Hello everyone here, compliments of the season! i guess the break has given us little time to spend with family members...
Okay to the point:

CAR DETAILS

CAR MAKE/MODEL: BMW 320i
ENGINE: DOHC, 6 Cyl
YEAR: 1993

i currently have a few issues with it, just fell short of stock standard:
My engine, having run for a while, when the ignition is turned off, it does hesitate to shut down.
i have black fumes (lightly) out of the exhaust pipe (running rich) and the idling has dropped a little (say, from its supposed 750 to a little above 500, estimate 600).
The car also breathes sometimes (and other times goes off from critically breathing).

THINGS I HAVE DONE:
1. i have tested the MAF, replaced it with other MAFs but same problem.
2. Changed the ECU, no improvement
3. Cleaned injectors, same story.
4. Oil changed etc but no general improvement...

i don't know whether its a clogged PCV or something else...I appreciate your invaluable suggested solution to these issues, thanks a bunch.

Boss, Merry Christmas!

I just need to get something clear - when you say this:

yungboss:

Do you mean the engine runs-on when you try switching it off, when the engine's hot?

shocked at the non presence of my Oxygen sensor, how the hell was it not there? There's this panel beater who welded the exhaust...could he have removed it?
Re: Bmw 320i Little Issues by Meristem: 1:23pm On Dec 26, 2012
Disconnected oxygen sensor is a good suspect. Welders often believe such fittings should not get in their way and remove them. They belive the sensors arent important!

you'r right bro. I confronted the dude in question, he laughed sarcastically, and told me that the 'that thing no dey do anything for there' i felt like an idiot, cos recalled i paid him...but not to damage my car! After much altercation, he started pleading.
But could that be the prob, i got about looking for the O2 sensor but couldn't find it.
Does it come with the exhaust? on inspection, the hole where the sensor should fit in has been altered with acetylene flame...

Typical Naija mechanics for you. Ignorant vehicle destroyers. Tell him to cough out the sensor, because I suspect a replacement won't be cheap.

Your downstream oxygen sensor will not cause the symptoms you described.

been thinking about that too...cant really pin down what the real issue is, like i said it dropped my rev needle from an assumed 750 to almost 500. With dark fumes coming off the exhaust...please what could be the possible cause?
@findout, it'l surely be hard to find, i already sensed it
Re: Bmw 320i Little Issues by davioli(m): 5:56am On Dec 27, 2012
Bro replace that oxygen sensor, it could be one of the reasons your bmw is running rich. That oxygen sensor plays a vital role trust me. @least get that out of the way and focus on other parts if problem persists

i'd like to know too, the signs of a failing fuel pressure regulator...my idling widely fluctuates anytime i almost fill/fill my tank...

i dont drive a BMW but i had exact issue with my mazda d throttle body and its gasket was d culprit. it may be dirty or bad and the gasket may be broken.
i dont know if urs uses a throttle body cos my friend's mini cooper whch is a bmw family uses actuator wch i think is an advancement over the throttle body. i stand to be corrected.

took out the ICV of the car today, cleaned the opening with petrol, hoses attached to both sides of the ICV were cleaned thoroughly too with same solvent. Got new air filter and cleaned the plugs (NTK, they were no longer sand brown). No significant improvement, still noticed the little black fumes.
Made a call to take it in for a scan but i was scheduled for monday.

coja is a lovely car to drive and own,i am presently using one now,but the most important thing is that once u get it dont leave all the problems for ur mechanics to profer the solution alone, try and join bmw owners club like bimmer forum etc,u will find alot of solution to any problem u might be facing, that was from my personal experience,i drive one presently with no regret, although i had issues slighly in the past but now i think am very familiar with a lot of things with the car, secondly its not a car u give to all bmw mechanics as it comes with aluminium cylinder, performance is great but avoid overheating for the car, generally u can never regret buying that car,i stand to be challenge by anybody who think otherwise

i think d choice of manual or automatic tranny is dependant on you, do you want to drive d car or you want d car to do d driving. what i'm sayin is dat its ur personal prefrence dat will dtermine that.
it can go for as low as 1.2m to as high as 1.6 depending on how clean, options and year of manufacture.

just like other brands of cars, there are few things that determines the price of bmw in the market
1. if it is fabrics or leather seat
2,manual trans is cheaper than authomatic trans
3,neatness
4. if all gadjets are in good workimg condition e.g the air con
5.if the engine size is 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder
for 4 cylinder coja comes with n42 and n46 engine type which could either be 316i or 318i
but for six cylinder it comes as 325i or 330i
i dont understand what u mean by fairly use,do u mean tokunbo used or nigerian fairly used.
have u been driving before?if yes then prefderence for manual or authomatic will be urs,but manual for coja is like wanting to drive eternity without any gear issues.

Re: Bmw 320i Little Issues by Nobody: 4:55pm On Jan 01, 2013
Boss, sorry for my late response.

The 6 cylinder BMW motors run a plastic intake manifold. I would be checking for vacuum leaks, where it joins the cylinder head. I would also look at all vacuum hoses, and the throttle body-to-intake.

