I worked in IITA, Ibadan, and a Short Term Staff, which they still practised to date. It was a mess of a place. They wouldn't mind giving you a one-day contract to work yourself off.

All in all, everything that you do is always seen as not being enough. I went to work daily, 7 days a week, would be booked at the gate if I'm late to work but will never be paid for overtime of weekends.

Everything suffered and I endured it. Just mentioning the name IITA, many people would think you are paid in dollars, but it's not real. There are two types of workers: NRS and IRS. If you are an IRS then you would be paid in dollars. Those IRS are in two variants, Nigerians and others. Nigerians would pay tax while the others, even if you're from Ghana would never pay tax.

For the NRS, there are daily casual staff and the Short Term Staff that I fell under.

IRS- Internationally Recruited Staff
NRS- Nationally Recruited Staff

IITA was a hell of sort for me don't know about others o.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and esp for mentioning the name and explaining in details. Who would have thought IITA can do that? The almighty research institute that supposedly pays everyone in dollars? I wish you all the very best in your career path.

To others contributing, please don't hesitate to mention the name of the company. U may be helping odas from falling victims by doing so.

I joined a major pension firm in Nigeria as a contract staff, a company that if u mentioned its name , all ur friends will just scream ,baba o! (like too much money, u knw what i mean)

I worked my head off, did my supervisor’s(full time employees) job without stress and i never complained to them, but trust me i was complaining to God. I kept my attitude intact, never felt inferior , and never allowed no one talk to me as trash.infact if u talked me down, i would use a much more calmer tone and give u my piece of mind calmly(u sef go know say na condition make crayfish bend) .I got several promotions that would earn me like additional 5k or 8k or 10k(but really what would that amount do for a grown person in 2013)

The worst part is that as long as i was a contract staff, it was affecting my opportunities of getting employed in a good firm, maybe because they usually felt that the pay they are offering is way bigger than what i was earning. I learnt everything i could learn, enjoyed every thing i could enjoy while at it and continued to pray to God.
I was been paid 52k and fast forward, 4 yrs later, went for an interview with another firm after like 9 months i was called to resume.
I am not there yet,but am glad i dropped the red tag called outsource/contract or whatever tushness it is called. In my opinion, its a trap to any Good employees career.
If you are in this shoe right now, please pray well and look well and learn all you can so that when u have the opportunity, you can shine.
may God bless u for this piece. I was also caught up in this for over 6yrs as a contract with a bank. I learnt, did my BM work while he takes the glory with othe r core staff.at times thy see u as if you also have a contract brain.talk to you like a shit. But today i praise God am nw a full core staff of another bank tht even pay better than the latter

cryso sad how people treat people. I believe God will reward our hard work someday. I won't ever give up. Even with Bsc, planning for an MSC, yet your certificate is not valued. 35k after 31 days? Even university boys and girls spend much more talk less a graduate. I won't give up, we won't give up. We'll make it.

SOL (Strategic Outsourcing Limited), hhehehehehe. I saw hell with dat company btw 2009 - 2013. As a contract marketer my target was same as dat of a full staff. Wasn't entitled to the bank's pool car, my fellow SOL colleagues used to fly bikes or keke napep to go make calls, earnings 18K monthly plus 30 or 80, even 8k depending on d numbers of accounts u opened dat month. I became I corporate begger, begging ppl to open account, using my money at times for initial deposit for customers so dat I'll meet my weekly target. My female colleagues (some, not all) had bleep to get account. Remember days they'll pack us inside pool car n empty us in market to market d tomatoes, pepper, crayfish n meat sales, wasn't easy. Yet my neighbors bck home go dey hail me every morning n dey tax me @ d slightest opportunity. D expensive suites I bought faded cos was always under s sun marketing. Then @ d end of June 2013 I trew in d towel, stopped d job, stayed 3mths, then as a French graduate I decided to take a part time-teaching job in a private school earning 50k monthly, worked on Monday, wed n Friday. Then @ d end of Oct another school came calling wit d same 50. I changed my time table, d principal of d 1st school was one of my customers bk in banking days, so he understood n freed me half days on wed. By November was earning 100k teaching french. D mother of one of d students introduced me to a group of 7corpers who wanted to learn french, taxed them 10k each per quarter, do d math(I pay 3k monthly to d school I use as venue to tutor d 7copers on Monday, Tuesday n Thursdays from 4-6PM& more corpers batch C R interestd). Now I hv a catholic reverent father who is willing to pay 20k monthly to tutor him on Tuesday, Thursday n sat, at least 1 hour daily on d choosen days. When I remember I wasted 38mths doing corporate beggar for back e dey pain me, but God knows better. So op, jst dey mark ur time, when u see opportunity 4 a better job, move on. Now me am looking for a business minded person wey go help me promote my registered tutoring business, I dream to open a school, but I still dey eye foreign affairs n embassy job o. Merci beaucoup mon ami, Dieu est avec vous, bonne nuit.

