TOPIC: Serving A Void-Filling God

"Thursday, January 01, 2015"

*TEXT: GENESIS 1:1-2 *

*"Key Verse "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters" (Genesis 1:2)."*
To find out what the future held in store at the start of every year or at the beginning of a journey, ancient heathen sages would slaughter an animal and study the intricate make up of its skin and intestines.
A reading of the complex entrails, guided by esoteric parchments, offered a hint of the future.
What a blind, tortuous and hazardous plunge into the unknown! The Christian who is serving the Creator of heaven and earth does not have to engage in such pursuit of attempting to know a void in-between a beginning and an ending.
Rather, He should be rest assured in the custody of the Saviour who always faithfully fills up time and space. The genuine Christian puts his absolute faith in the unfailing promise of the Creator who says, "I am with you alway even unto the end of the world" (Matthew 28:20).
Believers, therefore, should move into the New Year with unswerving faith in the God of creation whose Spirit "moved upon the face of the waters" and displaced the formless void and darkness. The fear and anxiety that characterize these perilous times (2 Timothy 3:1) cannot be the portion of true Christians who are under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
God, however, expects us to live righteously; He expects us to fully consecrate and commit our lives to Him; He expects us to use our resources to serve Him to be able to enjoy His promised blessings.
In the course of this year, there is need for us to regularly evaluate our lives and work to ensure they are acceptable to Him. As God taps us into consciousness each day after a sweet sleep, we must appreciate Him for taking care of our yesterday, today and tomorrow (posterity) by preaching Jesus the Saviour to the lost world.
As we do, His Spirit will move to destroy the works of the devil, set people free from sin and bondage and fill every void in them for His glory.

TOPIC: True Love

Friday, January 02, 2015

*TEXT: JUDGES 11:29-40*

"*Key Verse: "ANd she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon" (Judges 11:36)*"
As we reflect on the story of Jephthah and his vow in our text, we cannot but notice the love and devotion of his only daughter to him. She was a child that shared in the dream and vision of her father and did everything to demonstrate this. No doubt, her heart must have gone with her father as he went out in the battle against the children of Ammon. And as the father returned in victory, she led her friends with joy and singing to welcome him without knowing the vow he had made with God. As the father expressed grief concerning this, she encouraged him to pay his vow even though that would bring so much pain and loss to her. Her love for her father made her to be willing to support him to pay his vow.
It is interesting to note that when she asked her father for two months to bemoan her virginity with her friends in a faraway place, she willingly returned after the period. She did not see that as an opportunity to run away. She was fully submissive, yielded and obedient to her father, even to the point of being willing to be used to pay her father's vow. What a love!
Do we have such love and commitment in our homes today? How many children are willing to be that submissive and obedient to their parents to the point of making painful sacrifices for them? How do we show our love for God and for one another in the family of God? Where there is true love, there will be obedience, encouragement and support one for another in the will of God. There will be the willingness to stand by one another in trying and difficult moments as we all forge ahead in our pilgrimage with commitment to God and His cause in the world.

TOPIC: Light Of The World

"Saturday, January 03, 2015"

*TEXT: JOHN 1:1-9*

*"Key Verse: "That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world" (John 1:9)."*
The importance of sunlight is obvious to everyone. It melts frozen items, reveals hidden objects and helps plants, on which the healthy maintenance of man's and animals lives critically depend, to produce their food and thrive. As great as the sunlight may be useful to the world, Jesus offers to the world a light that is incomparably greater in power and relevance to human life.
Our text opens with the deity of Jesus. He is the Eternal One who coexists with the Father. He is the Word, the Creator and the Light. As the Eternal One, He lives forever. As the Creator, He made all things. As the Light, He shines in darkness, and as the Word, He sustains the universe. Christ, the Light is so bright that all the darkness in the world put together cannot overcome Him. John was sent to bear witness of that "Light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world" (John 1:9). The Light the Jews have rejected is being offered to as many as desire to become children of God.
A world without Christ is a dark one. Darkness obscures the truth, breeds corruption and evil. God, in His love, does not want us to grope any longer nor stumble in the dark; hence Jesus, the Light of the world has been revealed. As the rays of sunlight melt the thickest of ice, so does the light of Christ melt the mountains of men's sins if allowed to shine in their hearts. While many reject the light, others are pleased with just a spark from a matchstick.
We all have a choice. Which do you prefer: To remain in the dark or come into the light of Christ? He is the One that "lighteth every man that cometh into the world." Come to the Light today.

