane you have someone that can create something out of nothing i am not even going to be dragged in saying who is better because they are basically tied on almost everything except club success
