If Abraham never married the Egyptians then boko haram and isis will never exist. Sarah was a fellow Israelite.

Inter-tribal marriage is not endorsed by God. I don't even want to start with Samson and Delilah. Solomon and how his foreign wife's turned him away from God to idols.

Stop being so melodramatic. In this day and age, a lot of people from other tribes are Christians who have given their lives to Christ, and have been washed by His blood through faith in His name. undecided

Does the fact that they are not Igbos mean they are still 'idol worshipers?' shocked

Didn't Joseph the son of Isaac, marry an Egyptian? So please stop using Samson as an excuse. Even in the lineage of our Lord Jesus, Ruth his great grandmother was a Moabitess, and not an Israelite. Rahab the former harlot who helped the Israelites gain entry into the city of Jericho ended up being one of the ancestors of Jesus. She came from which tribe?

God did not endorse marriage with 'idol worshipers', but He was not against other tribes. Was He not the one who created those other tribes or were they created by the devil?

This one Nigeria shit is getting into our brain from the back door.
It's all a ruse.

My culture can not vanish, my traditions must live till eternity.

I can't be speaking English in my home and to my in-laws.

If am gone, my kids must know dia root, they must not vanish in thin air.
@op, u and ur friends no see urobo people go date?

Am in warri, when u say a hi to an urhobo chick, she hears ur accent, next question she ask is, re u igbo? The zoom she goes to dat a barber or a valgnizier. And the end of the day she's not married after all.

If igbo guy date dem for 3 months, dey cry foul.
Wen dia people will keep dem in his hut for 10 year as gf without even knowing dia parents, dem go hide dia sins and bring igbo people own all out.

The point is - there's no norm in igboland as regards ethnic preferences in choosing a spouse unlike it obtains in other places.
Various Igbos in the thread have given examples of their relatives who married from other tribes and nationalities, that gives credibility to my assertion that we're the least likely to marry someone of the same tribe when compared to the other two major tribes.

If you check the rates and statistics of Nigerians in inter-racial marriages, you'll find out that majority of them are Igbos.

More and more Igbos will continue to marry people of other tribes.
Majority of Igbos don't stay in the east, they only come rarely during festive seasons. This means many igbo children will continue to be born and bred outside the south east, which means the possibility of them (these children) getting married to a fellow Igbo is very slim. Also remember that Igbos are not too protective of their culture and traditions like the yoruba's and hausas.
You rarely see an igbo person born and bred outside igboland speaking Igbo or even wanting to identify with their being Igbo. I've seen many Igbo people say they can't or won't marry an Igbo person (mostly females) for reasons best known to them but you'll rarely see a yoruba/hausa person say he/she can't marry a yoruba/hausa.

Due to these trends peculiar to the igbos, (migration, cultural independence and education) many igbos won't end up marrying a fellow igbo in the nearest future. Igbo to Igbo marriages will reduce drastically.

Anybody who doesn't acknowledge this is lying to himself

You said "there's no norm in igboland as regards ethnic preferences in choosing a spouse unlike it obtains in other places. " I beg to disagree. sad

Just as you have a few Igbo people citing examples of inter-ethnic marriages within their family, you also have several Igbo folks that have stated they would not marry outside their tribe. And they have given reasons to substantiate this, even within this thread. e.g. from certain expectations given their position as the first son, to so-called 'biblical' reasons etc. In many cases, you would find the latter set of people who prefer not to marry from other ethnic groups, are more than the former.

Unless you have not resided in the South-east for a long time, then you would be familiar with folks especially from towns like Nnewi etc., who make it clear that they prefer to marry within their enclave as a norm.

Judges 14:3 ►

New International Version
His father and mother replied, "Isn't there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?" But Samson said to his father, "Get her for me. She's the right one for me."

Numbers 36:3 ►

New Living Translation
But if they marry men from another tribe, their grants of land will go with them to the tribe into which they marry. In this way, the total area of our tribal land will be reduced.

Genesis 24:38
"My master made me swear, saying, 'You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live; 38but you shall go to my father's house and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son.'

Genesis 28:2
1So Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and charged him, and said to him, "You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. 2"Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother's father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban your mother's brother. 3"May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.…

The bible says marry from your tribe for maximum peace.I am not against inter-tribal marriage but against those making it compulsory. That is suspicious.

Yes we are superior breeds can you go and kill yourself now. For your information Anambra is the most developed state east of the niger. You can take that to the CBN.

Have you seen somebody that is not from Royal family that ruled England?

We are a special breeds we do not mingle with inferior breeds like you people. It is not by force that you must marry our girls because you are not even human enough to do that In that we do not give out our daughters to inferior people.

Anambra has the best and brightest minds in Nigeria right the time of the great Zik, Ikemba, Achebe etc..

But I get his point.
@bigfrancis21 nice point, but here's my view.
Others do it doesn't make I right.
Additionally, Nigeria is made up of major 3 regions. North west and east. The people in the North inter marry freely, fulani, gwarri, benue, hausa, Tiv etc....people in the west intermarry freely too, yoruba, egun, badagry, etc. But because tribes in the EAST are much, igbo's don't like marrying others and its justified because it favours them better.