TOPIC: The Heart's Treasure

"Sunday, January 04, 2015"

*TEXT: NEHEMIAH 1:1-3*

*"Key Verse: "That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem" (Nehemiah 1:2)."*
A man puts his heart on what he treasures most. He carries it in his heart, sleeps and wakes with it and goes about with it day and night.
Nehemiah's patriotism and fervent love for the holy land was undoubtedly deep in his heart. This virtue was more evident in his passion and quest for information concerning Jerusalem.
Even though he appeared to have lived all his life in exile, Nehemiah loved the holy city, Jerusalem, and was in waiting expectation of a return to the homeland to help remove the reproach of the broken down walls.
Nehemiah's comfortable position in Shushan, the palace, did not reduce his interest and commitment to Jerusalem. When he met the new arrivals from Jerusalem in the palace, Nehemiah's enquiry concerning the state of the inhabitants and of the city itself revealed a heart burdened for the people of God. He appeared to have no other burden outside his necessary daily duties but this.
No wonder the Lord sent those men his way to satisfy his heart that was longing and praying for the city. If we lay up in our hearts such intense yearning and desire for God and His word as Nehemiah did toward Jerusalem and its people, we would become recipients of His grace, holiness and great power in not too long a time.
We fail to receive definite inspirations and answers to prayers because we are filled more with earthly cares and not His word or His way. Bad dreams, evil thoughts, fear, defeats, etc.
Do not abide in a heart like that of Nehemiah. If our hearts will always look heavenward, our visions shall be of the Lord of glory, of service, of victory and great possibilities.
Therefore, "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above not on things on the earth."

TOPIC: Better Than Gold!

"Monday, January 05, 2015"

*TEXT: PROVERBS 8:9-14*

*"Key Verse: "For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it" (Proverbs 8:11)."*
If men would prioritize on seeking true wisdom than they search for money and worldly possession, our world would be the better for it. The discovery of Solomon, the wisest man in the Old Testament who spent all his life amassing wealth and earthly possessions that all amount to vanity presents a great lesson from the text.
"Wisdom is better than rubies " he declared. Wisdom, instruction and knowledge of God are to be preferred above silver and gold. Wisdom gives strength and discretion that makes the possessor act right. It saves from self conceit, pride, arrogance and delusion. Wisdom delivers and preserves one from evil and equips the possessor with creative abilities for better living. While wealth does not make one wise, wisdom brings greater riches. This is why it is preferable. The source of wisdom matters.
Wisdom that manifests in sinful attitude to outwit others or destroy them is devilish and undesirable. Life-enriching wisdom flows from only one source, Jesus Christ, who is Wisdom personified. To have this wisdom, one has to be willing to empty oneself of self conceit, deception and perversion. There must be the willingness to turn away from all worldly wisdom which focuses only on self. In humility, you must accept your folly, admit your nothingness and be willing to be made rich by Christ. This simply requires true repentance and simple faith in the Lord Jesus.
Besides, you need to continue to abide in Christ and take the Bible as your most valued asset on earth. The more you read it, the wiser you become. You also need to constantly draw from the deep knowledge and wisdom of God's appointed ministers in corporate fellowship and Bible study so as to continue to grow.
If men in the world make a lot of sacrifices in search of perishable riches, we need to do more to get divine wisdom which is far better than gold!

TOPIC: Make It Simple

"Tuesday, January 06, 2015"

*TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 2:1-5*

*"Key Verse: "And I, brethren, when Icame to you, came notwith excellency of speechor of wisdom, declaringunto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:1,2)."*
Many times, we wonder why we make much efforts in evangelism with little or no result. The reason is that like the marketers, we spend so much time trying to impress sinners with our knowledge of Scriptures instead of giving them the simple message of Christ's love and offer of salvation.
At other times, it is our motive in evangelism that is wrong. Instead of preaching the simple gospel truth of the necessity of the new birth for everyone, we try to win an argument on the superiority of our religion or denomination over those of others.
It is even more repulsive to see that self projection, gain and glory appears to be driving force of many so-called gospel campaigns. A look at their advertisements and publicity will show that they, not Christ, are at the centre of attraction. When they give out invitations, it is not to come to Christ but to come to them. It is not any wonder then that though it appears that more gospel works are going on all over the places, there is little or no impact.
If we are to succeed in our soul-winning efforts, we must follow the example of Paul the apostle revealed in our text. His intention for preaching is very clear: to have men saved. His goal was to make the declaration of the gospel message very simple for people to understand. He never tried to use the enticing words of men's wisdom or impress by preaching what the people would love to hear.
He preached the truth of the necessity of salvation through repentance and faith in Christ's death. When nothing but Christ is plainly preached, genuine and heaven minded converts will be won.

*TEXT: DANIEL 8:1-12*

*"Key verse: "I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great" (Daniel 8:4)."*
Christ Jesus hath the power, the power to destroy, the power to bruise your enemy, who would your soul annoy, Christ Jesus hath the power, when on your dying bed to give your soul the victory, the power to raise the dead".
These lines are from a song that is meant to reassure believers in Christ of the unconquerable power of Christ Jesus. In life, there are many problems that appear insurmountable.
All through the ages, men have arisen to be a terror to their fellow men. They roll out oppressive policies that draw tears from the eyes of fellow citizens. They operate as if they have the power of life and death because nobody can stop them.
King Pharaoh of Egypt in Moses time was in this mould. He oppressed the Jews so cruelly that it appeared there would never be any respite. Day and night, the people of God were told to make bricks without straws being provided for them. They toiled and groaned while the enemy pushed furiously. But that display of brute power and sheer wickedness terminated at the Red Sea. Israel got their freedom, while Pharaoh and his men perished.
In today's text, Daniel saw some visions of rams, one of them exercising formidable power, "pushing westward and northward and southward" so that no beast might stand before him. But a hegoat demystified the ram. The he-goat cast the ram down to the ground and stamped upon him, and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand (verse 7).
Believers must put their faith in the Almighty who alone has the ultimate power to throw down all the seeming formidable power of the enemy. Our Lord and Saviour Jesus has the power to destroy every strongman or evil personality no matter the forces behind him. Trust Him always, no matter how grave the challenges you face may be.