Am currently a contract staff in an old generation bank, 60% of d staff are contract the useless uba that started it has started absorbing some of their contract staff but mine sidelines us and employ fresh graduates mostly the children of the bosses n strong share holders. I have given my best to this organization as an Industrial attache, corper n worker but unfortunately they still dint count us worthy to be looked at. Even the job is now boring. In the cause of work there is no hazard allowance, relocation allowance salary is just survival. Just the privilege of been an IT staff having to travel round branches were u get paltry taxifares dat u can barely cook a pot of soup from also the staff are so envious at any little achievement u make. I just pray God hears us n do something on our behalf d experience isn't funny I say. We lack labor laws, n government. In this country..

I was a contract staff for 2 yrs in alpha beta consulting LLP and I will tell u it is a very bad situation to be in. We will do the same amount of work as other staff but we were not entitled to their bonuses. We were being repeatedly told by the HR that we will soon be made permanent. At the end of every 3months,the normal staff will receive x6 of their basic salary and we will get nothing, even when we did the same amount of work and sometimes even more. Finally a new management came in and sacked all of us with just one month pay.
The best thing to do when you are in this situation is to always be on the look out for better opportunities AND never feel too comfortable in that position because it is very temporary.

So, when your company requires an extra hand on a project for about 6 months, what would you do? Hire a full time staff and fire the poor fellow after 6 months?

Let's face it, contracting has its own place in the business world.

Labour Casualization cut across all industries in Nigeria, in fact we have Organizations that 65% of their employees are Contract staff. What baffles me is that there is no law protecting dis category of workers, not even a line in our weak Labour Law. Too bad.

Tell us your experience as a contract staff.

Honestly, is very terrible and Am indeed very saddened by this development which is gradually becoming a norm in our present day society.
I work in a commercial bank( Zenith Bank precisely). I have been with them for over seven (7) year and till date my salary has never been increased for a kobo.
I have remained stagnant as a bulk teller ( Note Counter) without a promotion, let alone conversation.
I don't enjoy any medicals, security or other benefits being enjoyed by the bank's professional staffs.
And my offence.........
Am a Polytechnic graduate......
The management of Zenith Bank has blatantly refused to listen to us- the contract staffs.
No matter the number of years spent on the job, our interests have never been a priority to them.
Most contract staffs of zenith Bank PLC , especially we the bulk tellers, have spent more than eighteen (18) years on the job with no promotion or conversation.
Today, even most of us with higher qualification are never considered for anything and the reason being that, "we are a product of a Polytechnic".
After several years of begging for due consideration, our Management only advised us to resign and leave the bank if we feel aggrieved and cheated.
Sadly, even though most of us are graduates, we earn same thing or ( pay of N47000) a security and a driver earn.
In Zenith Bank, Bulk Tellers(Note Counters) are employed with OND, while drivers and security men are employed with Waec or O' level results but yet, we earn same pay.
This is very sad and does not tell well of Zenith Bank PLC.
Am very much aware that most banks are relaxing their policies on contract staffing to reflect on modern day realities but it seems Zenith Bank is hell bent on her inhuman policies and modern day slavery practices.

I currently work as a permanent outsourced staff for a telecomm (coy) name withheld, the pay is okay, u get bonus e.t.c but the full staffs get more even though we do the same thing.
but right now i have another job offer @a bank but its also contract but with all the info i have read here, i think i would stick to telecomms contract than bank contract.

The most important thing is to do well and learn on the job, take all the experience you have learnt to get a better offer.

U are who U make Urself to be.
U could be a contract staff today, be diligent in your job, and U would rise.
.
Anyhow U choose to see it, the experience has helped a lot of people get better jobs, and be better at setting themselves up.
People like to sit and complain, accepting the tag 'contract staff'!
But in the same organizatn, U find 'contract staff' who work diligently and go the extra mile. When opportunities present themselves, these people are the first to be considered, while others sit around lamenting their position as 'contract staff'.
.
If U hate the job, leave.
If U stay, do Ur best.
If U feel like lamenting, fine!
Truth is, U are what U make Urself to be, contract staff or no contract staff.

Stories like this is what made me ask my wife to stay at home until after bearing children. What I see contract staffs suffer in my company is just too much, but their pay is somehow okay, like 80-100k a month.

People always say "why your wife dey house?" and my reply is akways "I'm not complaining".

One thing that could be concluded from here is that one eneds an experience, someone was complaining about iita, never heared or knew about this company before so i took my time and search it out on gogole and i checked their career page and one thing i came to agree with is that experience matters..most of their vacancies requires experience so lets assume Mr A has a bachelors in Business administration as well as a masters in Business administration and he is a fresh graduate but mr B has a bachelors in agriculural science and he has had 2 or more years experience, then there is an opening for an agricultural pathology bla bla blah at say IITA and it clearly states that they need someone with at least ba in agric science as wella s with 2 years experience, now who do u think should be hired as a full time worker? in as much as Mr A has acquired more education than Mr B but the fact is still that Mr B is more qualified for the position.

I will advice everyone to work and gather the experience needed cos experience is soemthing that is basically needed most times for employment not only in naija ooo and to the intending admission seekers, don't just go for any course all in the name of i wanna be a graduate...

God help us all
