Is there a reason every single one of this movie (with the exception of the intelligently conducted Half of a Yellow Sun) was controversial merely because their was overt display of se.x or se.xual moves?

No! That's Nigeria for you. The reasoning is puerile, bland and uninteresting.

Nigerians and Holier than thou attitude!

We buy and see worst American movies. Most people here followed Spartacus to the very end. Hypocrisy, pretence, that's the order of the day in Nigeria. But who is deceiving who? undecided

We want our movie industry to rub shoulders with its counterpart, Hollywood, and yet pretentiously frown at some of the things that have made Hollywood stand out.

MAYOWAAK:
Lovers of Yoruba movies will remember a Mainframe Production titled 'Ti Oluwa ni'le'. In that movie, Kareem Adepoju (Baba Wande) had connived with some village chiefs and elders to sell a piece of land which was hitherto marked inhabitable and property of the gods. Baba Wande and his cohorts, out of greed, clandestinely sold said piece of land under the pretext and conviction that land belongs to God (ti Oluwa ni'le). Well, after a while, everyone who was involved in that transaction started dying one after the other. Baba Wande went in search of divination. He was told the deaths were a repercussion of that act and that he was next (he being the only survivor); the only thing that could save him was if the deceased was not buried. By the time Baba Wande left the diviner's, the corpse of his friend was at the cemetary for interment. Baba Wande rushed to the cemetary and from afar started shouting:

"E ogbodo sin 'ku yen ooo..." (You must not inter that corpse ooo"wink repeatedly. Of course, the disruption he caused meant he was able to get closer and held on to the casket still yelling "e ogbodo sin 'ku yi... A ni e ogbodo sin 'ku yi se!" (You mustn't inter this corpse... I mean it, you mustn't inter this corpse) to the bewilderment of mourners. Movie ended and was supposed to have a sequel. E never comot.

Reading about OBJ's yet-to-be-released book and Buruji Kashamu's frantic effort to get a court injunction to stop its launch, all I can hear is "iwe yen o gbodo jade ooo" (that book must not be released). Problem is, I don't know how he sounds so I hear "ani iwe yen o gbodo jade seee" in Baba Wande's voice.

Hmmmm

Nigeria, one day, one drama; one week, one blockburster. This should be very interesting.

I'm here yelling "iwe yen gbodo jade ooo... Eje ko jade seee!" (That book must come out ooo... You have to let it come out!)

Ti Oluwa n'ile had part 1,2 and 3. Mainframe's best work yet.

This kinda criticism is one among the many reasons nollywood ain't developing, Nigerians will watch spartacus and re-watch it like ten times, but will scream on home made vids that ain't got highly sexual scenes like them hollywood movies, acting is a profession, dont judge actresses and actors by what you see them do in movies, even if they had to act unclad, does not mean that they ain't responsible

All this BS about Hollywood and the comparisons being made... It doesn't make sense to me.

1. You cannot compare Hollywood and Nollywood (Not bashing Nollywood but making such comparisons is unfair to Nollywood. Nollywood is a new industry while hollywood is over 100 years old). Who decided to name it Nollywood? (Same goes for Bollywood).

2. Sex scenes is not a criteria by which the quality of a movie is measured. In Nollywood, crappy films are made and overtly sexual scenes are added and the actors and actresses mention Hollywood at the first instance of criticism. If you want to make great films that meet international standards, work on your storyline and acting not on creating controversy with silly sex scenes. I don't mind sex scenes (reality = sex sells) as long as the movie is good.

3. African cinema is (and should be) quite distinct from western/anglo-american cinema. It's common sense, Africa emerged out of a different reality and the films should reflect that. So, I don't understand the comparisons. Yes, the realities will overlap as globalisation becomes more intense but the difference is still there. Majority of the Nollywood movies we see today actually reflect that difference even though many are sh*t. I just wish the industry is quality oriented as opposed to volume oriented. Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, Angola and south Africa (to some extent) still showcase beautiful African cinema with quality today. Similar to African cinema of the 70s and 80s but updated.

Rant over...

I am however glad that we occasionally get to see very beautiful Nigerian movies even if it is one every 2 years.