*"Key Verse: "And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so" (Genesis 1:15
)"*
What will the earth look like without the sun that sustains its ecology? Scientists have not relented in their efforts at unravelling the mysteries behind the sun, though they have difficulties appreciating the spiritual significance of Christ as the Light of the world.
A clear understanding of the gospel truth which portrays the Lord as the Sun of righteousness to those who are groping in spiritual darkness and ignorance will make the truth about creation clearer.
In the believer's life, light figures as a distinguishing factor between the old life of indulgence and darkness and a new life that is full of the marvellous light of Christ (Ephesians 2:1-3
). Just as the sun is an unrivalled fountain of light upon mankind, so is our Lord Jesus Christ the principal Source of spiritual light in the world (John 8:12
). Motions made without Christ will result in groping and stumbling in the dark. The prominence and permanence of the sun exemplifies Christ's continual and outstanding domination of our lives through His righteousness that constantly radiates in us.
It is time to expose your life to increased rays and powerful impact of Christ's righteousness. For, He is the brightness of the Father's glory (Hebrews 1:3
). Also, allow your light to illuminate someone else today. Do good to them, the greatest of which is to expose them to the gospel light.
Arise and shine! Do not try to separate from Christ who is the Light of the world. Such a decision will lead to living in darkness of sin and imprisonment by the devil. Your spiritual light will continue to glow as long as you abide in Jesus.
It is as you remain sincerely attached to Him that you will be able to illuminate the darkened world around you and bring glory to Christ.

TOPIC: When God Fights For You

"Friday, January 09, 2015"

*TEXT: JOSHUA 10:1-11*

*"Key Verse: “And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah” (Joshua 10:10)."*
There is so much truth in the saying that “if God is all you have, then you have got all you need.” This is because if we allow God have full control of our lives, He will manifest His power in everyarea of our needs.
Israel, on their way to the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua, encountered many hostile nations. But they prevailed against all. News of their incredible victories made kings to panic. Indeed, Gibeon, a great city of mighty men, found it expedient to submit to the superior power of Israel even under tough terms. Adonizedec king of Jerusalem feared Israel and was incensed with Gibeon for submitting and signing a pact with them. Panic-stricken, he arranged a confederacy with four neighbouring kings against Gibeon. Gibeon handed the battle to Israel who routed the confederacy of five Amorite kingdoms.
Notice how the event was captured in verse 10: “And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.”
This string of victories did not come to Israel by dint of hard work or military might; God fought for them. As long as Israel was in good standing with Him, the Lord of hosts remained their Banner.
God still fights for His people. For those who through repentance and faith in Christ have submitted their lives to God, He is the Source of their victory. When God fights for you, no confederacy of demons or men can withstand you.

TOPIC: The Privilege Of Sonship

"Saturday. January 10, 2015"

*TEXT: JOHN 1:10-14*

*"Key Verse: “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12)."*
Princes and princesses of this world walk tall because of their royal birth. They are regarded as principal citizens and enjoy exclusive privileges just for being born by a king. But how more glorious it is to be born into the family of the King of kings and Lord of lords. “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: ther efore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.” glorious it is to be born into the family of the King of kings and Lord of lords. “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we shoul embarassedd be called the sons of God: ther efore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.”
The same blindness that prevented the world of Jesus’ time from knowing that the Creator incarnated and was in their midst is happening to a greater part of the world today. The text uniquelyand pungently revealed the identity of Christ as the Word that has been with God from the beginning and through whom all things were made. As Light of a world that had been darkened by sin, He came to seek and to save the lost mankind. The great John the Baptis came to herald His coming. Yet, with all the signs and wonders Christ Himself wrought, many people still “knew him not”. He came into the world among the Jews and they failed to acknowledge Him as the long-awaited Messiah – “his own received him not”. But God’s salvation plan is far higher than their expectation. “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”
To receive Christ implies personally taking Him as your Saviour. Believing His name means accepting the purpose of it - the offer of salvation through it (Matthew 1:21). Access to God through prayers is by the name of Jesus. This is how to obtain the power of sonship of God with innumerable blessings here and hereafter. Much more than princes, we have been made “kings and priests”.

*TEXT: PROVERBS 9:11-18*

*"Key Verse: “If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it” (Proverbs 9:12)."*
It is the punishment placed on offenders of our laws that helps to abate, to a great extent, the spateof crime and civil disorder in the society. The unregenerate, sinful man deceives himself by believingthat obeying God’s word or respecting civil government is doing favour to God or society. He counts it a loss to himself not to indulge in fleshly sin. He takes sin as sport, thinking he can have the pleasure of sin and avoid the consequences or shift them altogether to some other person.
In our text, we see that vices and virtues neither corrupt God nor change Him. Man is the ultimate sufferer of the outcome of his sin. In fact, the consequences of sin or righteous behaviour may truly affect fellow men, but the greater effects of them are reaped by the doer. Living out the Word for others to see may bring about changes in the lives of others. In the final analysis however, the benefit of godliness is more to the doer.
In the same vein, if we continue to live in sin, we behave unwisely. Sickness and premature death will be the outcome of such a lifestyle while righteousness and holy living will prolong the lives of children of God. In the end, the righteous will be able to stand before the Son of God in heaven.
Sin is enticing and its effects are very dangerous. One sin leads to another until the sinner becomes inextricably entwined. Consider the consequences of sin today and deliver your soul like a deer escaping the hunter’s hound. It is wise to confess your sin and surrender your life to Jesus now. He will have mercy and save you.