I for example wouldn't want any of family member to marry an igbo man or woman, I'd rather marry a yoruba or even a fulani. This is because I have not had a good experience as regards the igbos I've encountered in life.
All in all, igbos!!..marry yourselves, its good for you bcause other tribes will hardly understand your behavior and character.

Why claim to be Igbo when you are not?
Why not be real.

Take this from an Igbo girl - If a man wants truly wants to marry a woman, her ethnic group would not stop him. No/ or few Igbo parents would disown their children because of their partner's ethnicity. The very worst that could happen is animosity for some time or boundaries would be established.

Ethnicity only presents a good excuse for a person to not marry someone they never intended to marry or were not completely sure about marrying.

Having said that, I see nothing wrong with wanting to marry someone of your ethnic group or from neighbouring groups.
Igbos from Imo have married people from Rivers groups mainly, Abia Igbos have married from Ibibio groups, Ebonyi Igbos from Efik groups, Delta Igbos from Edoid groups, Enugu Igbos with people from Benue groups, since the beginning.
If Anambra Igbos choose to keep to themselves, let them be.

The first comment you quoted came from Samson's parents, and not from the Lord God. There are other instances of Israelites who married women from other tribes and yet their hearts were not turned away from God. e.g. Joseph who married an Egyptian, Moses who married a Midianite, Boaz who married Ruth a Moabitess etc.

Solomon's case was a rather strange one, as his folly lay in marrying multiple wives rather because he could not be content with one.

I asked you a question earlier which you have coveniently ignored: " In this day and age, a lot of people from other tribes are Christians who have given their lives to Christ, and have been washed by His blood through faith in His name. undecided

Igbo bashing has become quite a common thing in Nigeria such that it has become normal to bash Igbo on every single thing, even on things that are meaningless.

You created this thread to ask why Igbo prefer to marry from their tribe. Are you really serious? This is a question you opened this thread for looking for 'answers'? Would you have opened this very thread in the first place had a Yoruba or Hausa guy been the one who preferred to marry from their tribe? Yes or No? Why would a Yoruba parent reject a non-yoruba suitor, and that will not be an issue. In fact, such action is justified. A Hausa parent will do the same and no dust will be raised about it. But when an Igbo parent does the same, then its a big deal. It is a serious issue that calls for serious attention and criticism, then you begin to get tags like ''Igbos are 'tribalistic'', 'they are 'selfish'', it is an 'Igbo problem' e.t.c. Minor issues that aren't issues when done by other tribes become a serious issue when Igbo is involved.

I look around me, majority Ibibios marry within the Ibibio tribe, majority Hausas marry within Hausa, Yoruba within Yoruba, why should the Igbo marrying within themselves even be a question in the first place? Despite the level of inter marriage between whites and blacks here in the US, majority whites marry within whites, chinese within chinese, blacks within blacks, and you're going to sit there and tell me that it is a problem when Igbos prefer to marry Igbos?? Like seriously??

I get your point about love being the most important factor between 2 people from different tribes and there are marriages between Igbo men and non-Igbo women however majority Igbos don't need to look outside for love when they can find it within themselves. The same love you mentioned as important, Igbo men get it from within the tribe. Why look outside? What about culture preservation and values? Why should Igbo preferring to marry from within even be an issue in the first place when other tribes are doing the same? Is the creation of this thread even justified in the first place?

Tomorrow you're going to open another thread asking 'Why do Igbo people speak Igbo?' Like seriously??

If 60 percent of Igbos marry from their tribe and the remaining 40 percent marry from other tribes, I wouldn't call that a norm.
I don't know if you've read the comments of Igbos of this thread but majority of them have refuted the OP's claim by stating that they have various relations married to non-igbos.

Nnewi is just a negligible excuse for your claims, the population of Nnewi people are not more than 1 percent of the total Igbo population. There are bigger Igbo sub-groups that are very open to inter-tribal marriages like the Mbaise and Ngwa people. Hence, the idea of using Nnewi as a reference point makes no sense.

U dnt say?
Nice study sha.
Lemme tell u something, no igbo kid born outside his region of both igbo parent dnt understand igbo. No matter how much English is been spoke to him or her, tell him any thing with the deepest igbo, u'd be surprised ur study would be edited.

Secondly, for that reason which make every man no matter how wealthy sends downs his ward down east for studies, dia they learn everything necessary and would never go back to wia ever the same.
I had a lot of dem wen we got into university, dey never wished to go back to lagos.
I was born in the north, I schooled in awka and do u know how much I have forgotten hausa and how sharp am in my culture now? Both in speech and otherwise.

People from igbo nmarry from other tribes I know, even Ebonyi but for Anambra and Enugu? We dnt play with our culture.
As for the ladies who dnt wish to get married from home, reason is cos our men re so choosy and dem girls are in the wrong end of it cos of age.

Everyone needs a right partner.