The best way is to use brake cleaner in a spray can. With the engine idling and not hot, spray aroud each intake manifold runner-to-head join, throttle body-to-intake seam, and around the vacuum hoses. You're looking for an increase in engine rpm, which would suggest the engine is drawing in the aerosol through a leaking area.

You say you've cleaned the injectors - how did you do this?? Because there's no way to thoroughly clean injectors as a DIY job. They have to be cleaned ultrasonically. The injectors have electronically-operated needle valves. When shut, there should be no fuel coming through, regardless of rail pressure. If the injectors are tired, fuel will dribble out, despite the needle valves being closed. Also, damaged pintle caps can cause poor spray patterns, which will cause rich running, and a lumpy idle. Make sure the injector O-rings are in good shape. If they're split, you'll get secondary leakage, causing rich running too.

If your engine's breathing more than normal, you'll need to check your PCV system. Make sure it's not clogged, and none of the pipework is split. I would also replace the downstream O2 sensor.

Have you looked at your throttle body? The throttle plate must be able to sit in the rest (closed) position without any difficulty. Make sure there are no carbon deposits between the bore, and the plate. And make sure the spindle operates smoothly, and can return to the closed position under the spring tension. If you need to force it to shut completely, you'll neet to strip it down, and rebuild it, or get a decent replacement.

thanx a bunch siena, i'l be looking into these issues gradually...i 'l keep you all posted about my progress in this, and when it's resolved.
Re: Bmw 320i Little Issues by yungboss(m): 7:50pm On Jan 07, 2013
i think the issue i have with my car is related to the missing Oxygen Sensor, i'm taking out the full exhaust (from the manifold to the tail) and replacing it with a used but very neat one having the sensor, for N35,000. I'm going to be testing it tomorrow to ascertain its status. I have been running on 16 mpg, city, which is a drastic deviation from previous 22...for a 2.0L inline 6...

finally guys! i was so pleased with my latest discovery tonight! This issue that has caused me sleepless nights over the months have been discovered.
I got home from work, and was about to sleep...as i lay down, i began thinking about my car and its little issues.
The problem of dark fumes started when i performed remedial work on the exhaust, sometime in September. But i felt it was the MAF, so i thought that i'll fix it up later, it wasnt so much to trigger worries. I first attempted changing the MAF, after trying about 4 or 5 units without any significant difference, i resolved that my MAF wasn't the cause...i turned my probe to the ECU, i got a new one, replaced it, no change. Cleaned my spark plugs, replaced them with new ones, my injectors were still spraying, i employed the service of a Mechanic to do the job...ICV was thought thereafter to be the culprit, it was a little bit difficult to disconnect because of the way the vacuum lines are snugly fitted, it was cleaned thoroughly with a brush and Carb cleaner...not a single improvement in the result.
At this point it became something i started to consider a serious prob. I didnt want to go the way of scanning yet....
I give this issue serious attention mentally,everyday...vacuum leak? I suspected but how do i go about this? Anytime i fill up my fuel tank, i experience serious surging/hunting 100 to 1500, car runs and sounds rough during that time
Re: Bmw 320i Little Issues by yungboss(m): 5:43am On Jan 10, 2013
sorry guys, i slept off...lol. In summary my CARBON CANISTER had been the problem, i think it's expired...while examining it, i took out the vacuum lines connected to it, disengaging them from the Canister outlet and to my utter amazement the sound of the car changed, went to the tail pipe to observe for dark fumes, i didn't see none! It ran so smoothly that you couldn't tell whether it was idling, with no foul emissions, no hesitation, no idling issues, no hiccups and little backfires, it was a complete restoration...prior to now, it went through 5 BMW shops with none able to solve the problem, lol. So i'm going to order for a new FUEL VAPOUR CARBON CANISTER today, and reinstall in the car. For now it is disconnected to enable me run the car smoothly until when i fix it...
this was about the last gape over a staggering attempt at solving this problem myself..

The first thing you should have done was to scan that vehicle instead of engaging in all your trial and error

Adrenaline: The first thing you should have done was to scan that vehicle instead of engaging in all your trial and error
You are right, i had my reasons for not taking it...When i first bought the car then, i took it for a scan and what was read out to me was not convincing,in a supposed reliable shop, alot of uncertainties like "maybe you should also check your..." or "it is possible your car..." and i do not really like situations like that. I paid N20,000 on two occassions unrewardingly (in 2010), so i resolved not to pay to get my car scanned anymore, but been too occupied with other things to get one for myself...i decided to take the pains to do "trial and error"... smiley

I'm sure you would agree with me that "trial and error" has been more expensive on the long run, think about the 5 trips to the shop, all the man hours wasted, all the emotional disappoint you must have gone through. . . Besides why are you paying so much for a scan, all I did was make friends with my mech and I just tip him some change whenever he scans my cars. At worst you could get an OBD 2 scanner yourself for that 20k you paid for 2 scans
Re: Bmw 320i Little Issues by yungboss(m): 8:49am On Jan 12, 2013
i'l get the scanner no doubt asap, good BMW mechanics aren't common here in port harcourt (maybe none to my knowledge), that was partly why i moved from shop to shop, not wanting to keep the car in a place to make an experimental environment...