Ordinarily, wisdom is defined as the ability to assess issues and situations correctly, following the best course of action on the basis of sound knowledge and understanding. This is clearly different from the wisdom of the world, which seeks to measure all forms of wisdom merely on the basis of human knowledge, understanding and rationality.
The biblical concept of wisdom is quite different from the standard view which seeks to subject itsunderstanding of wisdom to philosophical and rational thought in explaining the deep mysteries of human existence. This has been described variously in the Scriptures as the wisdom of this world, human wisdom, the wisdom of men, the wisdom of this age and man’s wisdom.
In our text, Paul the apostle, in proffering answers to the questions of the Corinthian church, made it abundantly clear that there is a world of difference between biblical wisdom and the wisdom of the world. The first principle of biblical wisdom is that people should humble themselves before God in total obedience and reverential worship; and accept the message of the Cross as real and final.
Non-Christians do not see the gospel as the power of God unto salvation. One’s decision to follow the Lord seems to them foolish and silly. No one can comprehend God but believers are given the spirit to understand God’s plans. The world still clings to the wisdom of this age which eliminates God from the realm of man. The wisdom of God is a mystery. He has chosen both base and foolish things to confound the worldly wise. As you read this, the only true option open to you is to stop rationalizing the message of salvation, accept Christ and follow Him all the way. This is the only true type of wisdom that humanity needs today.

*"Key Verse: “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (1 Corinthians 2:7,8 )."*
DANIEL 8:13-27

Key Verse: “And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king’s business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it” (Daniel 8:27).

A story was told of a young man who told his friend “I don’t read the Book of Revelation in the Bible”. When asked to explain why, he said: “I don’t just go there; it contains fearful things about
what will happen after now. I don’t just want to think about it.” Selective exposure to God’s word is a mistake many people still make today.

Daniel saw certain revelations that disturbed him, and rather than go his way saying, ‘what will be, will be’, he demanded for an interpretation of what he had seen. He said: “I Daniel fainted…” There are some pieces of information which could ordinarily agitate the mind and make one faint. But what we do after we had “fainted” matters a lot. Some people have, out of fear, given their lives to Christ. But a vast majority have hardened their hearts, waiting for doom’s day. No matter how we try to shy away from God’s word or try to change its meaning, it remains the same. Rather than try to cover or change the truth, let us direct our efforts into praying for grace to obey its precepts. No one can alter the plans of the Almighty.

Whenever we hear the word of God, we must be ready to obey. Those who try to avoid hearing God’s warning by avoiding places where the gospel is preached or by making the Bible their enemy will eventually discover that they have done themselves more harm than good. Daily, the word of God warns on the impending doom for those who spurn the invitation to accept the Lord as their personal Saviour. Today, you must arise unto righteousness and sin not.

TEXT: GENESIS 1:20-23

Key Verse: “And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth” (Genesis 1:22).

Several times in the creation story, the Scripture says of each stage of divine accomplishment that: “And God saw that it was good.” A summary is given in Genesis 1:31 where the Bible declares: “And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good”. Previously, the comment had been “good”; now after the creation of man in His image on the sixth day, he reviews His work and says it was “very good”.

God’s purpose for us His creatures here on earth is to reflect His incomparable glory, share His joy and life and worship Him in appreciation of His love. We are not to worship things created as the heathen do in deifying the sun, moon, waters, trees, the seas and animals. Nor are we to allow them guide our lives as astrology teaches.

When God says in Genesis 1:14, that the sun and the moon be for “signs”, He did not mean they are to serve as our spiritual or physical compass. He simply intended that the planets and stars should serve as signs that point to Him as well as mark the days, seasons and years. The believer should be wary of false astrological theorists who twist these divine purposes.

When the Bible says, “God blessed them” in verse 22, it means He delighted in His creatures and bestowed blessings on them. Christians following the footsteps of Jesus, the Son of God, should also delight in nature and its beauty as God did. Each day we wake up, we are expected to bless God for His awesome skills and wisdom in giving us life, which would culminate in eternal life in His Kingdom as a result of Jesus’ redemptive work at Calvary.

As believers, we should not contribute to the destruction of nature through sin, immorality and corrupt practices but pray to God to free nature from the deadly grip of sinful men and ecological degradation. When we pray thus, we shall be fulfilling God’s desire that will bring glory to His name.

TOPIC: Humility Is It

TEXT: JOHN 1:15-28

Key Verse: “He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose” (John 1:27).

The way up is down. This is the paradox of life. Humility in the life of a man usually ushers in manifold blessings. On the other hand, pride incurs God’s punishment as the Scripture rightly states, “...for God resisteth the proud and giveth grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:5).

John the Baptist, whose major ministry was to introduce Jesus Christ, bore witness to Christ with humility. Although born before Christ in the flesh, he still realized that Christ existed in eternity before his birth. So, he declared that Christ was the Lamb of God that came to take away the sins of the world. John’s personal testimony about Christ alarmed his audience. They thought he was Elijah or Christ. He declined but affirmed he was only a forerunner of Christ.

Like John, let us exalt Christ than self. And having experienced Christ’s fullness, we should humbly and relentlessly point sinners to Him as Saviour. Let us also consecrate our lives to Christ and ask Him to give us grace to remain humble. A life of daily crucifixion and yieldedness to Christ will keep us in unbroken communion and oneness with Him.

Christ wants to be exalted and glorified in your life every day. This can only happen after cleansing from outward and inbred sins. Pray and believe God for a change of heart and transformation of life. The wonderful work of grace can only be done in the life of people who humble themselves to submit to the convicting and transforming power of the Holy Spirit. It takes a greater measure of humility to continue in the Christian race, contend with the rigour of the spiritual life and eventually receive the
crown of righteousness.

Humility was the hallmark of the Saviour’s life and ministry while on earth. If we are to make a success of life and ministry, we must be as humble as He was.

"*Key Verse: “And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel” (Joshua 10:42).*"
Martin Luther was the catalyst of the reformation movement when Christians were brought back to trust God for their salvation. He was also an accomplished musician who taught the people a Christian song titled, “A mighty Fortress is our God.” This song, for centuries, has continued to move Christians to trust God and to accomplish great things no matter how difficult their challenges might be.
Joshua was commanded by God to destroy the enemy nations because of their evil and adulterous ways. Joshua who was a military leader captured their kings and utterly exterminated the inhabitants of the land. He continued his victorious campaign, conquering and destroying all nations that were marked for destruction.
God’s purpose for conquering and destroying these wicked nations must not be misunderstood. He was cleansing the land of evil and pollution, so that the Israelites whom He planned to become a channel of righteousness to the rest of the world, could settle there without any contamination. The wicked nations deserved what they got because they deviated from the righteousness of God and His holy precepts.
Like Joshua of old, when the Spirit of God is bringing conviction upon our hearts to mortify every work of the flesh, we must cooperate with Him. When God orders us to eliminate sin and all evil practices sinners engage in, we must not consider any other option. We must obey Him unreservedly. Strict obedience to God’s admonitions and precepts makes us to escape His judgment.

TEXT: NEHEMIAH 2:4-8

Key Verse: “Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah” (Nehemiah 2:7).

Everything we need for abundant kingdom life and blissful eternity with God has been provided in His holy word. This leaves us with no excuse of spiritual poverty or want of the fullness of divine blessings.

In our text, Nehemiah, for the good of his fatherland, asked king Artaxerxes for permission to build the walls of Jerusalem. No sooner had this primary request been granted than he presented a number of others that were supposed to make the first approval worthwhile. His bold and courageous faith was honoured as he had all his requests granted by the king.

God does not answer any thoughtless prayer. If we ask anything according to His promise and will, He will answer with speed. We are in danger of playing into the hands of our enemy the devil, if, when we lack solution to our needs and problems in life, we feel our requests to God need to be moderately presented. God never reprimands us for the frequency or great volumes of our requests as men would do. He rather chides us for our unbelief. God wants us to ask, but in faith. He gives us according to His riches. We will not enjoy much of His blessings if we do not ask at all. Yet, the best of His blessings are reserved for those who exercise faith in His omnipotence.

It is one of our privileges as Christians that we do not only go to God for what we daily need, but whenever a particular emergency or difficulty arises in the lives of others or neighbourhood, we may bring it before His throne, and we have the assurance that He will hear us. Therefore, if you want to receive and keep on receiving, then pray, pray and pray. God will answer in the fulness of time.

*TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 3:1-4*

**"Key Verse: “For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?” (1 Corinthians 3:3)."**

When the head of government ofa country who was visiting another nation was told of a crisis back home, he cut short his trip and returned to address the domestic challenge. It would have been cruel and heartless of him to have continued the journey while his country was engulfed with unrest. A good and caring leader or shepherd in the household of God would behave the same way.
Our text today identifies Paul the apostle as a concerned guardian. About to close his three-year ministry in Ephesus during his third missionary journey, he was told about the divisive tendencies creeping into the Church at Corinth (1 Corinthians 1:10-13). It was a disheartening news for Paul who had spent one and a half years with the Corinthian Church teaching the brethren the pure and undiluted word of God (Acts 18:11). Now, he heard that these Corinthian Christians were poised to adapt to the low standards around them. Some of them had already compromised by breaking into factions engaging in incest, resorting to lawsuits to settle disputes between them, abusing spiritual gifts and manifesting unholy conduct at home, in the Church and in the public.
Although Paul could not stop his work in Ephesus to visit Corinth, he quickly dispatched a grave letter to the brethren to draw them back to the uncorrupted teaching of Christ. He warns that what they have been accused of are acts of carnality that should not be seen among genuine Christians. As a true shepherd, Paul told them the truth that liberates. He delivered to them “all the counsel of God” (Acts 20:27).
Fighting the good fight of faith, defending Christ’s doctrine of outward and inward holiness as qualification for entry into heaven is the responsibility of all believers. Wherever we are, God enjoins us to “contend for the faith once delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). It is our primary and sacred duty.

TEXT: PROVERBS 12:17-28

Key Verse: “Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad” (Proverbs 12:25).

There are increasing number of problems in the world today. With the collapse of many economies, jobs are failing fast, businesses are collapsing and homes are crumbling. Our newsstands are daily filled with stories of gloom – terrorists’ attacks, kidnappings, outbreaks of strange diseases with no known medical cure, uprisings, natural disasters and daily forecast and predictions of future woes. Coupled with these are the innumerable personal and family problems that many face. All these seem to live one with no desire to want to continue to live, hence the increasing rate of suicides and attempted suicides everywhere.

The sad reactions to these are the antagonisms, bitterness, brutality and violence being experienced everywhere. To survive, many have devised false methods. Nobody seems to be telling the truth. Many live on false identities and lying has become the new form of diplomacy. But these do not seem to be solving the problems as lies, falsehoods and deceits result in disappointments and heartbreaks bringing about more bitterness and hatred. This is a very vicious cycle!

Our text today provides for us the way out – speaking the truth! Honest words are very potent. Truth heals and cures all forms of ailments. As Christians, it is our responsibility and calling to always speak the truth. However, as we speak the truth it must be with love. If the truth is spoken with the wrong intention, it could be more damaging. This is why the Bible admonishes us to speak the truth with love. There is already so much trouble in the world. We must not add to it. Rather, we should seek ways of relieving the world of the pains it is groaning under. Let’s spread some cheers. Seek out people who are hurting and burdened, and speak some words of hope and cheer to them. In Christ, the hopeless finds hope. Speak of Christ to them.

TEXT: DANIEL 9:1-3

Key Verse: “And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes” (Daniel 9:3).

God had continued to show Daniel what would transpire towards the close of the age. In the first year of Darius, king over the Chaldeans, Daniel’s eyes were opened to understand that the prophecy of Prophet Jeremiah that the children of Israel would spend 70 years in captivity in Babylon before returning to Jerusalem was almost completely fulfilled. That gave him a serious concern so much that he decided to seek the face of God in prayer and supplications with fasting, sackcloth and ashes.

The Christian’s journey is a constant warfare. There is no rest for a Christian soldier. Daniel was always burdened by the plight of Israel and never ceased to pray and fast for their well-being. He led a life of supplication on their behalf, always standing in the gap for God to have mercy.

In our days, our countries have been sold to sin and the devil. A lot of unbelievable things take place under our very eyes, yet we remain unmoved! Some believers rationalise the clear signs of the end as just part of changes in society. Do we pray for our countries, leaders and fellow citizens of our nations? Do we supplicate for fellow believers who are daily undergoing persecutions across the world? Do we pray for the souls of people who have given themselves up to be used of the devil to do all manner of evil things in society? Except God’s people pray, the society will continue to decay and workers of iniquity will continue to gain the upper hand.

Daniel’s life is a challenge to every genuine child of God to be concerned about events around them. Daniel was following events and relating such events to what the Scripture says. We must be alive to happenings around us and be able to relate them to the Scripture. It is by so doing that we shall be conscious of heaven.

*"Key Verse: “This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me” (John 1:30)."*
A flourishes and attracts the vibrant Christian fellowship presence of God where there is no envy and acrimony, where everyone accepts his or her call to serve others and where the pursuit of God’s glory is the cardinal objective.
In today’s text, John the Baptist did not harbour envy for Jesus Christ. He told everybody that he was not the Christ but His forerunner. And when he saw Jesus coming to him, he lavished Him with sincere compliments, praise and good introduction: “Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world…”.
The church will be a better place if brethren realise the need to work in harmony, recognising the gifts of others and giving those who are appointed to lead the chance and cooperation to do so without antagonism and envy. The Lord will also work among His people in greater measure if and when the spirit of unity is given a free reign in our midst. It requires everybody’s effort to promote a blemish-free fellowship in the household of faith.
The spirit of the world must not be imported into the church. It is in the world that people kill and malign one another because of power. That should not be the lifestyle of those who are called by the name of the Lord. Parochial dictates such as envy and jealousy are off-limits for true Christian assemblies. Holiness and righteousness with sincerity of purpose must be the bedrock of all Christian gatherings. God commands His blessings upon rancour-free congregations only.

Key Verse: “And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:25).

Frankenstein’s monster, the science fiction whose creator found himself helpless to save himself and the environment from the deeds of what he formed, is an abysmally poor imitation of the beings created by Jehovah God. He is a far cry from man, the one created in the image of God.

The Almighty exercises absolute control over man and any works of His hands. Although God said to man: “Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and upon the earth,” He still reserves to Himself the ultimate powers of arbitration and control.

Contrary to the blasphemous teaching of evolution, God created man and the universe. He is watching over His handiwork though Satan tried to destroy it by causing the fall of man in Eden. God has set aside a time for the restoration of the dignity of man. He is doing it through the provision of the last Adam, Jesus Christ. Redeemed, believers are now empowered to reject the deceit of the devil.

Jesus and His saints will soon reign to put an end to ages of depravity and destruction wreaked on the world by Satan and his demonic followers. Redeemed man will recover lost ground: “And God shall wipe all tears from their eyes: and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away” (Revelation 21:4).

*"Key Verse: “As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses” (Joshua 11:15 )."*
Joshua had been a very faithful and loyal servant of Moses. No doubt, he must have carefully observed the life of Moses especially with the way Moses obeyed and carried out the instructions of God. He knew that the secret of his success was in his careful obedience to God and must also have learnt from the incidence that prevented Moses from getting to the land of Canaan. As he took over the mantle of leadership from Moses and was handed the manual for his operations and the blueprint for his success – “this Book of the Law” - Joshua was careful enough to follow every detail without fail. No wonder he had such a very successful campaign and had no record of rebellion or stubbornness among his followers.
The passage for today’s reading outlines the summary of his conquest. As he obeyed the Lord, he found the initial promise he was given that “Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have given unto you…” and “There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life…” (Joshua 1:3,5 ) to be very true. As he marched out in battle with faith and courage, kings and kingdoms collapsed before him until he had fully taken possession of the land. He followed the divine blueprint and obtained the promised good success (Joshua 1:cool.
If we wish to be as prosperous and successful as Joshua, we must also obey all that the Lord commanded us. In ministry, marriage or career, true and lasting success will always come through courage and obedience to the Word. Compromise, unfaithfulness, disobedience and the desire to be like other people are some of the reasons so many have failed today. If we mark the path of successful men and follow the trail they have left, there is no doubt that we too will be successful. So,let’s stick to the blueprint.

*"Key Verse: “So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow” (2 Corinthians 2:7)."*
The penitentiary, that is, the prison, is meant to correct the ills of society. Statistics reveal that instead of rehabilitating offenders, jail terms in prisons tend to harden the majority of criminals. They come out of prisons worse than they went in because of their belief that the society hated them for even sending them to jail.
In the Corinthian church, indiscipline became commonplace to the point of destroying the very spiritual fabric of the church. Apostle Paul, as the supervising shepherd of the church, provided a remedy by the excommunication of a member who was found guilty of fornication.
Although this particular member repented of his sin, he was left in the cold. Apostle Paul had to write this second epistle that superceded his earlier instruction to lift the discipline of the errant but penitent member. He reasoned that an endless discipline instead of correcting an ill, could harden the errant disciple in his sins.
Church discipline is necessary and essential to the spiritual health of the church. But an endless and erratic discipline without grace could harden the disciplined. In our homes, parents should discipline their erring children with appropriate punishment that is commensurate with the offence. Besides, the guilty must be punished to enable him lead a better life and not necessarily to snuff life out of him altogether.
As we maintain an uncompromising stance in keeping God’s law with regards to discipline in the family, church and society, let’s do so from God’s clear perspective - the ability to temper justice with mercy.

TEXT: NEHEMIAH 2:9-11

Key Verse: “When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel” (Nehemiah 2:10).

The gray heron (a bird that lives around water) has a very singular mode of defense. When attacked by the eagle or falcon, it simply stands quiet and firm. Using its sharp pointed beak as a sword, it simply allows the predator to pierce itself through by its own force. Christians have the Sword of the Spirit which is the word of God. When attacked by the enemy, we stand firm, display the Sword of the Spirit and we overcome.

Nehemiah was not on a personal errand or vainglorious adventure; he was commissioned by God and the king to rebuild the broken walls of Jerusalem. But, there were people with selfish interests who would prefer the wall to be left as it was. To achieve this, they would orchestrate all forms of obstacles to hinder the project, or better still, stop it from being embarked upon. Such were Sanballat, the Horonite; Tobiah, the Ammonite; and Geshem, the Arabian. They would be supported by Jewish accomplices, who also for selfish interests, would prefer the wall to remain in ruins.

The paradox of the Christian race is played out here. We are called out of the darkness of the world, purged and purified with the blood of Jesus Christ, and commissioned to rebuild the “broken walls” of people who are still under the dominion of Satan. This assignment marks us out for persecution by Satan and his agents. They will design all forms of attacks to dissuade and intimidate us from carrying out our God-ordained assignment.

But, thank God, we are more than conquerors through Christ who loved us. There is need for us to put on the whole armour of God to withstand all the wiles and strategies of Satan and his cohorts against our lives. This way, we will, like Nehemiah, successfully complete the assignment God has given us to do. Many souls will be saved, Christ will be glorified and we will be rewarded by the Lord.

TEXT: PROVERBS 13:1-17

Key Verse: “He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction” (Proverbs 13:3).

It is not uncommon to find people blame the misfortunes that happen to them on one enemy or the other. There are others who also believe that their lot in life, whether it is good or bad, is just what has been destined for them by God. They do not want to accept that what befalls them is largely a result of what their tongue has brought on them from their confessions. Those who understand the connection between what they say and what they have are careful with the way they use their tongue.

Today, many people practise positive confession because of the power it possesses. It is what they hope for and expect to see that they confess with their mouths and it is working for them. If you desire a healthy life, a happy family, godly children, prosperous business and career, confess them. People who are pessimistic about life and often confess negative things will also get negative results.

It must be noted however that no amount of positive confessions will bring about positive results if it is not based on truth, honesty and goodwill. To engage in dubious acts and hope that your positive confessions will work for you is self-delusion. If you also speak ill of your neighbor and expect positive things in your life, you are mistaken! Lying, mischief, flattering, backbiting and sowing seeds of discord among brethren cannot produce positive things in life.

For your tongue to be wholesome and be a tree of life bringing healthy fruits, your heart must be transformed. Obviously, it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. You cannot expect to speak good words and lead a good life if your heart is evil and corrupt. You will need a change of heart which the Lord only can give when you become born again.

TOPIC: Incredible Unity Of Scripture

"Wednesday, January 28, 2015"

*TEXT: MATTHEW 1:1-7*

*"Key Verse: “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham” (Matthew 1:1)."*
It has continued to baffle secular scholars that the divinely inspired Holy Bible with 66 books and over 40 writers in different far-flung ages and places spanning centuries and several kilometers between them have seen reprints many times over without a doctrinal revision warranted by errors or new findings about its claims.
There cannot be such a shortcoming because the Bible comes from the One Who says in Isaiah 34:16 “Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them”.
So, we find in the opening verses of the gospel of Matthew a sweeping survey of several generations from the time of Abraham, the patriarch to the time of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a mighty genealogical tree that mentions illustrious men and women of faith: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Ruth, Jesse, Solomon, Josiah, Hezekiah, Joseph, Mary etc. The list is long.
Although it was an impressible family tree, it is more inspiring to discover that each stage of the growth of the tree was building up to the revelation of the Messiah, our Lord Jesus Christ. All the components of the tree played their parts faithfully and in absolute obedience to the path directed by God. God who planted it caused it to grow to maturity and fruition as Matthew showed it.
The importance of reliable record-keeping is here underscored. It is also further proof of the stunning unity and veracity of Scripture. Old Testament Bible characters got a mention in the New Testament as evidence that they are linked by the common denominator, faith, just as we who believe in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour are part of the Lord’s family tree. “So then, they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham” (Galatians 3:9).

TOPIC: Bowels Of Mercy In Prayers

Thursday, January 29, 2015

TEXT: DANIEL 9:4-10

Key Verse: “And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments” (Daniel 9:4).

Prayer is the means and activity by which men align themselves with God’s purpose. It does not consist in battering the walls of heaven for personal benefits. Rather, it is committing ourselves to carrying out His purposes. It is not bending God’s will but in bowing to His will to be done. If Christians spend as much time praying as they do grumbling, they would soon have nothing to grumble about.

God had promised the children of Israel that whenever they were taken captive into a strange land, if they would repent of their sins, He would remember them because of His covenant with Abraham. Daniel, on this account, took his countrymen’s place by confessing their sins. He acted as their representative and intercessory priest. Thus, he typifies the Messiah, the Sin-bearer and great Intercessor. If we fulfill our part of the bargain, God will not fail to fulfill His. He will be faithful to His people as He is to His word. He keeps covenant and not one iota of His promise shall fall to the ground.

Daniel pleaded for God’s mercy and sued for the performance of His promise, knowing that their captivity was occasioned by sin. He took it upon himself to seek the face of God on behalf of his people so God could forgive their sins and end their calamities and captivity. To this sincere heartfelt prayer, God answered by sending an angel to disclose His mind to Daniel.

During prayer, we need to focus on God’s greatness, goodness, majesty and mercy. Sin and Satan are ruining people’s lives. There seems to be no hope for peace and progress. The church also is not spared the crisis as she daily suffers opposition from persecutor and false prophets. This is the right time for true believers in Christ to arise like Daniel and intercede in prayer for God’s mercy upon our world.

TOPIC: The Blessedness Of The Scriptures

Friday, January 30, 2015

TEXT: PSALM 1:1-6

Key Verse: “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” (Psalm 1:3).

One of the famous founding fathersof the United States of America, President Thomas Jefferson deeply enjoyed the companionship of the Scriptures such that he did something novel: after reading the comforting text of the four gospels, he extracted only the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and made them into a book he titled: The life and words of Jesus of Nazareth. Later, it came to be known as the Jefferson Bible.

Historical research reveals that Jefferson in his first White House term never savoured a more blessed time than when he dreamed about writing the volume. Such meditation upon the word of God guided him to achieve the fame attributed to him in US history. It helped in the part Jefferson played in the formulation of the Declaration of Independence, in which he gave the Creator exclusive reverence as the Giver of life, liberty and happiness.

This fact indeed authenticates what the psalmist says in today’s text: if a man’s delight is in the law of the Lord, meditating day and night in it (verse 2), “he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of waters, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” (verse 3). Can we find such blessedness and prosperity in the philosophy and doctrine of man? No. Instead, what the latter has given are a toxic mix of deadly pleasure and eventual perdition in eternity.

But Jesus, the Son of God, can deliver those who reach out to Him in humble penitence. His words will soothe them and heal the pain inflicted on them by the false teaching of the enemy. A restoration to the path of prosperity will then follow and usher in the joy and peace of salvation which “passeth
all understanding”.

Then would be fulfilled Jesus’ promise in Matthew 11:28: “Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest”.
